NASA Shuttle Disposition

California Science Center in Los Angeles for the Endeavour
Kennedy Space Center for the Atlantis
Smithsonian (Udvar-Hazy) in Washington, DC for the Discovery
Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City for the Enterprise.

Like I said, we got something!
NASA also announced that hundreds of shuttle artifacts have been allocated to museums and education institutions.

  • Various shuttle simulators for the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum of McMinnville, Ore., and Texas A&M's Aerospace Engineering Department
  • Full fuselage trainer for the Museum of Flight in Seattle
  • Nose cap assembly and crew compartment trainer for the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio
  • Flight deck pilot and commander seats for NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston
  • Orbital maneuvering system engines for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center of Huntsville, Ala., National Air and Space Museum in Washington, and Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum

Well, three of those place ok for me. But still 'booo...'

Sweet. Nearly all of those work for me. The Intrepid is a 30 min subway ride to my house, DC is just a few hours away, and I usually hit up Florida every couple of years :D

I have absolutely no opinion on any of those sites -but I think it would be a grand idea to have one of them go on a world tour and be displayed to billions rather than millions...

Intrepid is talking about putting Enterprise where their Concorde is now. So....where is their Concorde going?

Even though NYC is getting one, I'm kind of bummed that Houston is not. If a shuttle should be anywhere it is Houston.

A shame Seattle couldn't get one. Hopefully I'll be able to see the shuttle coming to LA before I (potentially) leave here at the end of my Master's Program next year.

I was hoping Wright-Patt could have managed to get one of the shuttles. Still, all in all, at least they got something. Now I need to make a trip up there to see all the stuff that's been done since 1997.

Isn't that just a barge next to the Intrepid? I thought one of the stipulations was that the shuttles had to be housed indoors?

I was thinking about this last night.

If you put a shuttle in Houston, the only people who will really be able to see it are Houstonians.

However, when you put it in New York it's within driving Philadelphia well over 20,000,000 people and is in the middle of one of the largest urban conglomerations on the planet. LA is within driving distance of another 15 million people in with San Diego being not too far away.

Houston? Not so much. Dallas is over 4 hours away. Austin and San Antonio is 3. Houston itself has 4 million people in it's metro area, but once you get out of that...there's nothing for hours.

If you want to impact as many people as possible, it makes sense to put them in the two largest cities in the country.

yeah it is. That makes me think that the concorde its staying where it is. There is plenty of room on the intrepid for the shuttle if they rearrange some things.,

The further the more people have to travel to get to see them the more gas they use; I'm guessing NASA's going green.

Nope, they are building a glass hanger where the Concorde currently is to house the shuttle. No word on where the concorde will end up.
