1) Although in modern ink, we don't know exactly when Flint composed this. What does Spock mean by 'modern'? 20th/21st/22nd/23rd century? Or just anything post-Brahms' era? All we know is that the ink is not of the period of Brahms himself.
2) Spock is distracted by the piece because of Clue # 1 (which is made pointed by Kirk's disinterested dismissal). The discontinuity leads Spock to eventually conclude that Flint is Brahms, and thus immortal.

Very good guess, fits the clues, but was the makeup jar metal or a gold painted plastic jar?? amazing how different object can be the answer, but not correct

Most of the clues are obvious when you know the object. So why would the "Captain" of the Enterprise have a nail file? and even if he did would he dare use in that fashion in front of his crew? How many time did he use it in front of McCoy? probably never before so it should have made McCoy a little suspicious of Lester-Kirk.
