My thoughts on SGU

Just watched through the first 10 episodes again, and I think it's really good, certainly better than Atlantis.

SGU is the only Stargate show that I liked. Gone are the sarcastic remarks from military commanders who act half the time as if it's all a game (which makes it hard for the viewer to take the danger seriously), bwa ha ha villains and the pine forests. I really appreciate that they're trying to make the show more gritty and dealing with the small details of deep space travel. It has its flaws but not enough to keep me away.

While I often enjoyed SG-1 (Atlantis to a lesser extent), I also tend to agree with the general sentiment behind this statement.

I've enjoyed enough of the episodes so far to come back for the second half of the season. It's good to see that they'll be introducing some actual villains into the show and picking up the pace a bit.

Like most new shows, it's working out it's kinks. I think SGU will be with us for awhile. If Caprica can pull out of it's downward spiral (it did), SGU can save itself, too.

I think a lot of the problems SGU have can be shored up by simply tighter writing.

SGU has really tried to delve into character backgrounds, a move I applaud. Unfortunately, most of the character backgrounds we have seen have been so sub-par and downright boring that it has turned a lot of people off. A good example is Young. Okay, we get that he had an affair and his wife is hating on him. But do we really need time out to see Telford sleep with his wife and then Young going to kick Telford's ass?

The ideas of having to fix Destiny and gather supplies earlier on was a good idea. However, they seem to be firing bullets like they're going out of style. I hope it won't be like the VOY episode where they were suddenly running low on power. Young and Rush can't suddenly wake up one morning and say "Oh darn, we're out of ammo!"

These are just some of the things that can be solved but better writing!

For what it's worth, Young did once mention that the ammo they have are what were in the guns when they crossed over. You make a point though, considering they were in a gun battle when they crossed over, they used guns to help get the ice and shot at each other. I guess going by "Time" one could say they still have quite a bit of Ammo left. Bah.

The ammo usage hasn't been that bad, except for the Corporal who emptied a pistol clip at the water drinking sand swarm. There were a couple of rounds fired at the deserters in Air and a couple of rounds in Water and the suicide round fired. The timeline got reset in the episode where they went to the Stargate full auto blast.

Only two rounds were neccessary out of the 20 or so fired. Which is assuming Greer blew up the alien during daylight when the Time timeline was settled.

Okay I`m loving SGU, however it can be a bit boring,"time" need I say more, but Ming-Na blew me away in Life!!!! Wow! This actress made her pain so really to me I actually cried during this episode and that is really unusual for me.

^I want to feel bad in particular for her char, she's the one showing how lost she is without her normal day to day life and lover in her life. but...she's to much of a bitch. I guess that's typical of the IOA members though, but I haven't seen enough episodes with them in it to tell.

^ Agreed however this series does alot to humanises her, more than any other episodes I have seen on stargate regarding the IOA.

I agree. You want to feel for her when she's home with her lover, but then in the next episode she's after Young on murder before a shred of evidence is presented.

Yes it called confliction, you hate her but still feel for her, catch 22...

At least it's staying in character as far as she goes, even in episode one, like five minutes after she escapes nearly dying from orbital bombardment, shes like "Arent you supposed to be locked up? A military dude in charge? No, thanks" Gah. That episode you speak of bugs me, because she tried to but on a showboat trial, without a shred of evidence and then got put out when that young chick...I forget her name..Chloe? tried to keep it fair, and ask her question as they agreed.

I'm not to overly fond (mind you, I am only six or seven episodes in, seven actually) of the Chloe/Scott pairing, for some reason that just doesn't sit right with me. Especially the triangle going on with Eli
Does it count as a triangle when it's two people in a relationship and a guy mopping in the background?

I'm sure they're going for a sort of "coming of age" thing with Chloe but right now she's a whinny, spoiled senator's daughter. I have no idea what Eli sees in her besides she's a girl and she talks to him.

Why he'd chase after her rather than Lt. James who's emotionally stable, can handle a firearm, and has... uh... other assets I'll never know.

Eli doesn't have the confidence to go after her, plus she's got her eyes set on Lt. Scott. Unless Eli and James get a lot of bonding time, it wouldn't make sense.

"Never tell me the odds!" ;)

If Scott was dumb enough to ditch Vanessa for Chloe it would be my mission in life to pick up the slack. No better opportunity than being trapped on a spaceship billions of light-years from home!

Also, wasn't she sleeping with Young at some point?
That's Lt. Tamara "Looks just like Scarlett" Johansen. Also not a bad choice but she does appear to be hauling an entire baggage car worth of issues behind her. It might be worth the risk.
