My journey in Deep Space

So-so episode. I couldn't get past the notion of why, in this great big universe, did he have to travel all the way to Bajor and attack a militarized base to take the symbiont of a Starfleet officer? Even if he had been accepted as a recipient, he would not have had the Dax symbiont. Am I forgetting something?

"Cardassians"

"An orphaned Cardassian who was adopted and raised by Bajorans seeks help when his Cardassian biological father seeks custody, involving the station in a conspiracy to hide Cardassian children on Bajor."

A very interesting idea in this episode. How do you raise and love a child that represents everything you hate? I don't think they explored the idea fully enough but at least the episode had a social message. I particularly liked Sisko telling Bashir not to interrupt him again.

I didn't like "The Emissary" at first but it has since grown on me.

Well I haven't been visiting these boards too much of late. I decided it was time for me to get back into the community. So I decided that I would document my first complete viewing of Deep Space Nine. I'm going to use this thread as a journal of my thoughts and feelings, whatever they be, as I go through the series. Feel free to stop in and say hello.

And so it begins.....(yes I love Babylon 5)

"The Emissary"

I've seen this episode several times before and I used to think the sequences with Sisko describing his species were boring. This time I actually enjoyed his description of linear time and it made me wonder what it would be like to live outside of time.

The battle at Wolf 359 was cool and had some great effects shots. Patrick Stewart's cameo was predictable but Sisko talked back to him, which was fun.

How big is DS9 supposed to be? I never really got a sense of its scope. I hate to bring up B5 already but I really felt like that station had a great scope and life to it that I didn't feel in DS9, I know its an unfair comparison for the first episode but its just something I was thinking about.

Episode 1 down, I hope I can stick to this journal.

"Melora"

"A scientist from a planet with very light gravity arrives on the station with her natural metabolism acting as a severe handicap. Bashir falls in love with her and devises a "treatment" to alter her metabolism to human norms so she can work among them, but she refuses it."

After reading the first Titan novel I was wondering who Melora Pazlar was. Now I know. I really didn't understand her "disability" and I felt that it could have been handled better. Good to see Bashir finally getting some action with the ladies. The Klingon restaurant was hilarious and probably the highlight for me.

So many people have their list of episodes that are the worst in the entire series. And Melora usually seems to escape being on those lists for some reason.

My list is much shorter than most, but Melora is near the top.

During my series watch-throughs, I usually have to take a few shots of Jack before watching it.

Drinking and Star Trek are two things that must be combined very carefully as inebriation serves to enhance crap episodes while diminishing excellent ones.

Perhaps I shall release a pocket guide...

"Rules of Acquisition"

"A female Ferengi, disguised as a male, helps Quark make a tremendous profit, but risks everything when she falls in love with him. First mention on the Dominion on the series."

Maybe a little tulaberry wine would have made this episode better.

"Necessary Evil"

"When Quark is almost murdered, Odo must reopen a very old murder case, begun when the station was under Cardassian control...for which Kira is the prime suspect. In the course of pursuing the killer, he realizes that sometimes justice is blind for a reason."

Amazing episode. Everything about this episode was perfect. The direction was terrific. The station felt very cold and foreign under the Cardassians. Odo was fantastic in every scene. His log entries were hilarious and brooding at the same time. Auberjonois played two different Odo's that both felt true to character. I really believed that Kira was innocent, I'm still in TNG mode. The ending was the best ending for any DS9 episode thus far. I hope this incident really has an impact on their relationship, though I doubt it will.

"Second Sight"

"Sisko meets a mysterious woman who strongly resembles the wife of an alien scientist visiting the station. He begins to fall in love with her, but learns too late that she is not what she appears."

I liked this episode. I liked seeing Sisko as a man and having feelings for a new woman. For some reason I just connected with this episode.

"Sanctuary"

"A matriarchal race fleeing persecution in the Gamma Quadrant claims Bajor as its legendary homeland and requests permission to settle there. Kira, the liaison between the leaders and her own people, is torn when she realizes that Bajor perceives the newcomers as a burden."

The scenes with the Universal Translator seemed completely forced and unnecessary.

The bombastic scientist was fun and Sally Richardson is hot. Otherwise, nuff said? :D

Could they have made those people a little more unappealing?

"Rivals"

"A sexy grifter arrives on Deep Space Nine and opens a bar to rival Quark's, but his games wreak havoc on the station...or so Quark believes, until Dax realizes that there's an even bigger problem."

I have nothing to say about this episode. It was simply there.

"The Alternate"

"Dr. Mora, the Bajoran scientist who "discovered" Odo and raised him, comes to the station determined to track the shapeshifter's origins. While he works, over Odo's objections, a strange menace begins to make attacks on the station."

Who knew Odo had Daddy issues?

Amen on the first statement. You should concerning the second.:techman:

Seriously. I want that guide. What drinks go good for what episodes? Should any episodes be made into drinking games? This is important stuff.
