My journey in Deep Space

"If Wishes Were Horses"

"Crewmembers' fantasies come to life - some silly and harmless, some deadly. Of course it turns out to be a meddling alien."

TNG episode all the way. I really liked the idea behind the episode, having your dreams come to life is a thrill. However, the crews dreams could have been a little more interesting. It wasn't really there dreams though was it? It was kind of just what their imagination was thinking about at the time. It definitely got me thinking about what my imagination was doing today and what would come to life for me.;)

Is Bashir really that much of a ladies man? In the teaser, when he was hitting on Dax, they mentioned the recent ladies that occupied his time. From what I've seen he seems to strike out with woman a lot more than he succeeds.

As I said in another thread; Remember the baseball Bokai threw to Ben as he vanished. It's probably the only thing of any significance to come of the episode.

I'm sure most people don't care. But it's something of a Trekkie 'easter egg'.

That whole character choice didn't seem to work out so well. I was glad when they moved Bashir past that phase a bit down the road.

Bashir is an interesting one, especially when watching the beginning of the series.

I can see how many would feel that Sidig was in the running for worst actor and most annoying character on the show. And while the writers never *quite* did as much with Bashir as they could have, they certainly allowed Sidig to spread his wings a bit after the first season.

I say never *quite* because Sidig is a fantastic actor and I have a hard time remembering a moment where he was given the opportunity to show that as Bashir.

His portrayal as the Kajada consciousness in season one wasn't very compelling. Though, I can see that it would be a hard task. The confident, Our Man Bashir and the genetically enhanced Bashir, he really ran with.

That's interesting. I never noticed that he didn't have the baseball before then. :)

"The Forsaken"

"While an alien entity wreaks havoc with the station's computer, Lwaxana Troi comes on to Odo. The shapeshifter finds that he actually has quite a bit in common with the unconventional woman."

A rather useless episode. Of course we get another TNG cameo, the third of the season.

I know it wasn't one of the best episodes, but I always enjoyed Mrs Troi. That tender moment between she and Odo was really something. :)

"Dramatis Personae"

"An engineered virus delivered by a dying Klingon pits the crew against one another and themselves. While Kira leads a revolt on the station, Sisko builds antique clocks, O'Brien sees conspiracies everywhere, and Dax and Kira get surprisingly close. Fortunately, Odo figures out what's going on and administers an antidote in the nick of time."

The first disagreement on DS9 is caused by a virus.

"Duet"

"A Cardassian whom Kira believes to be a mass murderer of Bajorans is taken prisoner on the station while seeking medical attention. Though an investigation at first seems to prove that Kira has the Butcher of Gallitep in custody, she slowly realizes that her prisoner is not who he claims to be, nor what he seems to be."

Wow. Really what else can I say that hasnt been said before. Now that is what Star Trek is all about. Simply a fantastic hour of television.

One of the finest episodes of Star Trek ever. I show it to anybody who I can get to sit down and watch it.

I find that many viewers unfairly rate DS9 season 1 as a below average season because it's too TNG-esque. But remember that back when DS9 first aired, the writers had to wean viewers off TNG and slowly let them acclimate themselves to DS9's darker atmosphere and stories. I feel that season 1 does that job extrememly well, scattering 3 to 4 TNG-like episode before ending with some very DS9 stories like "Duet" and "In the Hands of the Prophets". Even the TNG-like stories have very DS9 specific elements, like Kira kidnapping a scientist to stop the plague in "Babel", or the crew immediately jumping into assumption that Q's to blame in "Q-less". These are things that the you wouldn't catch the crew of the Enterprise doing.

There was that episode of TNG where Data attempted to kill a seriously evil man who had kidnapped and murdered with impunity - once he computed that he should not obey his do not kill imperative. He seriously had to kill this guy! That was a great Data/TNG episode.

Anyway, I stayed up late last night so I tuned in to Spike. This is a great episode in which I start to see some real "humanity" and dimension in the Cardassians. That consciousness is there below their blusteringly evil exterior, and in other ways shown in the relationships they have with friends, and their devotion to children and family over the course of the series. (I know, Hitler loved his dog too. :D )

Seemed like a very well written script and paced very nicely as well.

"In The Hands Of The Prophets"

"Conservative Vedek Winn comes to the station to protest Bajoran children being taught that their Prophets are mere aliens in a wormhole rather than a celestial temple...and to make an attempt on the life of the more liberal Vedek Bareil, a likely candidate to become Kai."

Not much of a season finale but an episode that I still enjoyed very much. This is the kind of episode that TNG wouldn't do. However it did remind me of a TOS episode with its overt social message. Very good episode nonetheless.

I got a busy couple of days coming up so don't expect another update until next week sometime. I should finish Bloodletter tonight though. I'm just wondering what to read next.

Fallen Heroes was an early favorite of mine.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it was my first exposure to DS9, period.
