Most ridiculous thing about TOS

I'm no feminist by any means, but a female uniform that constantly flashes her panties. Undignified and unprofessional looking. Sure the two pilots depicted a trouser option, but it was no where to be seen in the series.
Actually it did appear briefly during the first season in the background on cast extras.

Both pilots show glimpses of paths not taken for the series.

I rather wish they had been able to find a good tunic design for the women to go with the trousers. It's a visual thing, but it would have helped sell the equality-between-sexes idea as well as look more professional. We wouldn't see this idea adressed again until TMP. The problem with the miniskirt uniform is that the context in society has changed greatly since the '60s and '70s--the miniskirt no longer represents female emancipation and assertiveness.

Having Number as First Officer was a decent idea that was unfortunately bungled later. Somehow NBC not liking Majel Barrett cast in the role became not depicting any women in command roles until seeing an entire Romulan squadron commanded by a woman in "The Enterprise Incident," and she was an alien. There was nothing throughout TOS that expressly stated a woman could not command, but they never chose to explore it. All it would have taken was one solitary instance of seeing a woman as a Captain, a Commodore or an Admiral and it would have laid the whole issue to rest. A terrible missed opportunity.

Number One was serving as captain. It would have been nice if more had been done in that direction, I agree, but that settles the issue as far as I am concerned.

For myself I agree, but given how much traction this issue has had with fans over the years it's apparent that something more tangible was needed.

Janice Lester stated quite vehemently that women could not serve as Captains in Starfleet in Turnabout Intruder!

I'm glad they went with the miniskirt option myself and who's to say that fashion would not go back that way in the far future anyway?
JB

^ Even if it was said by somebody like Lester, a person with no credibility whatsoever? That's stretching things a bit.

You have two conflicting ideas. One, is that women can't be starship captains. Two, but that idea is being spouted by a complete nut job that has committed homicide against her colleagues and was going to execute Scott and McCoy for mutiny. Is Janice Lester a reliable source of information about Starfleet and its policies towards women?

Out of universe, this is the same show that gave us Number One and the Romulan Commander. Did anyone ever ask Gene Roddenberry or Art Wallace about Lester's comments about no female starship captains?

Fair point.

I've always wanted to know if the idea of featuring a female ship captain or Commodore or Admiral was ever floated sometime throughout the series (even for only one time) and got shot down or it's just a case of it not occuring to anyone.

I mistakenly credited Art Wallace when it should've been Arthur Singer.

I still remember in the original pilot when Captain Pike had a clipboard with paper on it. I loled so hard at that. They got rid of it in the regular series, but it was so ridiculous that anyone could think this would be something in use in the 23rd century.... Thoughts?

Yet, electronic paper is still a technology of the future. It may look anachronistic now. But, wait twenty years and it will look futuristic again.

I'm no feminist by any means, but a female uniform that constantly flashes her panties. Ultimately for me I guess, it's undignified and unprofessional looking. Sure the two pilots depicted a trouser option on the likes of Number One & Elizabeth Dehner, but they were no where to be seen in the series.

Undignified and unprofessional to 2016 western sensibilities maybe. But clearly in the 23rd century it will be considered not only dignified and professional, but practical as well.

Yep! If it was said in TOS then I believed it! :bolian:
JB

Well, TOS gives conflicting information. You can believe what Janice Lester said, or you can believe what "The Menagerie" showed. The latter seems to have more weight, to me.

I believe it adds to the charm of that pilot.
Yes, it would be considered antiquated, but later in the pilot you could see a paper printout spitting from the console (matter of fact, it appeared to be the same piece of paper that was attached to the clipboard; pretty wrinkled for a fresh printout).
Perhaps Captain Pike liked the "old" things; after all he had a console TV in his quarters.

Please everyone, resist commenting on the female captain thing. It's a cancer that I've seen consume whole threads alive. We must stamp it out while we still have the chance.

I therefore declare:

You are right. You can continue going forward knowing that you not only won the debate, but you were right all along.
