Most disturbing scene in star trek?

TMP was the major turning point for Spock, he finally met a being of pure logic devoid of emotions and realized what a terrible existence it really was. It made him realize "You know, these feelings that I've been embarrassed by and tried to expel actually have made my life much fulfilling than if I really was totally logical. I should probably finally begin to appreciate that I can experience the merits of both species than deny one over the other."
I have never thought of it like this. Very good explanation

It kind of helps that they also dropped most of the human/vulcan racist talk between him and McCoy.

I never saw it as racist. I think in the 24th century we will have evolved beyond racism as we see it today, since humanity was united after the 3rd world war. I think it would be acceptable to make remarks like those 2 used to -they still respected each other professionally and on a friendship level. They feel able and free to voice their feelings within a work environment without the PC brigade coming down on them. Saying those things to different races of humans now would be be racist because of the split world we live in. The 24th century is totally different environment

I don't know, if you replaced all of McCoy's "You-green blooded son of a bitch!" stuff with "You black skinned son of a bitch!" it really makes him quite unsympathetic.

Spock was racist right back though, and very hypocritical when you remember that the Vulcans in fact were way WORSE than humans ever were and committed far worse acts of barbarity.

Also, that rape and torture are somehow okay under certain circumstances (need info, limited time) which would seem to go against Star Trek's principles and credo. A nasty step in the "darkening" of Star Trek. A direction that, unfortunately, some fans seem to desire.

The "darkening" of Trek is desirable (at least in my opinion) because it creates interest in the show. The Invincible Good Guys who can never do any wrong fighting against the Evil Guys gets kind of boring, so both sides were given darker aspects, which I think improves the show because it's easier to relate to. You never see perfect little good guys fighting mostly harmless bad guys.

For example, in What You Leave Behind where the old woman is shot by the Jem'Hadar. It strengthens the Jem'Hadar as evil things that should be killed and makes you want the good guys to win.

Then, when Spock mind-rapes Valeris. It gives the impression that Spock, up until now, kind of a grandfatherly, silly character like Gandalf the Grey, is done with playing games and doesn't really want to be effed with- in essence, becoming Gandalf the White. It adds depth to the character and makes him more interesting to watch.

Reminds me of Day of Dove where Scotty and Spock had that exchange.

It was pretty tense and effective for only a few minutes of dialog.

I always wondered if what Spock did could be called "mind rape", since he was just trying to extract information, but the scene did have an uncomfortable, strange effect.

"That Vidiian with the human officer's face in "faces" "

that! when i saw that last year for the first time i was like WTF!!!!!

remember now valeris was his favorite student, and she very much looked up to spock... makes it more creepier

 Instead of Picard chiming in with a message, it feels like this should have ended with one of those animated "G.I. Joe" P.S.A graphics, after Wesley says, "Now I know!" AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE! :nyah:

Watching Rojan the Kelvin crush the distilled solid form of one of the two Enterprise crewmembers in "By Any Other Name." Just knowing that one of those young innocent people had just died in such a cold display of power was sad enough, but (unless your paying uber attention I suppose) you don't really know which one. It sort of forces your mind to play those "lesser-of-two-evil" mind games where you feel guilty hoping for one or the other to survive. It wasn't gross, but more mentally disturbing.

In my mind when I first watched it, I always thought the two officers were still alive in brick form, and when Rojan crushes the block, the poor officer actually felt it.

What would have made it even more shocking/nightmarish is if the block had screamed in pain. But then it would've been like Sapphire & Steel :)

Most shocking? If the crushed block turns back into a pile of chunky salsa. I always kind of thought it would as a kid.

^^^ Or if the block had been hollow and filled with a red goo, that ran down over Rojan's hand and arm.

I don't remember what episode it was, but there's this one episode of TNG where some weird "anomaly" is causing the ship to act up, putting people and furniture in unexpected places. At one point, we hear a blood curdling scream before seeing a woman dead after being embedded in the floor! The image of her corpse like that (what a hideous way to die!) has always freaked me out, and I'm sure it always will.

Ack, I came into this thread with that specific scene in mind, but I was derailed with "By Any Other Name!" So thanks for mentioning it. When I watch that scene again, it's not so much the image of the woman phased through the floor (though that certainly helps), it's the scream that really sells it.

Founder: I want the Cardassians exterminated.
Weyoun: Which ones?
Founder: All of them. The entire population.

Disturbing. Surprised to see it go that far. And how coldly and calmly she ordered it.

That one always brought out creepy if not sad thoughts for the same reason.

Same reaction here.

The Voyager episode where the Viidian crazy guy of the week killed a redshirt and then pealed the face off the guy and put it on his face so he would look more appealing to the Klingon woman.

Real Ed Gein, Psycho territory.
