More Tosk

One of my favorite episodes from the first season is "Captive Pursuit" with Tosk from the Gamma quadrant. Were they even in the background in future episodes? I wish that species was explored in other episodes.

I do remember that the Hunters were supposed to be members of the Dominion - a Hunter was supposed to appear in "Broken Link" (to take the helm of the Defiant on the way to the Founder homeworld) but somehow that got changed to a Jem'Hadar.

Also, the Tosk and the Jem'Hadar were both created from the same "original" race. They even have the same 'shrouding' ability.

I would have liked to see more different GQ species. After the first season we pretty much only saw Founders, Gem'Hadar and Vorta with only a handful of exceptions. It would have been nice to see more examples of how people lived under the Dominion. Not just civilizations destroyed like in The Quickening, civilizations which toe the line too.

Tosk probably died shortly after Captive Pursuit though.

Agreed. One of my favorite episode from the 1st season, and there were more, where O'Brien befriends this interesting creature from the Gamma Quadrant. Not only would I had like to see more of the Tosk aliens but learn more about the mysterious Hunters. I liked the designs from the cool looking helmets they had and the weapons used. There was so much promise I was appreciating from DS9 and Tosk and the Hunters were an example of the potential of what's in the Gamma Quadrant. Season 2 the aliens from the GQ gets even better, but I too believe it was a missed opportunity to return or explore this species of Tosk and the Hunters.

I've said a few times this is one of my favourite Star Trek episodes. I loved the story, I loved Tosk, I loved the look of the aliens, I loved the technology they used. It's such a shame this species never showed up again but it does make sense they were probably part of The Dominion. I actually preferred the look of the Tosk race to the look of the Jem'Hadar.

I also agree about the lack of Gamma Quadrant races after Season 2. People say there's nothing left to explore in the Prime Universe but we've hardly seen anything of the Gamma Quadrant and practically nothing of the Beta Quadrant.

It was a great episode, one of the best from that season for sure, and I agree Tosk is a character that deserved a follow-up episode. That said, the idea of him still being out there one step ahead forever is in itself a great way to remember him.

It was what DS9 used to be, a bold series which showed the promise of optimism. I can definitely see Tosk being many steps away from the Hunters.

Not to mention every other galaxy.

And it was also a reminder that it is possible to introduce brand new aliens into the series and for them to be very popular.

It was definitely a flood gate to explore the possibilities to see what's out there in Deep Space with out exploring every planet those individuals came from. I was completely blown away by the effort from the production to NOT bring back aliens (Klingons and Romulans) we've seen or known before and move forward with progressive storytelling and alien make up designs.
It's a disappointment the Dominion couldn't have been a legion which ruled a sector of the Gamma Quadrant than be the entire f^cking RULERS OF THE ENTIRE THING. Becoming the new Borg threat which killed any creative storytelling to explore that space, and now it's Star Wars on TV. The visual introduction of the Breen was a let down, and an indication the Berman camp gave up on the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine concept.

Why should we think the Dominion ruled the entire Gamma Quadrant? Humans/Feds are designated the Alpha Quadrant rulers, too - but in neither case is there an "entire" there.

What we could easily accept is that while Gamma is no doubt teeming with interstellar empires of all sorts, the Dominion is fanatical and powerful enough to stop anybody else from accessing the wormhole. I mean, not all Gamma empires might be, but the one that happens to sit on top of the wormhole has it in spades. The Gamma equivalents of Klingons and Cardassians wouldn't stand a chance of making an appearance.

Doesn't mean there shouldn't have been more Tosk.

I can only go with what was on the show. When there was a Tosk, the concept of the all powerful Dominion didn't exist. It was better then, but I'd love to see more Tosk and the Hunters, and the expansion of imagination.

No all the Gamma Quadrant was part of the Dominion. The planet in The Quickening was described as being outside Dominion space. The refugees in Sanctuary had been uprooted by Dominion conquest, suggesting that their presence in that part of space was recent.

When was the idea of the Dominion first mentioned? Earliest I can think of is Rules of Acquisition, then Sanctuary.

I figured that there are lots of aliens living close to the wormhole but in Gem'Hadar an edict went out to the entire Dominion forbidding travel through the wormhole.

I'd conjecture that the Dominion is probably a similar size to the Federation only with a larger military, but I doubt there would be many similar powers nearby. The Founders would never be content with any powers led by solids that they can not control. The boundaries of their space are probably a large power void where there are no threats large enough to be worth extending supply lines.

They were also mentioned in Shadowplay.

Somewhere I read that the producers conceived as a power that was rapidly and aggressively expanding its power in the Gamma Quadrant in the process of becoming the hegemonic power. Although they saw the area around the womhole as their space, they had no presence in the region until they noticed colonization activities from the Alpha Quadrant. I think that they were trying to stake a claim to the region by attacking the colonies and threatening the Federation in "Jem'hadar."

No piece of dialogue ever suggests the Dominion would control the entire Gamma Quadrant, or even any sizeable part of it. Indeed, many in Gamma have never heard of them.

Which might be in keeping with the general strategy of their masters: the Founders do want to control everything, but at the same time they don't want to reveal themselves, out of fear of exposing themselves to "further persecution by Solids". So they only emerge when they are ready to conquer...

...But the wormhole was too big a temptation, and they overextended themselves a bit. No doubt their control of that region is solid now (even if they execute me for the pun), though. Alpha can wait.

I can side with that, but it still destroyed any possibilities to explore storylines excluding the cliche' threat of the DOMINION, and forever the Gamma Quadrant means Dominion space. I love the times, as limited as they were, there was a lot of potential in the concept of the new area of space where the writing talent couldn't live up too.

Yeah, small section, but the Dominion has a lot of space. Too much space from those Star Wars seasons of DS9.

The Founders ignored any solids they did not consider a threat, that does not necessarily mean they did not control the surrounding space.
