More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, gym

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

I sometimes think I'm talking to myself...

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

She's like the Weird Al of the 24th Century

LOL. :D
Finally, I know what it's based off of! I thought she just made up some random tune on the spot. Hmm.

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

Not a fan either, though I do appreciate how we get to see the crew on their off hours. It makes the ship more believable, but the song is totally gay.
That song hasn't got the style to be "gay". I think you mean "lame".

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

It was an old tune based on Bonny Prince Charlie of Scotland. Uhura, like any good musician, was improvising and playing around with the lyrics to suit the moment.

She's like the Weird Al of the 24th Century

Thanks for the info. That last sentence is very witty, but why did you have to type it? From now on, whenever I see or read about Uhura, I'm going to have an unsavory image in my mind of Weird Al's head on Uhura's body!

You're practically inviting someone to photoshop it...

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

On the subject of the "rec-room" scene, anyone notice the exchange between Uhura and Rand just before Uhura does the song?

As Spock starts the music, the two ladies give a silent giggle. Rand looks as if an idea just hit her, and she grins mischeviously and cocks her head in Spock direction. Uhura slowly nods, winks, and begins her song.

As the crew all share the joke at the Vulcan's expense, Rand keeps her gaze focused on Spock, at one point biting her lower lip in anticipation.

And of course, when Uhura finishes, Rand calls for an encore!

Hmm...conspiracy, anyone?

I just saw this ep a few weeks ago and I definitely took it as them "teasing" him...and not in a sexual way. I know people look to this episode as part of the foundation for this Spock/Uhura romance but I just don't see it...or if you see it you're really stretching the scene to make it fit.

I think Spock is a very "good sport" about the whole thing and he seems slightly amused by it.

I think this scene would of been better if they would of cut a verse from the song...this melodic interlude goes on a bit too long.

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

While I like the overall scene, I've never liked Uhura's song. I just thought it was a bit too weird for me to enjoy. I've always wondered, though, if she were "supposed" to make up those words on the spot (as if, you know, all that were actually happening) or if the song already existed as some sort of folk song that developed on the ship.

Yeah she must of made the words up "on the spot"..because Charlie comes in after she's done with Spock and she sings a round for him too..... so she is obviously just be making it up as it comes to her. Yeah, she's just gifted like that.

I stand corrected. The song is too lame to be gay.

Yup and yup. Nice scene -- Spock being one of the gang. Note his early half-smile.

^And his frustrated shrug when Uhura breaks out in a loud, high-pitched hum, distracting him from his harp.

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

^^^ That's right...so to sum it up Spock was not really interested in Uhura in a sexual nature and vice-versa...Uhura and Rand were teasing him as "friends" sometimes do and that is the extent of it. I know everyone will agree with me on this...(lol)...now where is DevilEyes?

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

I love that episode I have seen it three times Uhura was some singer and it was interesting seeing how the crew spend their time off duty

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

But weren't Blish's adaptations based upon actual script drafts that he was given to work from?
Yeah--early drafts, many of them.

Still...you'd think he'd have the good sense to WATCH the episodes as they came out....

How could he, if, as was true for the first few volumes, he's writing his adaptations while the series is in production? Remember, the higher the volume number, the closer the adaptation is to the aired episode. Even when Blish's wife took over the last one(two?) after he died.

*snort* Goes on too long? It goes on forever! I agree with you....its next on the list of torture methods right after waterboarding....

That faceless woman is moi creepy. And that face Charlie makes, rolling his eyes up like that.....OY!

But for me, as the parent of a teenager in hormonal hell, a teen with raging hormones and THOSE powers? The most frightening thing of all!

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

I've just watched Charlie X and although I've seen lots of Trek episodes I think this is my first time with this one and I've got to say, it's damn weird! Especially Shatner in the gym wearing those ridiculous trousers! One interesting thing is how Uhura flirts with Spock in both of the first two episodes. If it hadn't been made in 1966 I'd have thought they were setting them up to get together, so I can see where the Spock/Uhura thing in the latest film came from.

HA!! I've experienced that. "Hey man, can I sit in?" (You're screaming NO in your head, but have to be cool.)

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

Yes, or I should say the lack of one.

Yeah, I gotta say, when I was a kid I thought that was one of the creepiest things I'd ever see. In a way, it still is.

You mean this person?:

Wish it into the corn field, Charlie. Wish it into the corn field.

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

When the Thasians made it that "everything is as it was", did that include the faceless woman? And how could she make sounds without a mouth or nostrils?

Re: More on Charlie X: Rec Room scene, Spock's lyre, Uhura's songs, g

vocal cords
