She's like the Weird Al of the 24th Century
That song hasn't got the style to be "gay". I think you mean "lame".Not a fan either, though I do appreciate how we get to see the crew on their off hours. It makes the ship more believable, but the song is totally gay.
It was an old tune based on Bonny Prince Charlie of Scotland. Uhura, like any good musician, was improvising and playing around with the lyrics to suit the moment.

You're practically inviting someone to photoshop it...It was an old tune based on Bonny Prince Charlie of Scotland. Uhura, like any good musician, was improvising and playing around with the lyrics to suit the moment.

Thanks for the info. That last sentence is very witty, but why did you have to type it? From now on, whenever I see or read about Uhura, I'm going to have an unsavory image in my mind of Weird Al's head on Uhura's body!

On the subject of the "rec-room" scene, anyone notice the exchange between Uhura and Rand just before Uhura does the song?
As Spock starts the music, the two ladies give a silent giggle. Rand looks as if an idea just hit her, and she grins mischeviously and cocks her head in Spock direction. Uhura slowly nods, winks, and begins her song.
As the crew all share the joke at the Vulcan's expense, Rand keeps her gaze focused on Spock, at one point biting her lower lip in anticipation.
And of course, when Uhura finishes, Rand calls for an encore!
Hmm...conspiracy, anyone?
While I like the overall scene, I've never liked Uhura's song. I just thought it was a bit too weird for me to enjoy. I've always wondered, though, if she were "supposed" to make up those words on the spot (as if, you know, all that were actually happening) or if the song already existed as some sort of folk song that developed on the ship.

I just saw this ep a few weeks ago and I definitely took it as them "teasing" him...and not in a sexual way. I know people look to this episode as part of the foundation for this Spock/Uhura romance but I just don't see it...or if you see it you're really stretching the scene to make it fit.
I think Spock is a very "good sport" about the whole thing and he seems slightly amused by it.
I think this scene would of been better if they would of cut a verse from the song...this melodic interlude goes on a bit too long.
Yeah--early drafts, many of them. But weren't Blish's adaptations based upon actual script drafts that he was given to work from?
Still...you'd think he'd have the good sense to WATCH the episodes as they came out....

^And his frustrated shrug when Uhura breaks out in a loud, high-pitched hum, distracting him from his harp.
Yes, or I should say the lack of one.
Yeah, I gotta say, when I was a kid I thought that was one of the creepiest things I'd ever see. In a way, it still is.
