MLB World Series 2018: Eh. Dodgers/Boston. Eh.

You follow this more closely than I, what in your opinion should be his first target?

1) Investigating potential collusion during the 2017 - 18 offseason
2) Killing the QO system, as it's essentially a form of restricted free agency, and restricted free agency ... isn't "free"
3) Killing the luxury tax as currently instituted (which is a soft salary cap)

Thanks.

Do you find the "opener" trend troubling? I ask because it appears as if the folks in the Upstairs Office may have found a way around paying top dollar for starting pitchers.

Do you mean that weird-ass thing that teams like the Rays have been trying, where they start a game with a reliever pitching like an inning or maybe two before bringing in the actual starter?

Yes. They have a premium reliever, than a long reliever, or instead of a fifth starter they run multiple relievers. The A's have effectively started running relievers in the sixth inning, and other teams have reportedly looked into dumping the fifth starter for a "reliever" day.

Bullpen games have been a common thing for several years, especially late in the season when playoff contenders start looking to preserve their starters' arms (the Cubs definitely needed to do that in 2015; they beat the Mets in the NLCS if Arrieta hadn't had his arm completely cooked at that point ... but then again, they didn't have the bullpen for it). I think the only point of contention, bargaining-wise, is if teams start having their rotation guys come in for the last few innings, because a lot of relievers have "games finished"-related bonuses in their contracts. So, sure, I'd expect Jeets' Marlins to do that kind of fuckery, but unless that becomes hugely widespread, I'm not sure that's a genuine issue.

This is why you're seeing teams put an increased focused on having multiple long relievers on the roster who can do spot starts or allow for a six-man rotation; when the Cubs kicked the tires on Manny Machado, for example, they flat-out refused to involve Mike Montgomery in the discussions, which the Orioles said was a non-starter.

Ohtani has "new" damage to UCL

TJ surgery has been recommended. A shame, but really not a surprise. 5 years in the Japanese league isn't as much as others have done, but being a two way player there.....

Just saw that. A shame for the Angels. They really are wasting Mike Trout.

Might be time to move him to the outfield, full-time. He would still be a great bargain at the MLB minimum for the next five years, if he can keep hitting the way he does.

Ohtani is a DH when he’s not pitching.

Which next time will be in about two years.

The Detroit Tigers have suspended their primary broadcast team after the pair got into a physical altercation earlier this week.

You have to wonder how two or three people in a broadcast booth get along. Sometimes it sounds as if they at least like each other. Then there's other times you can hear the tension.

Len And J.D. for the Cubs always sound friendly enough.

I'm surprised Harrelson and Stone for the White Sox never got into a fight. They're both incredibly fucking annoying.

Royals took a perfect game into the bottom of the 9th (in Minnesota). Then Max Kepler walked and Robbie Grossman singled.

This would have been the first Royals no-no since Saberhagen in '91 (IIRC, they've never had a perfect game).

Deshaies is a bit of an old-school guy and you can tell he's getting pissed off when Kasper starts talking about some advanced stat or another and he tries to shut that shit down. I've also heard, through the grapevine, that there's a bit of tension between them because Kasper has gotten to call national broadcast games. (Source: My last boss' sister is married to Kasper.) Generally, they have a good rapport, though it was clear that Kasper was struggling to find any way to connect with Deshaies in the first year after Brenly walked, and he was badly missing Brenly.

My favorite broadcast duo is probably Gary Thorne and Jim Palmer in Baltimore, though. Palmer's book, "Together We Were Eleven-Foot-Nine," is one of the few tomes I re-read every year.

Harrelson should have retired ten years ago, and Stone has always struck me as someone who thinks he’s smarter than he really is because he played the game. I can’t stand the Phillies’ current broadcast team (Tom McCarthy and Ben Davis, with John Kruk and Mike Schmidt working weekends). I suppose whoever followed Harry Kalas was never going to make me happy, but this group is awful.
