MLB World Series 2018: Eh. Dodgers/Boston. Eh.

The Cubs' Alec Mills had a pretty good debut. 5.2IP, 3H, 1BB, 8K, 1ER. He gave his team a chance to win, unlike a certain former starter I could mention.

And David Bote hits another walk off homer in the bottom of the 10th for the win.

So Matz starts for the Mets today.

Gives up one run in 7 innings.

The bullpen gives up 14 runs in the 8th and 9th.

Mets lose 15-0, and Matz takes the loss.

Wow. That fucking sucks.

And that's why wins and losses suck. I'm actually surprised they are still widely used and accepted in fantasy baseball.
Indeed. They're the most useless stats, fantasy or otherwise. Misleading in all directions and ultimately pointless. It boggles my mind people still hang onto them anymore.

It's pitcher wins / losses, and then batter RBI that are the demonic trinity of unholy baseball stats.

"Luke here! Voit is adroit!"

Oh, John... :guffaw:

Sigh. I know. How about "Didi Gregorious makes Yankee fans euphorious!"? :ack:

Well, the old dude is 80, so if you just think of him as a corny old grandpa it's not so annoying. Also impressive that Sterling keeps up that travel schedule at his age.

He's gotten a lot of flak over the years but he's kind of grown on me. I like his enthusiasm, his bad calls, (if he says something's a homer don't take it to the bank), and his wonderful radio voice in spite of "THUHHHHHHHH YANKEES WIN!"

Maybe somebody should start a thread about sportscasters and call-in sports shows. Ah, Mike Francesa, how do I loathe thee - let me count the ways.

Yep. But that conventional thinking about wins got Jack Morris into the Hall of Fame (he "pitched to the win"). But compare his lifetime statistics to Bob Friend. That poor guy pitched for some terrible Pirates teams in the 1950s and early 1960s. Morris's lifetime W% is 0.577 in 3824 IP. Friends' is 0.461 in 3611 IP. Morris's WAR = 44.0. Friends's WAR = 46.8. Actually, in most of the pitching statistics Friend is marginally better than Morris.

Someone needs to start a "Bob Friend for the Hall of Fame" campaign. ;)

As corny as he is, at least Sterling genuinely enjoys what he's doing. That alone makes all the difference.

And sometimes his calls are actually funny. "And like a good Gleyber...State Farm is there..." :guffaw:

^I really wish the Phillies and Yankees had another series scheduled, as I could listen to him trying avoid confusing Odubel Herrera with Asdrubal Cabrera.

Speaking of which, I've heard talk that the Mets are looking to trade Joeybats to the Phillies. Not sure how I feel about that...

^Yes, the Phillies claimed him earlier today. They need another bench bat with Bour on the 10-day DL (strained left oblique). I wonder how many players have played for three teams in the same division in one season since the current divisional alignment was implemented.

Joey Bats to the Phillies is done for cash or a PTBNL; Kapler has said he could see time in the outfield.

I feel so much pity for whomever has to cover CF with Bautista and Hoskins in the corners. Woof.
