Michael’s Art Challenge Thread

I like the idea of one single thread for my monthly art challenge entries, so I'm posting this here rather than in a new thread. After a weekend of intense work on my idea, scrutinizing screenshots and studying walk cycles, I'm finally done. Sorry, no progressional steps this time, but anyways, here is my entry:

It's an homage to one of my favorite Star Trek games of all time: “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Crossroads of Time” for the Super Nintendo (and the Sega Genesis, IIRC). I just love the 16-bit graphics and thought it would be cool to combine it with Discovery. Essentially, this game is from an alternate universe, where the new show premiered in the 90s when such games were still en vouge. Also, since I like to keep it fresh, I did it as an animated GIF.

What do y'all think?
More.

 Thanks guys!

By the way, if anyone has a better idea for the dialog in the GIF, I'd love to hear it. I suck at writing dialog and others here – people like maybe @Nerys Myk – are always good for a quip or something more meaningful. The only restrictions are that it shouldn't be longer and that maybe the character names are a part of it, because otherwise you can't really tell who's who. ;)

Anyone?

Dude... How the hell am I going to beat you when you keep pumping out stuff like this

 We'll see. Looking at the other contest threads I think it's going to be close once the voting goes live. I especially like your MGS take on Enterprise. My first game on the first PlayStation.

Hahaha thanx! I do think the concept can be taken further, but actually making levels for Reed to walk in... That's a long shot. Then again, I'll have to know how much area there is to use before even attempting such a thing.

Yeah, I'm not sure I would attempt something like that either. The fact that it's 3D graphics – crude and simple as they may be – makes it even harder to reproduce. One thing one could do in terms of in-game graphics for your Section 31 game would be these communicator screens from MSG. I imagine it with Hoshi on the left and Reed on the right. Complete with NX-01 era UI design this could look very cool.

Ooooh! Now *that* is something I might find a little bit of time for!

Oh wow! Love it! I would absolutely love to play this game!
Yeah, I would, too. :)

Cool! What software did you use for the animation?
I did all the animation in Photoshop, where I illustrated it as well. I tried doing it in After Effects, because animation comes more easily to me there, but I didn't manage to export an acceptable GIF file out of it. I really tried hard to stay below one megabyte in terms of file size, because otherwise it would take ages to load for everybody here. And that just wasn't possible from AE.

I don't think you have put enough effort into that.. very poor work..... lol
No words dude. Just amazing! :techman:

Thanks, guys! I'm glad you like it. :)

Here are the graphics I created for this. The walk cycle is basically Kira's from “Crossroads of Time”, but with custom hair style, skin color and track suit uniform. The background, though, is completely by me, based on close examination of released set photos. The dialog box interface is based upon photos of the Discovery armrest display (although, weirdly, it has a graphic of the Shenzhou or some similar ship on it).

Other menu choices could be Load, Save, Settings, Restart, and Credits.

But for the sake of efficiency, can we just skip to the part where you tell us what September's challenge is?

Okay, here's what I'm working on for this month's art challenge: a sort of Wimmelbild of a runabout teeming with Deep Space Nine characters. I started this over two years ago, but abandoned it for whatever reason. @Cyfa's challenge is a wonderful opportunity to finally finish this up. Well, at least that's the plan; we'll see how far I come this time.

Here's where I left off two years ago …

And here's where I am right now. Concentrating on finishing the runabout first and then the characters …
