Spoilers Marvel's Echo on Disney+

^ I have never sweated small stuff like what's in the spoiler box. Star Wars has spoiled us with their dedication to recreating things down to the precise details, but that's not something that I realistically expect from every production that draws on its past, especially as a franchise grows ever larger.

I agree; storytelling is always subjective.

Agreed with both of you regards to the small changes from Daredevil. Hell, my crappy memory thought it was exact. Good enough for me.

...of course, I'm about to do a rewatch of Daredevil soon but the point remains.

Binged the entire thing, it was good.

However there were several scenes with only sign language that didn't have subtitles attached to them, I don't know if that was intentional or an issue with Disney+ Canada. Not every scene with only sign language, but it was quite a few.

I've only watched the first two episodes so far, and they were fantastic.
Alaqua Cox has been great so far, and so has the rest of the cast. In general the casting has always been one of the best parts of the MCU and this show continues the trend. I'm really liking Maya's family a lot.
I was a little surprised by the supernatural element in the series, I was expecting it to stay more grounded. I do like the way the her Choktaw heritage though.
The Daredevil cameo in episode one was nice, a fun chance to see the character again, but didn't make huge deal out him being there.

hmm, I watched with subtitles and didn't notice anything but I wasn't looking specifically so something might've slipped by

I thought it odd when the songs were subtitled in Choctaw instead of or at least supplemented with an English translation

The actor who played 'Vickey' played Nathaniel Malick in Agents of SHIELD Season 7

He was also the unnamed Lambda Shuttle Co-Pilot that got shot by Cara Dune in Mando Season 2

I think that was a glitch, all the scenes with sign-language were subtitled for me. Even a few where you couldn't see that the person was signing, but I guess they stuck with the format to make it clear that Maya knew what they were saying.

I thought it was really good. I've heard a little aspersions about this being Disney+'s first binge-release Marvel show, that it shows a lack of confidence in it or something, but I feel like the short total run-time, restrained scope, and strong serialization combined with the first episode being far and away the weakest of the lot and not a clear preview of the overall show meant that releasing it all at once was the best move to get a positive reception, and I hate the binge-model. I genuinely don't think a lot of people would've come back after sitting with the first episode on its own for a week, maybe not even a day. I'm a little worried there'll be a drop-off regardless, though hopefully strong word-of-mouth will encourage people to stick with it.

Though I do have to acknowledge that I still hate MCU Fisk as a character. Not, like, in the fun, love-to-hate-him way, I just think his whole idiom of killing everyone around him at the drop of a hat and with little explanation or warning while offering no other skills as a criminal or leader makes it absurd that he could be any kind of "kingpin," and it just makes me angry that I have to take him seriously, enough so that I tuned out of the Netflix shows after Daredevil season 1. Who works for a guy like that? Who works with a guy like that? Who grudgingly accepts a guy like that in a world that runs on violence and retribution? I can't buy that he been shunned or shot in essentially every moment of his life. The way he operates, everyone in New York should be hunting him down the way Maya did. Not every criminal, every person has probably had some affection for at least one person Fisk bashed to death with his bare hands, probably two or three, the way he goes through ASL interpreters and impatient ice-cream vendors.

Maybe the turn towards politics will help with that, being the figurehead of a movement instead of just a walking cloud of anthrax would make it at least a little plausible people would feel a need to attach themselves to him despite it being literally suicidal. Likewise, him (appearing to be) a small-timer in Hawkeye made a lot more sense than going back to him being a multi-millionaire with a finger in every pie in Echo.

I didn't have any issues with subtitles.

...except when I went back to review a scene in the fifth episode for my review and somehow the language switched to German! And I couldn't get it to go back to English. Very odd.

I recognized him but I couldn't figure out who it was until I looked him up on IMDb. Completely different look which is why I struggled to place him.

The inclusion and incorporation of Choktaw legend and culture made for a unique MCU experience, giving Maya a powerset that is unique in the MCU. Her comics power is essentially the same as Taskmaster, whom we have already seen in the MCU. I imagine that duplicate powersets are something that Marvel Studios would want to avoid, as much as they can.

I haven't seen Echo so I won't comment on if changing her powers ended up working out or not, but I'll say that the MCU Taskmaster was basically a name only version, which took no advantage of the concept of copying other peoples fighting styles and barely got any screen time anyway. Unless we end up getting the real Taskmaster later down the line they might as well have just kept Echo's powers the same. Most non-comic reading MCU fans probably don't even remember the MCU Taskmaster, or if they do they probably don't remember her as anything but a slightly more powerful minion that Black Widow fought.

Actually, thinking about it, the MCU Taskmaster is a lot like the Wolverine Origins Deadpool. Both are based on unique, memorable, mouthy comic characters that are turned into boring, mute science experiments in the movies they appear in.

In regards to Fisk did he have any real injury? He didn't lose an eye right? Or was that an artificial one? Getting shot in the face ain't what it used to be. There seemed to be a slight reset in the relationship between himself and Maya. It had reached it's conclusion in Hawkeye but they dial it back here. I thought he used more sign language in 'Hawkeye' too. In general, Fisk seems more his netflix self in this compared to the comic book version we saw in Hawkeye.

the patch he had over has eye glowed a bit when he removed it. I assumed it was some sort of healing device. There also appeared to be some tech in the bandages

From context clues (mostly the shot of the IV drip) I'm guessing he's only been up and about relatively recently, and that eyepatch thing is Wakandan healing tech (because if anyone can get their hands on something like that, it's Kingpin!) So I'm guessing he's spent the last 5 months recovering, getting his eye tissue regenerated (assuming it's not bionic.)

The tech was to interpret the sign language and translate into audio.

The translation all seemed to be in Maya's contact lens and Fisk's earpiece (it's a tiny one, but you can see it in there). The patch must have been either some kind of healing device, or maybe a charger for an electronic prothetic eye.

The contacts read his lips and displayed the virtual hands. But Fisk needed some sort of receiver that could interpret Maya's sign language, too. So having a camera and processor in teh eyepatch makes the most sense. Maya didn't look at her own hands when talking to him.
And Fisk took the eye patch off when done talking to her.

I'm in ep4 by now. I've generally enjoyed it. I know they changed her powers so I was skeptical but this show is way better than Hawkeye when it comes to low stakes. Way better. Also the intros of each episode are cool. I do feel the family drama could be a bit more expanded on. But seeing Fisk just "show up" was hilarious. Not a very humorous show otherwise but most of the jokes are on point
