Marvel Studios may be planning more MCU for the small screen

Isn't it just as limiting a thought process to say they should get an Asian guy to play the mystical martial artist? Everything seems to come down to ticking boxes and keeping tallies these days.

I already addressed that. No, not all Asians are martial artists, but the martial arts did originate in Asia, and martial arts cinema is an art form that's important and popular in Asia. So having a white guy be better at martial arts than any Asian is a problematical notion.

Not to mention that we've already had a ton of white martial artists in American media, such as David Carradine, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Steven Seagal. Relatively fewer Asian martial-artist actors have become stars in the US -- Bruce Lee (who was beaten out by Carradine in yellowface for the lead in Kung Fu), Jackie Chan, maybe Michelle Yeoh for a few years. There's still a way to go to balance the scales.

Besides, we're not saying "get an Asian guy," we're saying "get an Asian-American guy." I.e. either someone who's biracial or someone who's an ethnically Asian native of the United States. If you want Iron Fist to be a character who bridges East and West, it's appropriate if the actor does so as well.
How many live action US action series have there been with an Asian male lead? The only two that immediately come to mind for me are Martial Law which starred Sammo Hung and Kelly Hu, and Into the Badlands starring Daniel Wu .

Well, there was also Vanishing Son and Mortal Kombat: Conquest. (EDIT: maybe The Crow series with Mark Dacascos? ) And since Asians are 5% of the US population that means that is equal to 80 action series starring white guys.

BUT, that's ridiculous right? That's my problem with trying to "balance the scales". Have we had more hispanic super heroes than blacks? Better cast accordingly in the next one.

I think the relevant thing is not to have a narrative that ends up appropriating Asian culture for white people.

Here's an interesting essay from Comic Book Resources' Albert Ching offering an Asian-American's perspective on why Iron Fist should not be Asian-American, and it's made me reconsider my position. It does basically come down to the viewpoint that having Marvel's first major Asian-American hero in a starring role (thus not counting Quake) be a martial arts-based character is too stereotyped. He also points out that some of the later comics have done interesting things with deconstructing the stereotype and appropriation of the original premise, so maybe seeing that represented onscreen would be worthwhile.

Maybe what this show needed was an Asian-American showrunner rather than lead actor, but that ship has sailed.

I'm pulling for neither east Asian nor White. How about Native American? or south Asian/Indian? or Persian? or Polynesian? Arab? Hispanic?

I'm a bit tired of Hollywood box checking at this point.

I'm all for an Asian American lead...just make a Shang-Chi show or movie.
Give me a show about Amadeus Cho, sans Hulk.

It isn't box ticking. It is questioning the assumption that just because someone 40 years ago thought it could be cool to make a blond-haired blue eyed Kung-Fu master, that the character has to remain so in all future forms. His class and culture and experiences define his character, not the color of his skin or hair.

SHIELD ID means that you can live almost anywhere in the world legally without giving a toss about citizenship?

Howard the Duck is a master of Quack-Fu, but I don't remember anyone saying that he was too white when his movie came out.

Y'all know that Misty Knight is "supposed" to end up with Iron Fist, right?

Although, I don't think black-girlfriend trumps white-saviour, and really, it may even make his white saviour bit a little worse?

Jimmy Woo hasn't been seen in Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. yet.

I'm actually kind of shocked we haven't gotten Amadeus Cho in the MCU, he seems to be a pretty big character in the comics.

Is he?

Pak was in love with his own creation, and rode him hard.

Other than that, there's only been a few minor flare ups elsewhere in the MCU.

Just because he's been written very well by one author, on and off for a decade, doesn't mean that he's the new Rick Jones.

Where the #### is Rick Jones?

In Peter David's novelization of The Incredible Hulk, the kid at the university that he bribed with a slice of pizza was Amadeus Cho.

Not surprised to hear that. I was under the impression that was already the case after AoU. From what I've read he didn't have a very good experience working on AoU, so I'm not surprised he's completely stepping away from Marvel. As long as they've got people like James Gunn and the Russos around I'm not concerned.

Err, does that just mean the movies? What about Agents of SHIELD? Granted, he hasn't been directly overseeing that show for a long time, because his focus on the movies left him no time for it, but does he intend to remain uninvolved with it?
