Marvel Studios may be planning more MCU for the small screen

Cool. I wonder if they were just waiting to get Jessica Jones out there before making a bunch of Iron Fist announcements. I'm sure Marvel and Netflix would much rather have everyone talking about a show currently available rather than a show that's not even in production yet.

I'm just anxious to find out who they're going to cast as Danny Rand. Given his friendship with Luke Cage I was hoping he might show up in Luke's series, but that's already well into production IIRC, so unless Danny's going to cameo in the last episode or something, I don't think we're going to see him there.

This is the logline that was released along with the announcement of Buck's hiring:
Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.
To me, this implies that Danny has only just recently returned to New York. I wonder if they're going to structure the show similar to how Arrow did, with the main plot unfolding in the present, interrupted occasionally by flashbacks to Danny's time in K'un Lun.

They could just make them straight up aliens who only pretend to be Asian when the city is on our plane of existence, and nothing says he needs to be white.

Yes, I read a quote somewhere from a Marvel person confiming that that was exactly their reason for holding off on Iron Fist news.

Sure. Danny just has to be American, and Americans come in all ethnicities.

I still think it would be cool if they cast an Asian American to play Danny. I definitely agree that the "white savior" aspect behind the comic book character's origin is distasteful.

Yeah. I saw a comment the other day that they'd be in trouble both ways, because casting an Asian-American actor would play into the stereotype of Asians being martial artists. But I think it's more important to avoid the cliche of white appropriation of Asian culture. After all, it's more than just martial arts that Iron Fist is connected to, isn't it? It's a whole culture and heritage and the like.

Besides, after Doctor Strange cast Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, divorcing that part of Marvel mysticism from its specifically Eastern roots, it would probably be only fair to go in the other direction this time and have an ethnically Asian hero connected to Asian mysticism. (Especially since Daredevil has already featured a Chinese character who's probably connected to it all.)

I'm glad to finally get some solid news on Iron Fist. I was wondering about the racial stuff too. My only familiarity with the character is from his appearance on Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Is there anything in his comic book backstory that would require him to be white?

Not really. His father, Wendell Rand, was a self-made wealthy entrepreneur, and his mother, Heather, was a socialite.

Well Danny is "originally" from an era when White saviours crawled the earth Exploring lands unknown to everyone but the people already living there.

Incorporating the timeshift from the 1930s... When did they start doing that in the comics, hey? Shouldn't Danny and Steve Rogers got along better?

(My knowledge on this is vague, and google is not helping.)

Cast a Eurasian. If we can have a Eurasian Superman, we can certainly have a Eurasian Iron Fist.

Isn't it just as limiting a thought process to say they should get an Asian guy to play the mystical martial artist? Everything seems to come down to ticking boxes and keeping tallies these days.

I already addressed that. No, not all Asians are martial artists, but the martial arts did originate in Asia, and martial arts cinema is an art form that's important and popular in Asia. So having a white guy be better at martial arts than any Asian is a problematical notion.

Not to mention that we've already had a ton of white martial artists in American media, such as David Carradine, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Steven Seagal. Relatively fewer Asian martial-artist actors have become stars in the US -- Bruce Lee (who was beaten out by Carradine in yellowface for the lead in Kung Fu), Jackie Chan, maybe Michelle Yeoh for a few years. There's still a way to go to balance the scales.

Besides, we're not saying "get an Asian guy," we're saying "get an Asian-American guy." I.e. either someone who's biracial or someone who's an ethnically Asian native of the United States. If you want Iron Fist to be a character who bridges East and West, it's appropriate if the actor does so as well.

I'm not quite sure where the idea of Danny being a "white savior" comes from, the people of K'un-L'un aren't Asian.
