What grade would you give the Marvel Cinematic Universe? (Ever-Changing Question)

I don't recall anyone complaining about the Male Silver Surfer being a silver naked man in the FF movie he appeared in.
Based on my experience watching Ozark, a silver naked Julia Garner could sell more than a few tickets.

That being said, while I'm sure she can play other parts, I'm not sure I'm ready for a Surfer, male or female, who sounds like a foul-mouthed hillbilly drug dealer.

Isn't one of the persistent rumours about the movie that it takes place in a different reality from the main MCU universe, which gets destroyed at the end by an Incursion?

I think it's a mistake if they are using Galactus in the first Fantastic Four film. Galactus is a villain for a second film or maybe even a third film. He's the ultimate threat, once the team has been established. Not using him or the Silver Surfer until the second film was something Fox actually got right, which of course meant nothing once they decided to make the character a freakin cloud. If Marvel is using Galactus and the Surfer for the first film then it is a complete panic move on their part.

I've been a fan of Julia Garner since The Americans. She is consistently good in whatever she is in. But I find it puzzling that Marvel is going with the most obscure version of the Silver Surfer imaginable. This isn't like going with the John Stewart version of the Green Lantern. I've read comic books for a long time and I never even heard of this version of The Silver Surfer until today.

If that skyline is supposed to be representative of what New York City will look like in the FF movie, then this is 100% an alternate universe and this probably is not the main MCU Silver Surfer or Galactus.

It looks like the present-day as imagined back in the 1960s. So maybe not literally a 1960s setting but something retro-futuristic.

And this is a bit odd. So Disney doesn't own the movie rights but do own the studio that owns them?

Might make me an awful person I guess but I think I'd prefer more of the classic Surfer myself. If not, it seems like Nova would fit the bill. I suppose the multiverse shenanigans might explain it all and make more sense of it so we'll see.

It doesn't matter what the character's name is, since they can amalgamate her with elements of other versions of the character. In Batman: The Animated Series, their Dick Grayson had Tim Drake's costume and computer skills, and their Tim Drake basically had Jason Todd's backstory. Both The Flash TV series have amalgamated Barry Allen with elements of Wally West's Flash, like his need to eat heavily to maintain his powers and his association with STAR Labs (and Tina McGee in the first series). And there have certainly been characters in the MCU who were amalgams of different characters' traits, though the only one I can think of offhand is Xu Wenwu, who was a blend of elements of the Mandarin and Fu Manchu.

So there's no reason the MCU's Shalla-Bal can't have the same backstory and character traits as the comics' Norrin Radd; it's just a matter of inverting the couple and their roles in the story.

Did anyone watch the Fantastic Four cartoon from the 80s or 90s? I always wondered why they had a robot instead of Johnny Storm as the fourth member. Was it because they couldn't show a man on fire?

I think that was the reason. And it dates to the late 70s the New Fantastic Four cartoon. Reading the wiki entry it seems the real reason was The Human Torch had been opted for a solo film.

Good to see another fan of The Americans in these parts. Garner deserved all of the accolades she got for Ozark but she was riveting in The Americans before such recognition.

Regardless the sensibility of bringing I Galactus this early on, I'm just happy to see Garner involved.

Marvel put up a new poster of the Human Torch on their twitter.

Oh, that's a very cool catch. Now I'm all the more curious about this film if it does exist in alternate universe

It wasn't a solo film, it was a TV series premise, part of the same deal where Marvel licensed the Hulk, Captain America, and Doctor Strange to Universal. It had nothing to do with fire; the character simply wasn't available. Details here: http://goodcomics.blogspot.com/2005/09/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed-16.html

Shalla Bal was the Silver Surfer in Earth X
Shalla Bal of Earth 9997 was. She became one alongside the original Surfer for Franklin Richards of Earth 9997, when he was Galactus.
I only looked at the 616 version on the Marvel Wiki, so that would explain why I didn't see those versions.
Looking at the comic depiction of the female Silver Surfer...wouldn't they have to put Julia Garner into a bodysuit ala Mystique? So basically skin-tight, just with no nips showing?

Seems like that would be hard to get away with in a PG-13 movie.
I'd say there's a decent chance they'll probably go the motion capture route again, so all they need to do is just give her a Barbie doll style anatomy and they'll be fine. Or if they go with a live action version, they'll probably just use a body suit or something that is thick enough you can't see to much.

Disney owns 20th Century Studios, so it doesn't really matter, it's still Disney in the end.
