This is going to go down well with the usual suspects...

I wonder if it was timed specifically to annoy loosing, loser who lost Nelson "Why do we need women or black people in Marvel movies?" Peltz?

I really hope the Surfer plays only a small part in the movie, setting up Galactus for a sequel, and is not the main antagonist.

I'd rather the FF movie start small, rather than a have a big event, because where do you go after Galactus?

I wasn't very familiar with the Shalla-Bal, so I looked her up and according to the Marvel wiki, she never was Silver Surfer, despite what the article says, she was just his pre-tranformation love interest.
It doesn't bother though, I'm curious how they're handle her. Is she just gonna be female version of Norrin Rad or are they goona take her in a different direction?
Not familiar with the actress, but I trust Marvel.
There is a difference between movies not being good or even outright bad, and not liking them.
There are many movies that 'don't work' for me, but I can definitely tell they are very well made movies.
The Shinning was like that for me, I could tell objectively that it was a very well made movie, I just wasn't enjoying it.
Same with Close Encounters -- the story is mindless and dumb and celebrates a man abandoning his family because of an irrational cultish obsession, but it's fantastically well-made.
Steven Spielberg has admitted that he regrets having Richard Dreyfus's character leave his family, and if he remade the movie now, that wouldn't happen.

He didn't abandon his family. He's just getting some milk... Of course it may some of that green milk Luke drinks so he gonna be gone for a minute :D

I recognized the name as Norrin Rad's love interest, but I wouldn't have been surprised if she'd ended up being the Surfer herself at some point, since such things have happened before (e.g. Jane Foster becoming Thor, or Carol Danvers becoming Captain Marvel eventually after various other identities).

Fantastic news if true. I've been a big fan of Julia Garner since her role in The Americans, pre-Ozark fame.

Showing just how out of touch I am with modern comics, I didn't even know about a female Silver Surfer until just now. But then I didn't know there was a version of Frank Castle who became a Ghost Rider and herald of Galactus until the character appeared in the Marvel Contest of Champions game, so what do I know?

That said...

Why keep focusing on who will be upset by so and so news instead of just focusing on letting those of us here enjoy the news.

Yeah, I know the answer but I still have to call it out.

I'm just not enthused about Silver Surfer's appearance being significant enough already to announce such an (apparently?) big casting.

Is this Marvel's plan to introduce the non-Kang Big Bad?

Casting announcements rarely give any sense of the size of a character's role in the film. For all we know, the Surfer will only show up in the mid-credit scene at the end to set up the sequel. If anything, that seems likely to me given how the MCU tends to do things.

Expect they didn't announce people like Harry Syles, Patton Oswalt, or Brett Goldstein for their respective mid-credits scenes. Styles was leaked, maybe Goldstein, but Oswalt (at least for me) was a complete shock. No way Garner's role is the same.

Now, she might be brought in as part of the plot that does herald Galactus' arrival but perhaps isn't the main focus.

Granted her casting isn't officially but this far too early to be anything less than at least a supporting role.

The Silver Surfer's origin / 1st appearance in the FF comic was, of course, tied to Galactus, and acknowledging the MCU rarely introduces characters and plots without it being a tease for another story--would suggest the Surfer's casting is setting up Galactus' arrival, either in a FF sequel (if that happens), or teased Thanos-style in other films.

Looking at the comic depiction of the female Silver Surfer...wouldn't they have to put Julia Garner into a bodysuit ala Mystique? So basically skin-tight, just with no nips showing?

Seems like that would be hard to get away with in a PG-13 movie.

but those x-men movies were PG-13...

I think Mystique's texture made her feel a tiny bit more clothed? Not to mention Mystique can shape shift, and when Jennifer Lawrence played her, she actually just shifted to Jennifer Lawrence wearing clothes.

If we see femsurfer in action, I don't see how we're not going to see a silver ass crack going by. I don't think we saw Mystique's butt once across all of the movies, though I could be wrong.

I don't see why. Plenty of movies and TV shows at that rating or lower get away with showing pseudo-nudity as long as they avoid depicting nipples or genitalia. Heck, magical-girl anime like Sailor Moon does it weekly, and that's for kids.
