Well, congrats to the Yankees and their fans.

Here's hoping it's at least another nine years before their next title. No offense. :p

I wonder where Bob Sheppard is now. He would be thrilled to see this. I hope he's doing all right. (He has not retired, as of yet; he just wasn't well enough to announce)

An interesting stat I heard today: in the postseason, there have been 36 games pitched by pitchers going on 3 days rest. Of those 36, only 12 have been won by said pitchers.

Yankees gambled and it paid off.

I wish I could say I'm angry, embarrassed, or disappointed, but really I'm just sad. I'm sad that the Yankees proved you can outspend everyone and still win. I'm sad that the little breaks we could have had early in this series didn't go our way. Mostly I'm just sad that Shane had to get the final out. Nobody wanted it more and he kept fouling pitches away, but it had to end eventually.

Phillies proved they were a great team by winning last year and making it back this year. Things weren't clicking in the end and some things weren't clicking all year. I feel if they had been, it would have been a different result, but it's not to be.

Here we go, Yanks...let's do this! :techman:

I love it. Good three innings so far - sad to see Damon out. I got Bud Light and peanuts on the go and the wife is wearing her Jeter home jersey. I wish the Jays were here, of course, but what the hell. This game is great. Be back on tomorrow to see what everyone has to say.

A Blue Jays fan rooting for the Yanks?:wtf:

Huh...

What can I say....yep, I'm a Jays fan, the wife is a Yankees fan, and my daughter is a Bosox fan - you outta see it in this house sometimes!! Frankly, I was just glad to be watching ball. Period. There is no more ball on TV for me now 'til next year. Just before turning off the computer last night, I did email Cogeco (our cable company) asking them to put MLB TV on the lineup. Not holding my breath though. For now, Its rebuild time!!

congradulations to the 27 time world champion new york yankees. the greatest franchise in baseball history!:techman::techman::techman:

Andy Pettite is now the answer to a kinda cool trivia question.

Q: Who is the only player to start and win the clinching game in all three rounds of the MLB post-season?

(thanks to Mike & Mike)

A-Rod out until May to have hip surgery to get his steroid-tumor removed. Conflicts me, as while I'm thrilled as a Sox fan, it hurts me in Fantasy Baseball, and destroys my dreams of having the top 2 picks in the draft for the 2nd year in a row :p

Steroids don't cause tumors.:techman:

Just put in a preorder for the '09 series on DVD. :techman:

(it comes out December 15 if anyone's interested. So does the highlight film)

I gotta give props to the Phillies. They made the Yankees fight for every inch of this. Both teams fought and played WELL. Salute! :)

Oh, and...

:D

They were never IN game 6. It was like they expended all their energy in Philly and came in deflated. They fought hard in the other games though, but in the in end, the Yankees out muscled, and out-persisted them.

I'm definitely glad the Yanks won this at home. It wouldn't have been at all the same if this had happened in Philly.

Also, I think it's really cool that MLB is donating the unused championship gear to needy folk. linky

Utter nonsense. They outspent everyone for 8 years and didn't win till now(not to mention for 17 years till 1995). Aren't you pissed OFF the PHILLIES OUTSPENT 25 OTHER MLB teams?? You have to have chemistry and good big game pitching to win! Pettitte is from the Yankee farm system. Cano, Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Cabrera, Joba Chamberlain are all from the farm system!!

I'm off to Tom's River today to get my Yankees championship gear!

It's sad that the Yanks may lose Hit-deki to free agency, I hope they can at least keep Damon. (The dash to 3rd base...one of the greatest WS plays ever :D )

I'll be happy when baseball has a real salary cap like most other sports. And that day will come.

Sorry to tell you, its not just money its organization....Basketball has a salary cap...who wins? The bigger market teams still do: Boston, Lakers, Dallas, San Antonio, etc. Football, teams that spend the most under the salary cap: NE Patriots, Pittsburgh, NY Giants!

So, who thought that Hit-deki would make MVP? :)

Not till last night!! .615 is sick! Its only .010 points off of Babe Ruth's Yankee record! 3 HRs and 8 RBIs in 3 full games!

This was a perfect way to christen the new stadium. As one of the many banners said last night: "NOW it's home." :techman:

(AFAIK, only three teams opened a new stadium with a WS win: Yankees in 1923 and 2009, Red Sox in 1912, Cardinals in 2006)

Wonder if Girardi will take jersey #28 next year? :D

Red Sox...how ironic.

^ Hey, I gotta give the Sox credit, Fenway is cool - just a fucking nightmare trying to get onto the subway afterward.

So, how long is this thread gonna last? Don't close it too quickly, mods...let us have our Yankee fun. :)

The Yankees spent 420 million on three people. The Phillies signed pretty much one guy in the off season - Raul Ibanez. The Yankees went after the best free agent pitcher, the best free agent first baseman, and another really good free agent pitcher. They started winning because arguably the best player in baseball started hitting in the post season. They also spent their money more wisely, instead of on overrated players like Giambi, Sheffield, and Abreu.

Jeter played very well (should've been MVP, imo). He's from their farm system and from the teams that were actually built from the ground up instead of imported like they do now. Posada didn't even play two of the games because he wasn't as effective with one of their mercenary pitchers, so he's a poor example to use. Cano and Cabrera filled their roles, but that's all you can really say about them. Compare that to Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, and Jayson Werth. The Yankees production was not from their farm system.

I have no problem with a big market team spending in the market. I have a problem when a team can outspend all others and get any player they want. No other team could get CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Mark Teixiera and that's the reason they won.

But it is the system that's currently set up. While I don't count myself among Yankee fandom, it's hard for me to blame them very much when they are working within the same rules everyone else is.
