Major League Baseball 2009

I was a little off on that 48 hours thing. Phillies trade for Cliff Lee. They apparently keep their two best prospects and Happ, so they aren't breaking the bank to get him.

And that puts the final dagger in the Mets season. Bring on the pigskin!

Definitely a good move by the Phillies today. Getting both Cliff Lee and Ben Fransisco for prospects is a good move. As a Tigers fan, I've seen quite a bit of these guys over the years, and both players impressed me.

It also helps that from now on the Tigers will not have to worry about facing Lee. ;)

The Braves vs. Bill Hohn is going to be all over the news tonight. Sigh...

Update:

Bill Hohn ejected Bobby Cox in the 8th. He actually walked over to the dugout and stared, which caused Bobby to come out. He told Hohn to go back and call the game, so Hohn pulled the line up card out for some reason.

Then, McCann got ejected.

At the end of the game, Hohn fist bumped the Marlins catcher. WTF.

Another ugly night of pitching for the Red Sox, though it didn't help that the 'pen got depleted last night thanks to Papelbon's implosion. Still plenty of season left with the AL East lead reachable and holding a current lead on the wild card.

The Tigers downed the Rangers tonight, and the Twins clipped the White Sox. That gives the Tigers a little more breathing room. I'd rather see the Twins and White Sox battle for second place than either of them make a run at the Tigers.

New York Times is reporting that both Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003.

I win. ;)

Then again, your "evidence" for that was trying to use his declining stats in 07 and 08, when he put up career numbers in 06, when they were clearly testing, so...

And honestly, not many names on that list that could shock me. Someone like Jeter, maybe, but other than that, pretty much everyone is suspect in some way.

If they are going to keep leaking bits of this, though, they need to release the whole thing. Get all the names out there. What they tested positive for, as well. A generic "PED" term is too loose, and covers too much.

It would change things (in my mind, at least) depending on what they took. Given how outspoken Ortiz has been about this, it's kinda suprising. Then again, if he was on this list for a banned supplement instead of, say, anabolic steroids, his comments would make more sense.

Similar to JC Romero, who was banned for PEDs, but because of an ingredient in a bottle of supplements he bought from GNC. He was banned for taking PEDs, but it wasn't steroids.

Just food for thought, I guess. We won't really know until everything comes out. Not much would be a shock at this point, though, so not sure how many people can start up on the self-righteous material at this point, because you can almost guarantee that members of every team are on this list.

I'm the furthest thing from a Red Sox fan, but even I couldn't give two shits about this latest 'development'. It was 6 years ago - why don't we all just get down off the cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and GET OVER IT.

Seriously. It seems that every big name was using some form of PED back then. Until we know more, let's get back to the hitting and the running and the fielding.

On that note, Sox end their homestand with a much-needed win, aided largely by a three-run Big Papi shot.

a clean home run shot, one presumes... ;)
I dunno...did anyone see him wearing a ski mask and buying a ginkgo biloba supplement at Whole Foods? ;)

EDIT: And the Yankees lose, so the Sox gain a game and maintain their wild card lead. :techman:

The Ortiz news saddens me, but it's not like it was surprising.

I hope it's overshadowed by a Roy Halladay or Adrian Gonzalez acquisition.

Plus, the news, as disappointing as it is (if true), has no bearing on 2004 or 2007.

During the Yanks/ChiSox game, MLB Network was running a quote from Papi on the screen crawl...he said something like "I was surprised to learn I tested positive for anything". For some reason that sounded really funny. (This is not an insult, BTW.)
