And they're about to make another big trade to get a bat.

Oh yeah, because the Ryan Church trade immediately makes them the team to beat.

The NL East is a rotten division this year. If the Phillies were healthy and consistent, they'd be 10 games up on the rest of the mess in that division.

My new avatar sums up my feelings about the Mets this year.

That was a New York Post headline a few years ago. It still fits. :(

^ I'm gonna steal that and use it on the engineering board I'm an admin on, provided it's ok with you.

I'm not talking about Ryan Church. That was just a way to get rid of Francoeur in any way possible. He's one of the worst qualified players in the league when it comes to getting on base.

Can't I root for my team? Just because you hate the Braves doesn't mean you have to hate me.

Phillies sign Pedro Martinez and promptly put him on the DL. I think he's worth a sign, provided they don't actually expect him to do much.

So the guy the guy gets to redesign the TOS Enterprise, AND play in the MLB?

Talented dude.

But ya, that trade was trading meh...for meh, and seeing if a change of scenery could help them.

And Pedro to the Phillies. Im mixed about this. As someone who lives in Philly, it will be great to see him pitch again, and I hope I get to a few games. However, as a Red Sox fan, seeing Pedro in another uniform ( I never even got used to the Mets one, or hell a Dodgers or Expos one) is just sickening. The man was, and always will be a Boston Red Sox.

The Second Half, or what I like to call "if you didn't believe the games counted before the break, you better believe they count now." Looking forward to what happens at the trade deadline and if the Giants can pull something out. I would say 2 months ago it was mandatory they got a bat. Now while it's still a concern, if they stay pat I might not be as bothered by it. Molina is going to get hot sometime this year, and Panda is going to cool down but still be a threat. Hopefully the All Star game didn't ruin Lincecum (Which might be silly but watching him pitch I got worried), and Cain is fine and Sanchez' trade value skyrocketed with the no hitter. Things are going to be very interesting in San Francisco.

Hey, even I agree that he's a Red Sox player and always will be. As a Phillies fan, I'm hoping he can pitch well here, but, even if he has nothing left, anything he does now won't diminish his great career in Boston.

As a Red Sox fan I don't give a rats ass what Pedro does on or off the field.

Plus it's not like we will ever see him in uniform anyways, they will be lucky if he ptches 5 games.

Is it just me or have umpires seemed to have gotten lazy when it comes to making calls on stolen bases? I just watched yet another blown call - ball got there first, but Shane quite obviously beat the tag.

I haven't noticed anything league wide. I just chalk it up to the quirkiness of officiating in baseball. A lot of things like that would be taken care of with instant replay, but I suppose part of baseball's charm is that so much is in the hands of people rather than cameras.

btw- did anyone see the Ted Williams doc. on HBO last night? Fascinating stuff on the greatest hitter ever.

ps- I get to be in one of the suites on Sunday when the Twins come in to play the Rangers. I'll take some pics. They always feed you pretty well in those suites, so it should be a lot of fun.

I'm not calling for instant replay or anything, but when it's your job to get that call right and you miss it that badly I get angry. Ha.

I saw that exact thing you're talking about and he was clearly safe. I think they are.

^Well the MLB has been, supposedly, better at catching these kinds of inconsistencies with regards to their umps, but I agree it's aggravating when umps mess up, especially when it's against my team. :)

Ya. I just remember him pitching in the 99 All Star Game, where he struck out Larry Walker, Sosa, McGuire, and someone else (brain fart). He just totally fooled with them. Watching him blow a 97 MPH heater by someone, and then just pull the string with an 81 MPH change was just beauty in motion.

Jimmy just tried to steal - he was out by a mile. No make-up call. :(
