Luther Series 2

What's this nonsense about "2 specials" instead of a proper series? Several people have mentioned this, but where are they getting it from? Regardless, it's wrong, as ep 2 ended with a preview of next week's episode. Which is a relief.

No, they are not wrong. These episodes were written as two 2 hour specials as opposed to a "full" 6 or 8 hour series.

So we'll be getting 4 episodes and that's it.

Well it might not be it depending on whether the Beeb commissions any more. They've spent a fortune on drama for all these marvellous shows we've been seeing. I don't suppose they can keep spending at that rate indefinitely.

Yeah that was very good.

Can someone please clue me in on who Alice is and why he sprung her?

You need to watch the first series to find out who Alice is. As for her getting out of the funny farm, she did that herself. Luther didn't help her.

No, she didn't do it on her own. He gave her a key card to get out. It was in the apple he tossed over the wall in the first episode of this series, right after he visited her.

Maybe, but with Idris Elba's film career on the up and up, and some pretty strong overtones suggested so far this series, I think this is going to be the last.

Idris Elba has said he will come back for more. It's a role he wants to return to.

Well I liked it, but given I hadn't seen the first series I did find a few things confusing. Who is Alice and why is he helping her escape from the secure unit when she's clearly an obsessed nutter?

It was interesting, and I've liked Elba since Ultraviolet, but hard to see what differentiates it from a.n.other crime drama...aside from the fact he seems to live in a squat or something?!

You REALLY have to see Season One, Luther had suffered from a major breakdown and to be honest was rather out of control until an incident involving his ex wife, Alice, his partner, an Armed Response Unit and a sawn-off shotgun!

Put in spoiler just in case anyone doesn't know :)

Alice Morgan went to Oxford University aged 13, a celebrated child genius. She completed her PhD in astrophysics at the age of 18. She met Luther after the murder of both of her parents, whom she was suspected but never proven to have killed. In Luther, she found a worthy foe and a great friend. Before, Alice had seen human existence as insignificant compared to the universe, with its vast galaxies and black holes. But when her philosophy came into direct conflict with Luther's belief system metamorphosed, discovering what it is to care for someone else. Still volatile at times, cold and unemotional at others, she is Luther's greatest ally, and greatest temptation.

Penultimate ep tonight. I have to say I'm more into this series than the first one. As to Elba's burgeoning film career: I've always thought he's perfect for the medium of TV. Judging from the career choices he has made, I think he feels the same way. Either way it's a pretty impressive list he has under his belt.

I think he's one of those actors who's end up doing a lot of film work but mainly in character roles, but then do a lot of TV work in more of a starring role.

My only quibble, and it's a small one, is that he doesn't get his shirt off like he did in The Wire. However that could be because he's gone back to good old British padding after all that zero body fat he had to maintain.

Me either. If the Beeb had shown it weekly I would have, but running it daily? I just didn't have the free time!
