Lt.Kyle

There probably would be a stronger claim to recasting Pike as an Asian (I'll play him!) than Kyle as at least most Asians have darker hair color to match Jeffrey Hunter's.

When was that? Does Roger Moore look any thing like Connery or Lazenby? Could Robin Curtis be mistaken for Kirsty Ally? Does Roger Davis look like Pete Duel? Are Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney triplets?
And in Her Majesty's Secret Service, the script had reminiscing scenes that implied Lazenby was in fact the same person (not character, the actual person) as Connery and was the one who lived through the past 8 or so years.:wtf:

Klingon Ambassador: And you call us barbarians? Why even the infamous James Kirk was almost killed in some bizarre primitive Vulcan deathmatch over who gets to date Spock's fiancee! Presided over by Vulcan elder T'Pau herself! This is the best the Federation has to offer? You demonize the Klingons while whitewashing your own skeletons!

McCoy: And I always end up being that skeleton, that's why I ended up being called Bones.

Gorn captain: You Klingons are complaining? I'm filing a complaint over the latest post that La'an Noonien Singh, an illegal augment, made about us Gorn on subspace chatter.
Klingon Ambassador: The egg thing?

Gorn: On no, that part's true.

As an Asian American I do not think they needed to consult us or the representatives that we apparently have. This is a non issue for me, who is Asian American and absolutely not the elected official of my "people".

The only reason I think it's weird or dumb is because it created an avenue to have this specific discussion.

^^ I don't think a reasonable person would have anticipated their "let's name our transporter chief after the one in TOS as a cute little nod to the old show" decision would lead to the unhinged rants in this thread.

Yeah, they should know the fanbase better than that.

Perhaps, but it all could have been avoided if they stopped pretending we are in the TOS timeline. A real reboot would have gone a long way here in terms of managing expectations, and reactions to changes.

Many fans state proudly that they avoid anything that is not "in the TOS timeline" - their loss - but you can't blame a new Trek series or movie for hedging its bets to appeal to both those who don't care about canon and prime timelines and those who do.

I have a cousin who has loudly avoided all Trek after "Encounter at Farpoint". I have several friends who walking away from Trek after TMP's gala premiere (seen by many fan reviewers of the day as "obviously an alternate universe"), and others who stormed off in anger over ST IV, which they called "the dumbing down of Star Trek for the masses".

Why not let viewers decide for themselves if they need to create a little personal head canon while they watch?

No, probably not. If TSFS were released today Trek fans would riot.

Huh? Wait until the original fans and cast of TOS are dead first? :)

Haha. No I doubt that would have happened in 2015-20. I'm still alive anyhow.... Bringing it back so soon in 2009 and now 13 years later it's still pretty much in the hands of the same guys as the Kelvin Movies. Well one of them anyways. Lol

I just feel Trek didnt get enough of a rest. The next time though it does go to sleep which will be sooner rather than later i should think..(bit over saturated right now)..we probably will all be near death or dead by the time of its next resurrection. Well probably not ?e. Since I'm all awesome and stuff...;)

Other than Kurtzman who do the two have in common?

Well the kelvin movies and DISCO/SNW have much in common. Aesthetics and they are prequels, Kelvin movies being alternate reality prequel. Recasting of legacy characters etc.
The more I think about it the more i wish we would have just got a continuation some time after Voyager or a complete true Reboot. Out of the 4 live action tv shows and 3 movies since ST.ENT. ALL but one have been prequels of a sort...with DISCO becoming a show set farther in the future...

I don't think their has been any unhinged rants. Those are reserved for the Youtube comment sections. To me this is just another daily and never ending continuity or canon porn discussion that is of course what being a Trekkie is all about. Rambling on about things that make common folk think you live in your parents basement is fandom at it's most basic essence.
