Lt.Kyle

This is always my question. What made it different in the past vs. now? Did fans become more aware of these violations and that impacts enjoyment? Are we less imaginative? Are we less flexible if something lacks the same entertainment value as before so we become more critical?

I don't have the answers but this is my perception that the past wasn't better but there was more willingness to be imaginative with it.

I feel like there is more violations in continuity than ever before. I realize some people do not feel it's any different.
I was a defender of Enterprise when it was first released. There was an outcry over it being a prequel and them having certain tech that fans did not think they should have had. The use of the Akira as a foundation for the NX-01. The Akria was never used on screen much before yet many has issues of them using it as a prequel ship. The very notion of a Starship Enterprise before NCC 1701. Them being exposed to cloaking and Holo deck type environments etc. But much of that was easily explained and not really violations. Also for some reason people thought the interior of the NX 01 looked more advanced than 1701. Which in fact it really did not. At least in function. The NX was very sterile looking. But in the end ENT stayed true to back story than DISCO has. I

Anyways this whole Kyle thing is different. (If it ends up being Kyle from TOS) The only other time I remember a character changing like this was Khan in the Kelvin Movies. Which was not received very well if I remember correctly....

I've always taken the Marvel approach.
If you want a character of a different race as a character, you create a new one.

Example: they wanted a new spiderman, instead of changing Peter Parker, the introduced Miles Morales. There, Afro/Latin spiderman, no fuss .

You want an Asian transporter chief, no problem, create one. Naming him Kyle is un necessary and just creates butt hurt for some fans. Not everybody on SNW needs to be from Tos. In fact I want as little as possible.

Probly some person in middle management or a non trek knowledgeable writer was given a list of tos names and didn't even think twice naming him Kyle.

The producers must have had some good reason. I suspect some imbalance in the cast was altered to better effect with the change in their opinion. Good enough for me. It had nothing to do with intentionally pissing off fans.

Well I think we know why they did it. They want a more diverse cast. Which is great... but its the execution which was odd. Most shows that do this change the character BEFORE it becomes live action and said character has not already been established in said continuity. Example. Robert April. He was only in the cartoon. Never in any of the live action material of the prime universe. So they could cast whomever they wanted.
Kyle is a bit odd. NOW this is IF it's the same Kyle. He may not be...as many pointed out...

We know the star trek universe is not real but for any story to be fun and make sense keeping canon as tight as possible is necessary. I don't think the kyle we are seeing is the same one but let's say it is. It would be a major canon violation and frankly stupid.

Do you like Space Seed even though Spock says a Eugenics War happened in the 1990's? Or Yesterday's Enterprise where they forget to give Geordi his Prime Universe uniform back at the end.? Kyle I think is small canon issue at best that people will find away to head canon his existence in a way that keeps the illusion that everything is in the same universe or will simply think of the show being set in another universe. People will like the show though on how much they like the main characters and stories.

I enjoyed Into Darkness until Cumberbatch said " I....AM...KHAN!" I sat there in the theater saying NO....YOU...ARE...NOT...The movie went downhill after that.

Having said that, Khan was an iconic character in the franchise where Kyle was really just a glorified extra.

Which is how I view current incarnations. They are easily explained and not really violations.

He would have been better as just John Harrison but I loved Cumberbatch in that film. He was Khan in those moments.

Sure he was an extra. I'm not gonna go down this road again though of asking if it's ok to change the race of all minor characters in Trek. I don't need people starting more crap with me with stupid accusations. I'm just surprised of everyone saying he was just an extra or whatever. And they dont care......YET here we are possibly seeing this character that no one cares about in this show. WHY?? if he is such a stupid non character why did they include him in the show??? Its puzzling to me.

No idea. Email the producers.

And ignore the race baiting trouble makers. I've been accused of the same thing for daring to suggest that James Bond should stay as he is written in the novels. You won't believe the lengths to which people go to try and justify changing what is clearly written in black and white by an author in order to satisfy their social agenda.

Fans seem torn between disliking the choice or not caring about it either way.
Indeed.
Huh?? If no one cares...why do they want it??? I must be missing something here.
It was a tongue in cheek comment because more often than not when a new show is announced the questions abound about "Will we see this character? What about that character? Where is this person?" and it runs the gamut of actual main characters, to minor characters.

Easter egg. Just like naming the navigator "Mitchell".
