NuTrek's big, controversial premises

Couldn't we spice things up and have a reboot of the TNG crew again?

Oh wait ... that's PIC.

As much as I hate the reboots, seeing the DS9 or ENT crew again would give me some hope.

Nah, that was a continuation.

DS9 and ENT crews played by new actors?
I'd rather see a continuation á la PIC (or god-willing more canon-respectful), but even with new actors at least it would be something different. Hell, I'd be happy if they could reproduce the vibes of DS9, which feels completely different from the other shows.

Picard definitely had some weird vibes, partially due to its pitch black lighting and an unusual amount of beheadings. DS9 strayed a bit from the typical Star Trek feel itself, but it found a nice tone to live in and I'd much rather the franchise headed over in that direction again.

I don't see the point of new actors though, when a lot of the appeal of the characters came from the performances. We don't get those characters back that way, we get caricatures or reimaginings as the actors play up the pop culture perception or decide to make their role their own. It makes sense to recast if you're doing something like using a much younger Rachel Garrett in your cool new spy thriller, but otherwise they should let the writers and actors create someone new in my opinion.

Not sure how doing the same thing is doing something different.

It's not.

It's comfort food viewing.
You're both right. I meant different in that its not another TOS reboot, but it would just be more comfort food viewing.

It feels like NuTrek is going for that comfort food viewing angle with all the reboots, but its not creating that comfort food for me at least (its not anything like what it attempts to emulate) and focusing on these older shows makes it stagnate and less appealing to new audiences. So its alienating both the old and the new audiences, leaving who exactly? (I know this isn't an original thought on here.)

A new ship with a new crew. No gimmick like being stuck in a far away location and trying to get home.

Just the basics. A Federation starship on a 5 year exploration mission.

Of course the powers that be cannot resist the use of legacy characters, a ship named Enterprise, etc. The majority of people simply will not watch otherwise, or so it seems.

They should do what the old shows did, and put the legacy characters in episode one. That'll be a draw for audiences and it'll tie the series to a certain place and time, but after they've done their job the new characters can take it from there.

That's the part I don't agree with. I don't think it's alienating everyone, but the segment that are willing to actually try is quite small. It has a mix that I personally enjoy but obviously an audience of one is hardly viable.

I think Star Trek is stuck in a middle ground, because people expect comfort food, when that was the last thing Star Trek was meant to be when it first aired. And I think getting away from the comfortable is actually going to make Star Trek more interesting.

If I want comfort food, that's what reruns are for. I watch through MASH, NIGHT COURT and TOS, as well as STAR TREK (09) at least once in a year. My wife rewatches LORD OF THE RINGS and BAD BATCH. We find the familiar comfortable while looking for the new (Rings of Power, Fallout, etc).
