Yeah. For the show to boldly go where no man has gone before, it has to risk upsetting the expectations.False dichotomy.

Yep. Innovate or die.Yeah. For the show to boldly go where no man has gone before, it has to risk upsetting the expectations.
I was kind of prepared to buy into what Meyer was saying until the announcement of the delay.
The reason stated for that has been to ensure a very high quality finished product.
They can't have it both ways though. We're either getting some earth shattering show with superb stories, scripts, acting and SFX, that has been lovingly crafted for as long as has been needed, or we need to "lower expectations"
Which one is it to be?
Well, I had the opposite experience with ENT.
Back in '01, I was totally stoked that we would have this exciting new show called Enterprise. It was going to be great!
Then I actually watched it, week after week. And it was an enormous, unspeakable letdown, from the sappy music to the sheer mediocrity of the stories and characters.
These days I rarely ever revisit that godawful show.

That's similar to my experience with the Kelvin Timeline. I was dismissive and aggressive about it and it's only in the last couple years that I rewatched them with an open mind and found I really enjoy them. Deciding how you feel about something without even giving it the opportunity to entertain you isn't fair to yourself or the creators. I'd rather allow myself to enjoy a thing than the satisfaction of patting myself on the back for being a "die hard purist" who can no longer enjoy anything.
Holy shit, all of this.I was in the room when he said this at the Mission New York Discovery panel and it got roaring applause from the audience. It was in response to a rather rude "question" from an audience member demanding they not "screw it up." I loved Meyer's response. Art is not produced by committee and they cannot please everyone. I loved when he said, "I wouldn't tell you a joke I didn't think is funny because I thought you would think it's funny. That's bullshit." Something to that effect.
Fans do not always know what is best. That is a fact. We all have ideas about what a show "should" be, but the show will be the story the showrunners want to tell. And we are free to tune out. But to think they should kowtow to every comment online in an attempt to appease people is just absurd, and that's basically what angry internet commenters are ultimately expecting creators to do. He's right. We need to get loose. Go in with an open mind and an open heart and experience the story they want to tell. And then decide if we like that story or not.

My expectations are good cg, prime uniforms and ships, and great storytelling more like TOS, in that it has a moral to the story and has great characterization. I also hope that there are no lens flares, iBridges, brewery engineering decks, and no pushy insubordinate officers.Being told to change expectations while prematurely blaming a fans "mindset" for upcoming disappointment does not give me a good vibe at all about this....
The title is rather misleading. He was speaking of unreasonably high expectations that are bound to lead to disappointment no matter how good the show is, not saying that fan expectations should be dropped to sub-par, lowest-common-denominator levels, which is what the title of the article implies.

You might want to prepare for some disappointment. I get the impression there's some major reimagining going on.My expectations are good cg, prime uniforms and ships, and great storytelling more like TOS, in that it has a moral to the story and has great characterization. Beat me to itYou might want to prepare for some disappointment. I get the impression there's some major reimagining going on.
1) Uniforms. They'll probably look less like the Primes than the Kelvins do. Might use the colors though, but not the ones from the Cage.
2) Ships. We've seen the hero ship and the reaction has been mixed. Again, it doesn't look like it's from the Cage or even TOS proper.
3) Storytelling. Well it's going to be arc based, with a single plot running through the entire season. Might even have several POV characters on different ships. So not like TOS.
4) Morals. Maybe
5) Great characterization. Hopefully.
6) Lens Flare, iBridge, brewery. Who can say. One of the guys from who okayed those is the man at the top.
7) Pushy insubordinate officers. The main character is the XO. I'm thinking there will be some push. Though it's not like our TOS heroes weren't pushy and insubordinate at times. They were down right mutinous on occasion.

I doubt Spock expected Kirk to die. There was a Starfleet outpost on the planet.I also hope the ship has a brig so that they don't have to shoot troublemakers out in one-man pods to crash and die on ice planets.

The ship has a brig. But sometimes a brig isn't quite enough. (See Mitchell, Gary, WNMHGB). Hmmmm. Coincidence?I also hope the ship has a brig so that they don't have to shoot troublemakers out in one-man pods to crash and die on ice planets.
Ooh, good point. Tere is a continuity precedent of Kirk marooning Mitchell on "Delta Vega" at a Starfleet facility/lithium cracking station. The ship has a brig. But sometimes a brig isn't quite enough. (See Mitchell, Gary, WNMHGB). Hmmmm. Coincidence?

Who knew that Kirk would learn that trick from Spock?![]()
