Hell, Orville was billed as a comedy and definitely marketed as such and yet had some deeper episodes within the first five episodes: "Pria" and "Krill."R&M has interesting and deep sci-fi stories and concepts, not just silly comedy stuff and burping.
Middle.
Ground.
Its there. Trek mostly found it for 35 years.
There might not be any laugh out loud hilarious moments, but I did chuckle a few times, like the MSD joke, the guy being naked in the shuttle cockpit, or the "calm down the phaser was, err, is on stun."The jokes don't seem funny in the slightest,
So it seems like with every new Trek show there’s a significant portion of the fan base totally against it initially, and based on almost nothing really.
People should give this an actual chance when it airs rather than judging it by, what, 60 seconds of spliced together scenes?
Yes, they should. But, they won't. Fans are all or nothing in their knee jerk reactivity. So it seems like with every new Trek show there’s a significant portion of the fan base totally against it initially, and based on almost nothing really.

It's a cartoon.
Discovery and Picard were too serious, now this isn't serious enough.

Its why fandom can be less fun. There is the sense of seriousness that belittles enjoyment. After all the hate DSC/Pic got for being too dark, now this is too lighthearted?
These reactions would be funny if they didnt also make me sad.
After the dumpster fire of a year that 2020 has generally been, I think we could all do with a little “light hearted”.Where Trek is concerned, I'll take too lighthearted over too dark any day of the week. It is one of the reasons I prefer The Orville to CBS' current offerings.
Seriously! Bring on the funny! After the dumpster fire of a year that 2020 has generally been, I think we could all do with a little “light hearted”.

Even if it does what is lost?As someone who really dislikes the Orville, I hope it doesn’t go too far down that road. Either way, I’m looking forward to finding out.
