Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

If we wait long enough, it'll get a reboot/sequel eventually. That's what I've learned the last ten years.
We've already waited longer than we had to for BSG to get rebooted, and that's getting another reboot in a lesser span of time. How much longer do we have to wait?

But anyway, Lower Decks.

I'm glad they've got Jerry O'Connell. I liked him on Sliders which, for a while, was FOX's answer to Star Trek until they fucked it up.

I think this is the first time we've had a husband-wife team as stars on seperate simultaneously airing Trek productions. There was Visitor and Siddig in DS9, but that was the same show (and they married during the series).

Well, he did say "separate simultaneously airing Trek productions", so the same show doesn't count.

I was talking about main cast members too, although I guess we don't know if O'Connell will be part of the main cast or just a recurring guest due to the conceit behind the show. If we include guest stars on seperate productions, then Leonard Nimoy's wife and Roxann Dawson's ex-husband were both on DS9, and some oddities like Gordon Clapp (DS9)/Deborah Taylor (TNG) or Ernie Milrich (TNG)/Melinda Clarke (Enterprise) or Billy Van Zandt (TMP)/Adrienne Barbeau (DS9), and probably many more I can't find likely exist.

The pylons look pretty solid, so what's the difference between them and the neck of the Connie Enterprise when it comes downs to it ? The pylons actually invoke the shape of the Connie's neck to my eyes.

Who knows, maybe the impractical design is intended to be source of comedy? We could have characters complaining in the show about it. Maybe they were inspired by the Oberth on that front.
Possibly. But it could also be for practical reasons in marketing too. From an aesthetic POV, I'm not keen on the ship. However, I think it fits as the design of a ship for the purposes of the premise of the show. If they'd have gone with something "cooler", people might be too demanding to see the same design in a "serious" setting.

The nacelles look more TOS than what Discovery has given us, IMO.

It's kind of a bummer, but I can't remember ever being so disinterested in a new Star Trek project. I think I even had greater anticipation for ENT and Star Trek: Insurrection. I guess I'm just not an "animation" guy.

I'll undoubtedly watch and I hope it's something maybe I can enjoy with my young sons, which would be a saving grace...but if it's raunchy and "adult humor-oriented," that won't work either.

I hope it isn’t raunchy, too. But I get the vibe the showrunner loves TNG and wants to respectful of it, and to the franchise in general. I’m really looking forward to it.

The comedy is going to make or break this show.

But, I have to say that of the newer hero ships this one actually appeals to me the most.

They’re aiming for a TV-14 rating if I recall, so take that as you will. I know Mike said they don’t want it to be R rated.

I suspect the comedy is going to be very much similar to what we saw with the TNG Season 8 Twitter feed, and subsequent book based on it, both from Mike McMahan. Immature at times, yes, but not raunchy or especially adult oriented.

McMahan also wrote the Short Trek about Harry Mudd and the Tellarite, for anyone who wants to sample his work without looking up a Twitter feed or a book from a few years ago.
