Star Trek: Generations.

Some thoughts. Nice score by Dennis McCarthy, and very fitting that the original composer for the series should compose the first film. Freed from Rick Berman's musical shock therapy, he composed a good TNG style score full of warmth.

The Enterprise-D looks great with the new lighting. It's one of the my favorite Enterprises and I was sad that it was destroyed in the first movie. The TNG and DS9 uniforms look colorful and sleek on the big screen.

The first 20 minutes are excellent and Shatner, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan were fabulous together. I liked Kirk's final toupee.

The film's main problem is that it has to bring Kirk and Picard together, kill Picard, give Picard an emotional arc, tell an adventurous story, and give Data a major subplot. There is just too much going on. The script needed a major edit and Data's emotion chip story should have been the first to go. Spiner did a great job but it could have been saved for another movie. The script feels loosely integrated and that's its biggest problem.

Soran is a good villain for the film. He is an obsessed badass who doesn't care how many lives he has to kill in order to get what he wants, and he can hold his own next to the Kingons.

After the opening scenes with Kirk, the highlight of the film was the introduction to Soran in the 24th century, the battle between Lursa and Betor and The Enterprise, and the Enterprise crash landing.

After the crash, the movie feels anti-climactic. After the crash the film stops and starts over. Its drains the audience to have a big suspenseful action scene followed by slow scenes where Picard explores the Nexus. Its feels like another episode tagged onto the film. I liked the idea of The Nexus and there is something unique about having Picard recruit Kirk on a beautiful desert planet that no one cares about to save a solar system no one cares about. But it should not have followed the best climaxes of the film.

The scenes with Shatner and Stewart were good although it feels more like Captain Picard and Bill Shatner than Captain Picard and Captain Kirk. Finally the two men meet-and they cook eggs together. Kirk's death was just fine. I remember when I saw the film in 1994 some jerks actually clapped when he died.

I have a suspicion that Generations may be my favorite TNG film. It's certainly the best looking TNG film and the one most reminiscent of the series.

"The House Of Quark" - DS9, season 3

its been a great rewatch so far, and i was looking forward to this episode.

A brave Ferengi indeed!
Also that marriage ceremony, and what a divorce!.... Very speedy stuff :-) love it!

Star Trek: First Contact. Competent but underwhelming. Overrated. Polished and well-produced.

Fine score by Jerry Goldsmith. Amazing new sets for the Enterprise-E. Solid direction by Jonathan Frakes. Like Generations First Contact looks great.

Zefram Cochrane and the Vulcan first contact gives the movie some emotional resonance. It was a cool way to establish the turning point towards Rodenberry's utopia. The character isn't the same from TOS but I can't imagine Riker and company having to struggle to complete their mission with that Cochrane. A movie needs conflict. The Earthbound scenes contrast nicely to the Borg scenes on the Enterprise.

The Borg scenes on the new Enterprise consists mainly of cat and mouse action scenes that don't really draw the viewer into a compelling narrative. The only thing that builds up is Picard 's Ahab complex, which seems out of character.

It's a disappointment that the TNG films only got weaker from here.

Star Trek: Insurrection. I enjoyed it probably for the first time. Insurrection is meant for the small screen. I've said some pretty harsh things about it on this forum over the years. I understand some of the complaints leveled against Insurrection. The ethical dilemma is strange, the aliens are uncreative, bland, and forgettable, the stakes are too low, the humor is pathetic(pimple and boob gags on TNG!?!)and the space battles both contrived and unexciting. When I rewatched it I found that I enjoyed the first hour. The discovery of the conspiracy was the best part of the film. The cast was great together in this movie, and I enjoyed seeing a clean shaven Riker. As usual Jerry Goldsmith composed a lovely score and Picard's love interest was quite the dish. The ending had too many complicated threads to wrap up and I don't think the general audience cared one bit. And the final action scenes were forgettable. Having rewatched it I don't think Insurrection is that much worse than Generations or First Contact. None of the TNG movies came close to the highs of the TV show sadly.

Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. It works as a somber buddy movie and Christopher Lloyd was a good Klingon. One of Shatner's best movie performances.

TNG - Reunion. What struck me is how freakin adorable Alexander is. He looks so tiny compared to Worf! His little uniform is so cute.
