Star Trek: Generations.
Some thoughts. Nice score by Dennis McCarthy, and very fitting that the original composer for the series should compose the first film. Freed from Rick Berman's musical shock therapy, he composed a good TNG style score full of warmth.
The Enterprise-D looks great with the new lighting. It's one of the my favorite Enterprises and I was sad that it was destroyed in the first movie. The TNG and DS9 uniforms look colorful and sleek on the big screen.
The first 20 minutes are excellent and Shatner, Walter Koenig, and James Doohan were fabulous together. I liked Kirk's final toupee.
The film's main problem is that it has to bring Kirk and Picard together, kill Picard, give Picard an emotional arc, tell an adventurous story, and give Data a major subplot. There is just too much going on. The script needed a major edit and Data's emotion chip story should have been the first to go. Spiner did a great job but it could have been saved for another movie. The script feels loosely integrated and that's its biggest problem.
Soran is a good villain for the film. He is an obsessed badass who doesn't care how many lives he has to kill in order to get what he wants, and he can hold his own next to the Kingons.
After the opening scenes with Kirk, the highlight of the film was the introduction to Soran in the 24th century, the battle between Lursa and Betor and The Enterprise, and the Enterprise crash landing.
After the crash, the movie feels anti-climactic. After the crash the film stops and starts over. Its drains the audience to have a big suspenseful action scene followed by slow scenes where Picard explores the Nexus. Its feels like another episode tagged onto the film. I liked the idea of The Nexus and there is something unique about having Picard recruit Kirk on a beautiful desert planet that no one cares about to save a solar system no one cares about. But it should not have followed the best climaxes of the film.
The scenes with Shatner and Stewart were good although it feels more like Captain Picard and Bill Shatner than Captain Picard and Captain Kirk. Finally the two men meet-and they cook eggs together.
Kirk's death was just fine. I remember when I saw the film in 1994 some jerks actually clapped when he died.
I have a suspicion that Generations may be my favorite TNG film. It's certainly the best looking TNG film and the one most reminiscent of the series.
