By the end tag scene, where it's apparently a day or so later when a message is received that the recovered Van Gelder has destroyed the neural neutralizer, we don't really know what happened to Helen Noel after the mission. Perhaps she temporarily stays at Tantalus to help Van Gelder get things back in order.

I think the natural tendency is to think she stayed on the ship, and she and Kirk get cozy. The thought that she didn't occurred while watching the scene earlier. Kirk's still coping with his torture by Adams. She's not on the bridge for the tag scene, she's not mentioned in the message from Tantalus. That makes me think of the Voyager episode "Collective". Where they find a baby borg that they take on Voyager. The baby borg just disappears into thin air and is never spoken of or even alluded to ever again... Sort of a "collective" amnesia...
