TOS-r: The Return of the Archons

Again. Gee, I love this one. A good-sized cast with the stars, the usual bridge support, at least 7 speaking guest and secondary roles, and what looks to be at least 10 background extras and stunt people in the backlot scenes. Those extras are effectively used in the exteriors. Nearly every time there's a closeup, 2 or more extras are moving like zombies in the background, making the city seem full of people.

And then there's Festival. It's brief on screen, and just pure chaos. Men and women lustfully pursuing each other, a woman even jumps on Kirk. I love those townspeople, they're used so well.

I always thought the almost artificial, wax-like sheen used on the faces of some of Landru's citizens made the episode even creepier. They were living, biological humanoids but their eerie appearance and makeup made them seem less so. "Archons" doesn't get enough love from the fans. It has its seriously corny moments but it's quite the creepy and atmospheric episode.

I just love everything they put into those exterior scenes. There's a little blonde woman in black who shows up a few times, sometimes prominently in group shots. There's a good look at her reaching down to pick up a weapon when the Body is summoned. I'm always watching her. The crew worked hard to make those townfolk like somnambulists, it's amazing the society can sustain itself with everyone in a daze, but somehow they're able to clean the streets before the next Festival. And the use of the Vina music completely sells that we're in Weirdsville.

On Tuesday I watched eight episodes of TOS and TNG back to back while recovering from surgery. I managed to stumble across an episode of TOS I don't think I've ever seen -- involving a villain who turned most of the crew into bucky-balls of powder. Kirk won the day by the power of his libido, naturally. It was on the same disc as "Patterns of Force" and "The Omega Glory". I don't recall most of the TNG episodes, as I was REALLY out of it. One had a genetically engineered supersoldier trying to escape from Zefram Cochrane.

"By Any Other Name" (TOS)
"The Hunted" (TNG)

:techman:

 I'm going to have a follow-up procedure on September 8. I'll have to be sure to watch a few more episodes in a dazed mental state and then post cryptic plot summaries here!

"Flashback" - Star Trek: Voyager

Odd. They really fudged up the timeline of this episode compared to the film.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country said:
SPOCK: Good morning. Two months ago a Federation starship monitored an explosion on the Klingon moon Praxis.

Flashback said:
JANEWAY: So what happened? Did you go to Praxis?
TUVOK: No. We were warned off by the Klingons, and resumed our survey mission. However, two days later, we learned that two Starfleet officers were accused of murdering the Klingon Chancellor.

I know that "Flashback" takes place primarily in Tuvok's head. But it is still a pretty big goof.

And then there's Dmitri Valtane standing alive and well behind Captain Sulu at the end of Star Trek VI while Tuvok's memory virus has him dying during the battle in the Azure Nebula, which happened before the final clash at the Khitomer Peace Conference.

But we won't go there. I like that episode enough to learn not to nitpick it too much. :)

The end of "The Swarm" is really freaking similar to the end of Star Trek: Nemesis.
