List of Trek questions that keep us up at night

Miles O'Brian did say that he thought Worf smelled musky and peaty, not really a bad smell. So maybe Klingons wouldn't have smelled bad to Vulcans. Humans smell like sweat and ass. :)
That's because Worf is not only a Klingon ideologue; he also very fastidious. Have you seen the TNG episode where he has to wear the dress uniform and is obsessing over his sash? Worf is the kinda guy that takes a sonic shower after Everytime he goes #2. He keeps his haircut perfectly even, he trims his beard daily. He wears aftershave and occasionally cologne. His hands always look freshly manicured, etc.

He probably irons his uniforms everyday with a nice starched crease, and keeps that big metal sash thing superbly polished.

Now everyday Klingons are whole different story. Theyre disgusting. They don't shower. They stink! If one of us stepped on board a Klingon ship, we'd probably puke. That's why they keep the lights so dim. It hides all the disgusting filth, from having to look at it.

Why didn't we get a glimpse of a Parrises Squares game? We got fencing, racquetball, even Bajoran Springball. But Parrises Squares was supposed to be dangerous, and it would have been nice to see WHY it was so dangerous.

Doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't clean. Sonic showers don't involve water. Maybe he just didn't like his skin getting wet. It might be a point of honor among Klingons to not bathe (warrior culture and all that) but maybe they decided sonic showers didn't "count." Or maybe Worf picked up cleanliness, having been raised by humans and all. Or maybe Klingon skin just didn't react well to frequent exposure to water.

Look, Worf didn't become so particular about his looks overnight. It took a few years on the Enterprise, and many a night alone, posing in front of his mirror. In season 1, he liked to growl, and didn't care how stupid his hair looked, but by Season 7 and beyond, he was a refined man with refined tastes.

I don't see why Klingons would necessarily think it honorable to be dirty. When they're not fighting, they can just zip into the sonic shower for a few minutes and be done with it.

Besides, the worse they smell, the more likely their enemies are to detect their presence, so it's in the Klingon warrior's best interests to be clean anyway. ;)

That's one of their problems...they don't have those. Another problem they have is they can't wash their uniforms-they'll rust. The leather will dry out. All the rivets will corrode. They just keep their uniforms greased up with Targ fat, and sleep in their clothes.

^ Everyone has sonic showers. Even the Klingons. (There's no proof they don't have them, anyway.)

And since everyone also has replicators, that takes care of the uniforms. Just throw them into the recycler and it pops out a new one.

How far, in terms of distance, did Troi's telepathic abilities extend ... she could sense Riker's mood when she was aboard the ship and he was on a planet
Riker might be a special case for Troi. When they were a couple years before, Riker was able to sense Troi's thoughts, even through she's not a full telepath.

Her being able to sense his mood could indicate they share a ongoing connection.

Yes, I always thought that Imzadi meant they had a kind of psychological connection that was more powerful than Deanna's usual abilities.

I don't think Klingons have replicators. Or at least they don't use them on their ships.

Lots of people don't like taking a bath, they prefer taking showers.
Yeah, and baths are pretty rare on spaceships for practical reasons I guess. People don't even shower in water in the 24th century, so Worf would think it a bit odd. It's only people who enjoy it as a luxury like Deanna and Janeway.

Actually, why does the ever practical Tuvok suggest Neelix take a bath in 'Caretaker'? Surely he'd just direct the Talaxian into the nearest Sonic shower?

^ Maybe Neelix is allergic to sonic showers? I'm sure it happens. Some alien races may not be able to stand the sonic waves that drive them.

That reminds me, I've always wondered how sonic showers work. We know that they get the actual dirt off you, but what about the sweat and the stink? At least with a regular shower, you can be sure that it works because you use soap and water. Those don't just get the dirt off, they get you clean. How could a sonic shower do that? They obviously don't use soap...

And does it feel as good to take a sonic shower as it does to take one with water?

I assume it's a utilitarian thing. Smells are caused by bacteria, so I presume the sonic shower works by removing dirt and killing bacteria. Presumably you'd feel clean, though in a different way.

I think we see it once on Voyager - IIRC the dirt was flying off B'Elanna.
