Let’s talk about Veronica Mars

There were already other VM-threads on this board, but since they are of older dates I hope it’s okay when I start a new one.

I just finished the third (and unfortunately last) season yesterday and I was curious if anybody else saw the show and would like to discuss it. (For folks who haven’t seen it yet but are going to, be aware of spoilers).

I recently bought the DVDs because the price was so good and I got hooked to the show immediately. I liked especially Veronica’s witty remarks, her smartness and the mixture of toughness and vulnerability. In addition, I enjoyed the leitmotifs in season 1 (who killed Lilly) and 2 (who is responsible for the bus-accident) and thought it was a pity that they didn’t stick to that concept in season 3. It probably would have made a better third season. But even though there were complains that the last season was weakest one, I didn’t dislike it that much in the end. I was even very fond of the new titles. In general I liked the combination of film-noir, drama and romance. Many cases that Veronica or her dad solved were pretty demanding, leaving the main-characters in difficult situations. So, while watching, I found myself often somewhere between being shocked or feeling uneasy. Of course, a lot of dialogue was so funny, that I was laughing a lot, too.

In terms of season 4 and Veronica joining the FBI I’m not convinced that that would have been a smart move. I believe it’s extremely tricky to skip several years and to move the characters to the future. Although I think it would have made a decent ending for Veronica Mars if the show had lasted 6 or 7 seasons, I don’t think it would have worked in the fourth season. There would have been too many changes of characters and places. A stand-alone episode that focuses on Veronica and her internship at the FBI could have been a better possibility. Viewers could see how Veronica fits in with FBI before she returns to college. I would have preferred that over the idea that she is suddenly a trained agent.

What else did I like? The relationship between Veronica and her father and the relationship between her and Logan (for different reasons, obviously ;) ). I liked the warmhearted way that Keith would talk to his daughter and the way they were teasing each other. In a way he makes a cool dad who supports his daughters independence (at least most of the time), which is great. As for Logan, I found it extremely interesting to see that he wasn’t just a superficial jerk but that deeper issues motivated his actions. And the chemistry between him and Veronica was great, too. I honestly had a hard time believing it that she dumped him first for Duncan and later for Piz :wtf:. And since their love is epic, I’m convinced that they would have ended up together again sooner or later, we just didn’t get a chance to see it.

This brings me to rumors of a movie. I know that it most likely won’t happen, but boy, what a shame. It doesn’t even have to be a big-screen movie, a “goes-directly-to-DVD-movie” would be fine, too. I would definitely buy it.

I loved the first season, mostly loved the second season, and ALMOST loved the third. The final season's first plotline with the campus rapist(s) was more interesting than the other ones after the 8th or so episode, IIRC. I agree that Veronica and Piz was a really stupid move, as they did such a great job developing Veronica and Logan together. Duncan was kind of dull, too, and his exit with the new baby was sort of clumsy. Weevil and Wallace (Team W!) never got enough to do, and as a result I think Wallace ended up being another sort of boring character, but I always really liked Weevil. And finally, Keith was great. Overall, other than some dull/redundant characters and some iffy stories later on, I think it was a wonderful show. The Echolls family was always the most interesting component, other than Veronica herself of course.

The first is clearly the best, the second was great until the end. He/She who did the bus crash was just stupid, who killed Lily was nicely foreshadowed, who blew up the bus was not.

Season 3 was screwed up by the network several times. The mini arcs worked, but not as well, and once again who did the things were kind of stupid. What really screwed up the season was the show was cut from 22 to 20 episodes, so instead of having a mini arc end the show we got lame stand alone episodes.

Also the series finale should have been used as a long arc, that was a great storyline. I hoped that would be in the movie but it doesn't seem like that was the plan. Plus the movie isn't going anywhere anyways.

Veronica in the FBI was a lame last ditch chance to keep the show on the air, thankfully it failed.

Looking back The CW really screwed up, Veronica Mars, Evergreen, Reaper all got better ratings overall than the trash they kept.

Going with the flow: Season 1 was fantastic, season 2 was decent enough, and season 3 was starting to get weak due to CW interference.

I will always have love and appreciation for VM for introducing me to the lovely Kristen Bell. :)

Kristen Bell was on The Late Late Show last week, she and Craig get along great, she has an awesome sense of humor.

One of the things I love about Veronica Mars is that it was one of the few TV shows out there that was fundamentally about the economic class divide in American society. Most shows are oblivious to the divisions in economic class in American society and the inequalities that result from them, either depicting everyone has generically middle class and financially stable or as so rich that money isn't a concern. Veronica Mars, on the other hand, was about someone who came from a family with limited means struggling to compete with people with much more money.

Not completely on topic but ever since VM was canceled I kept hoping that Kristen might getting the lead in the next Joss Whedon hit show.
I think she's perfect for the witty dialog he's famous for.

Well, since Dollhouse doesn't seem to survive it's current season I say:

get on your ass Joss, write as you've never written before and call Kristen ASAP!

^ I can't quite follow you. Was that a quote from VM ?

Be that as it may, I remembered some quotes from the show that I really liked:

----------------------
Logan: As a rule, I like to start every school day with a hot blond waiting for me in the parking lot.
Veronica: Me too.
Logan: I'm not blond.
Veronica: Or hot.

---------------------------

Lamb: (sarcastically) Still picking winners, huh, Veronica?
Veronica: I told you, when I start picking losers, it's all you.

-----------------------------

I also found out that there are campaigns to get a VM-movie. Just in case that anybody is interested, here's a link:

There is a campaign on facebook, too

i liked a lot of VM, but it never fired on all cylinders... i prefered her and Logan, but it took a long time to get there, and even then it got pretty annoying. Dick was awesome though. i liked her friends, but as the show progressed some of them should have been dropped... seeing Weevil too much weekend his character.

my last problem, for most episodes, it seemed that the first person to have a line (that wasn't a main or recurring character) was the person that committed the crime. it got annoying.

but i loved VM and her dad. one of the best parent/child relationships on TV.

Agreed. I'm not much for class warfare rhetoric but I thought the class divisions of Veronica Mars made it a much more interesting show. It's also part of the reason why I think Veronica in the FBI wouldn't have worked. So much of what made the show great was Veronica's outsider status, not just socially but also in the relationship she had to Sheriff Lamb. I wouldn't have had a problem with skipping ahead a few years into the future but I think Veronica needed to be a private investigator, either on her own or working with her father as a full partner. Actually, considering how Season 3 ended, it would have been interesting to see how Veronica's life would have ended up with Keith in prison.

Keith was my favorite character on that show. I loved how, as smart as Veronica was, there would occasionally be a moment where we would find out that she still wasn't quite as smart as Keith.

Shame what happened to Sheriff Lamb. He was an idiot but he was an idiot that I had come to love to hate by the end. And while it was probably fair that he get some comeuppance by being beaten, I don't think he deserved to be killed.:(

The show needed more Mac. I fell in love with her at first sight. Making her a regular should have been a no-brainer back in Season 2! Instead, they wait until Season 3, and she's still not on that much.:(

It's a paraphrase from the scene when Joss Whedon guest-starred as the "employee of the month" at the car rental place.

Right, I forgot. Thanks for clearing that up :).

So much of what made the show great was Veronica's outsider status, not just socially but also in the relationship she had to Sheriff Lamb.

Agreed. I thought Lamb was a great antagonist and that her relationship with him was important for Veronica to keep going and doing all those investigations, because he certainly wasn't going to do it. And from an audience point of view, you wanted her to find justice.

I felt that there could have been more of Mac and Wallace in the third season. Especially Mac's character was reduced to someone who was only there in order to have a romantic relationship. In the previous season, she was smarter and Veronica had asked her for help more often, at least IMHO. But the more the series progressed the more they seemed to have dropped that. Which, BTW, was a real shame.

I just finished watching the show for the first time myself.

I thought the first season was fantastic. I didn't care much for the second season. The main arc was too convoluted for my tastes. But I thought the show rebounded in the third season.

By the third year, it seemed like they had too many characters to balance. Weevil seemed to be mostly forgotten by season three. As was Wallace. In fact, it seemed that lots of characters would disappear for several episodes on end before turning up again. Then again, that was a problem starting with season 2, so who knows.

First season was great, second was good, third was ok. It is too bad it didn't continue after that, but with the direction it was heading, that is probably for the best.
