Legend of the Seeker anyone?

I've seen billboards all over town for it; I don't recall any print ads, but I could have missed them. I noticed lots of ads on the internet, though, most recently on Zap2It.

I'm in San Francisco and have seen absolutely nothing. I also block all internet ads (except for on TrekBBS of course!) so I wouldn't see anything that way.

Not only that, but per the website instructions, I taped the show at 7pm on the local Fox affiliate. Got a Friends rerun instead. Oh well. :p Judging from the comments here, I wouldn't have liked it anyway.

Not bad so far, but I guess I have questions regarding a couple of points they split from the book on:

-Shar's discussion with Richard left out a few things that will be important in later books/seasons

-Whole sequence with the Adie was odd. Why set up the spirits of the dead, and then not have them cross through the barrier using the stone? Doesn't make sense, as they don't return again. Along those lines, why no weakening of the barrier, creating an area they could cross through? Other than a 'kewl' sword fight, doesn't make sense for Rahl to just knock it down, and big enough to walk an army through. Nightstone gets used again later, but for now, they set the whole thing up for crossing the barrier, and then didn't follow through.

-Burning the book. This seems a bit of a problem, plot-wise, seeing as how the book is essentially how Richard wins at the end. But in the book, his Dad had crossed the barrier (or gotten it from someone who had, I forget), made Richard memorize it, and then burned it himself. It still gets destroyed, but not until after Richard has the whole thing in his photographic memory. That's not only important to THIS book, but about half of the series, as that book keeps coming up as important. For him to read the first sentence only, and then burn it, means we're going to be going a LOT more off-script as we move along.

-Along those lines, Zed doesn't make the first part of the journey with Richard and Kahlan, which gives them some time to themselves (and aimless wandering towards mud people) before Zed catches back up.

Interesting Scout. I'm in the process of obtaining this to watch as we speak. I've been keen to find where it deviates from the book (although I find my memory of the book has faded more than I thought) but found myself reading Goodkind's official forums which, hilariously, forbid discussion on the differences between the series and the books.

I Just finished watching it and I definitely liked the first half better than the second half. The lead actor isn't as bad as I had feared but he will still take some getting used to. I can see why they chose a young actor now because it looks like they want him to grow into the role which may not be a bad idea since this series has the potential to go on for a long time if it pans out like they hope. I also liked Zedd more than I thought I would and thought Kahlan was pretty well casted.

As for the story, I didn't mind most of the changes but I really don't like that they removed Richard's history with Zedd. I was also kind of puzzled by how they treated The Book Of Counted Shadows at first but now I think I know where they're going with this.

My guess is that since Richard was made to memorize the book as a child by George Cypher and told to keep it a secret he didn't want to reveal to Zedd and Kahlan that he already knew what it was. Since he had already memorized the one true copy of The Book Of Counted Shadows it didn't matter that he burned what was must have been a copy at the end of the pilot. I assume it was a copy because when George Cypher burned the book after he was sure that Richard had memorized it all sorts of shadows and what-not emanated from the book as it burned. That's my theory anyway.

Overall it wasn't too bad. The only really cringe-worthy scene was the whole lynch mob thing at the bridge. I'll probably give this series a chance and see what they can do with it.

Well it was different enough to make me wonder whether I'll be able to get into the series or not.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that Darken Rahl was not how I pictured him at all. I was very disappointed with this bit of casting. The People's Palace in D'Hara also lacked the grandeur conveyed by the books.

I don't know... it's a good night picture... I like it....

I liked Craig Parker as Haldir in the first two Lord of the Rings films.

I found it difficult to take him seriously as a villain with a name like "Darken." Are the books that tongue-in-cheek?

Tongue-in-cheek is far from what the books set out to be.

The People's Palace looks ok... not quite what I imagined, but I guess that happens with any adaption.

Full disclosure: I'm trying to get a feel for interest in the new Sam Raimi-produced show "Legend of the Seeker." The show has some Star Trek connections, namely Ken Biller (Voyager) and Mike Sussman (Voyager, Enterprise).

The people you're promoting were responsible for the worst series of Star Trek (Voyager) and the worst pseudo science fiction series ever (Enterprise)? And you think this is a good thing, that people will watch because of their previous fiascos?

Are ya kidding?

God - when you put it THAT way!!!!

I LOATHED VOY and ENT. They were NOT Star Trek.

I think I will give this show a miss.

while discussing the episode with my wife... I exclaimed in glee that I'll enjoy seeing kailyn battling the D'haran army naked... she said she rather doubted we'd see that.... which was a depressing thought...

Not all of the writers on either show were incompetent hacks.

I can't speak for Mr. Biller, but Mike Sussman is actually quite talented.

The exterior shot is fine, it was the interiors I was referring to. The set for the Palace was very lackluster in my opinion.

To make it short: I watched it and overall I liked it.

I'm glad they kept Zedd's naked rock scene. I'm still trying to grasp why they destroyed the book of counted shadows. That's just an odd move for me, even if they're trying to make the show more "exciting" or.. something.

Apparently I've been pronouncing everyone's name wrong (Kahlan, Denee and Adie) and not according to Goodkind's version of ENGLISH. i'm surprised they didnt call Chase something like Chazé

Well, as I've said, I'm British, and I'm used to fantasy characters having British accents, so Kahlan was always pronounced Kar-Lan to me. Goodkind pronounces it Kay-lun though.

I really liked it! I'm only partway through the first book, so I don't really have that to compare it to, but I found it a really enjoyable show. I watched with some friends and we all found it to be very entertaining. I like all three leads. Zedd naked with the chicken really cracked me up. Loved Chase--I thought he was excellent. I don't know too much about the Rahl from the books, but I liked the LOTR guy as Darken Rahl. I agree "Darken" is kind of a "duh" name for a bad guy, but subtlety and sci fi don't always go together.

Can't wait for next week's episode!

My pronounciation was always closer to yours, in my head I would usually say "ka lawn" not kay-lun. ah well :p

Ugh... that was just not good. Something about modern American accents and medival fantasy that just does work, so anachronistic.

It was just so hard to take anything seriously, especially surfer dude with his super coiffed do.

Also, some horrendous green screen work in the final battle. Bad CG overall.

And yeah, the story was pants.

Well, pants off, if the nude wizard was any indication...:p

I loved the music. Had a nice Celtic-y feel to it. The fight scenes and horse chase sequences were also pretty good. Overall, not a bad outing for the premiere...it'll keep me watching into next week. :)

The humor failed to deliver, though. There were a few lines of dialogue that were probably supposed to be funny, but fell flat. I think the show could do better to not take itself so seriously. Even Galactica, one of the darkest shows on T.V., can crack a joke without a "WAH-WAH-WAH" sounding off in my head.

Richard still needs to grow on me. He was better than expected, but if the show wants to capitalize on the "forbidden love" between him and Kahlan, the actors really need to work on that. The chemistry between those two is lukewarm at best.

And speaking of Kahlan, she was great! Looks the part and can hold her own.

I was sad to see Fayn go, he was kinda cool. If he had black hair he would have made a good Darken. Of all the casting choices Darken Rahl is the worst. How is he supposed to be old enough to be Richards dad?
I liked Kahlan(thats how i pronounced it in my head), was actually quite pleased with Zedd, am still a little iffy on Richard(though he can take his shirt off as much as he likes) and Chase was...ok, i guess. I always pictured Chase larger and friendlier.

Hey, i noticed a woman in the background around Darken, wonder if she was a Mord-Sith? Cara, maybe?

I really enjoyed the show, didn't think i would, but was rather pleasantly surprised. I will keep watching.
