Legend of the Seeker anyone?

"Wizard's First Rule through Temple of The Winds, the first four books, are a good read."

Yes, and that is why I plan to follow the above.

So, the "legendseeker" poster, who's trying to schill the series on a star trek board, hasn't even read the books? Really? that's pretty disappointing. Would think they'd at least send out people that knew something about the series. As neither a star trek or a sword of truth fan, it means they picked active BBS boards at random, and people to post on them, which makes me more nervous about the quality of the show. How can you make all these comments about things like how great the casting of different characters is if you haven't read the books, and thus don't really know much about the characters beyond the casting sheet?

And in other bad news for this show, I finally saw a commercial for it today. The commercial wasn't bad, but there was one serious downside: it was on the CW. A 6th rate network, that's not even carried in all markets.

On the plus side, since that channel does shit ratings, maybe if 4-5 of us watch this show, it'll be one of their big hits, and stay on the air? Means it has no real chance of mainstream success, but since it takes very little for a CW show to be one of their better performers, it may have a chance. As long as it can produced pretty cheaply...

It's actually syndicated, so it'll be on more networks than just the CWs.

true, different networks will pick it up in different regions. Tends to be the same network a lot of the time, though. Not for everywhere, but a lot of them. And the Boston/RI area, a fairly decent-sized viewing region, is getting it on the CW...

Actually no network has purchased this show. It's only individually owned television stations (and those who own several) who purchase these programs.

Affiliates who are aligned with CBS, NBC and CBS have the least amount of hours available so you will see fewer of those stations purchase the rights for an hour long syndicated action/adventure show. Then you have Fox at the next level of available hours to purchase. Then you have the CW My TV network with even more time available for affiliates to purchase. Then you have those affiliates who have no network affiliate and who's bread and butter are the syndication packages of both new and rerun material.

I would expect much of the nation to get its coverage from the last two sources the two netlets (CW and My Network), and those without any network affiliation.

The one advantage to this is that unlike the netlets or cable a syndication package can get nearly 100% coverage. They may be on some off the wall stations and some crazy timeslots, but they generally do have better clearance.

Cable for example hovers around 70%, My Network is at 60% (last I heard) and the CW is at around 80%.

I was a little disappointed, I thought the first episode was tonight but it was the making-of special. Still they do show the opening scenes and this looks like it has some potential. The pilot at least looks like it was filmed well and looks really nice in HD. It certainly came across much better than my initial impressions from that trailer long ago. (And the cleavage is some of the best all year ;) )

I'm not sure about the acting chops of the Richard actor but I don't think it will be a deal breaker.

I was happy to see Bruce "Gyro Captain" Spence has a role in this, haven't seen him in a long time.

What's wrong with people who are really excited about a new film or television series, who may never have read the books on which it's based or the older series on which it's derived? Some of the biggest fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films are people who hadn't read Tolkien's novels. Some of the biggest fans of the upcoming Star Trek film will undoubtedly be people who have little, if any, familiarity with Star Trek.

As I noted a page back, I've not read the Sword of Truth books. If it weren't for WGN showing commercials for the series repeatedly during Cubs games in the latter part of the season, I might not have been familiar with the series at all. But now I've gone and looked at the new trailer online, thanks to LegendSeeker, and I'm actually looking forward to watching the pilot film.

To build an audience, the producers are going to need to hook people who have no recognition of the source material. If the series were made for the fans, it would fail. Look at Doctor Who. It's the biggest show in Britain right now, far more popular that the classic series, and it's that way because it went out an appealed to people who either thought Doctor Who was about dodgy acting and wobbly sets or people who didn't even know what Doctor Who was.

Who better to start from viral buzz for a series than someone like LegendSeeker? He hasn't read the books, and he's excited by the series. He got me interested enough that I'm going to give the series a shot. I'll tip my hat to him; job well done, dude. :)

I say the making of it thingie and it looked like a movie.

However how much money can this show make? It must cost a lot to film, and it's not going to be a huge ratings show.

I might watch, if I remember too.

Some very good points Allyn.

Actually, I only wanted to know which book to read up to. I'm in the middle of the second book (remember, these are like 800-900 pages) and am trying to see how many are worthwhile. One poster told me the first 6 were fine.

The show is getting people talking because, as Sam Raimi said, there isn't anything like this on TV.

Personally I think the show can only improve on the books. I would never recommend anyone to read the sword of truth books. The show will probably be much more enjoyable without having read the books. I think the show will probably be a light hearted quick paced action-adventure show, hopefully with some humour and it could be enjoyable.
I don't like the actor playing Richard Rahl as I always pictured Richard older, taller (after all we learn in the first book that Richard was taller then most men) and manlier but maybe his acting skills will make up for it.
If the show really follows the books it will be quite comical at times (evil chickens and so on)

I would not advise anyone to read the books though even if they will like the shows. Because the books just are not really good (stupid concepts, too moralistic, badly edited, repetitive, too violent etc)

Legend of the Seeker:

The first two are definitly the "best" two of the bunch. In some way I would say that Wizard's first rule is a not too bad slash and hack fantasy novel. It is quick-paced, lots of things happend and it has a satisfying conclusion. As a stand alone novel it would have worked. Part two (that's stone of tears is it not?) falls into that same category.
There's already plenty of stuff wrong with these first two books (stupid concepts as odd-looking vines and fire is bad speeches and too much mindless violence and (almost) rape) but at least not too much mindnumbing moralistic philosophy.
I can't remember what number three (blood of the fold) was about to be honest. Remember the basic story of all the others but not of this one so I won't comment on Blood of the fold.
Any of the books after number two or three are just very very bad and I would not recommend wasting your time reading those.

I reckon you're about right (although we wouldn't get to the evil chicken until season 5, and this show is NOT going to go that far, so I guess it doesn't matter). However, Goodkind has always been VERY serious about his books and whether they should be adapted. I'm not sure how much he'll have allowed them to be changed.

For anyone who's interested it's also going to be on WGN nationally (I belive), so it will have one consistent location for anyone with cable. I'm probably going to be watching it on WGN myself, since it will probably be on at a more convient time there than on one of the local stations.

He's excited about it, at least in part, because he's working to drum up excitement for the show on sci-fi and fantasy message boards. He's said as much, i believe.

Just saying that if I was planning something like this, I'd send out people with at least a passing knowledge of the product. You know, so there can be a halfway decent exchange of ideas, or in case there is a follow-up question, or anything else requiring more than a passing knowledge of the product you're trying to schill.

I'm still interested in seeing the pilot, but it's not because the guy working for the show is "excited" about the product, despite not knowing anything beyond what he's seen so far...

He sure seems to know the show/promotion, etc. which is probably enough. I don't think he's a one-man marketing campaign so much as just someone trying to raise awareness. Either way, the topic of this thread is the show, not the poster with the name close to the show. ;)

It's premiering this weekend! It'll be fun to have a new fantasy show on the air. I don't know about the rest of you, but the new shows this fall haven't been cutting it for me. :( I gave up on Fringe after a few episodes, and though I'm a bit curious about Crusoe, I haven't really been motivated to check it out.

Has anyone watched the behind-the-scenes stuff on the website? I haven't yet, but it looks like there's a fair amount there.

Darken Rahl looks pretty cool, too.

If they succeed in there plans and they do film a book per season.... it will be interesting to see how they fill the gaps... 22 episodes per book is quite a lot to fill... yes i do believe there will be violence... but it will be later at night and acceptable... no i dont believe there will be all the violence that is in the book...

and to clarify... i have yet to READ any of the sword of truth books... but, I have listened to all the series in audiobooks.... all two times some three times....

You know, you would think with a syndicated show, where getting good time slot is a big deal they would want to advertise the best time slot. Yet here in Albany, they are listing a 12:30am showing on Monday for CBS on their website. However, it also airs 8PM Saturday on our CW, (our CBS and CW stations are owned by the same company) about as good a syndicated time slot as possible. After finding out this time, I will actually be able to watch the show this week.

Just saying, it's tough to raise awareness of something if you're not actually aware or familiar with that thing yourself. It's actually counter-productive.

For example, he talked about how the actress playing Kahlan was a perfect casting. People got excited, because he appears to be connected to the show, and thus inside info. How does he determine a perfect casting, though, if he's never read the source material, and thus really has no idea about the character outside of what he's seen or heard? Not a useful statement if all he meant was that the actress is hot, or looks kewl holding a sword. Being actually familiar with the series, the plotline, and the characters would have made his comments semi-credible. Knowing that he's NOT familiar with the material, well....

I remember at the end of DS9's run it would only air around here at 2AM!

I think 11-11:30PM isn't that bad of a slot though, because they don't have to compete with prime time programming. Around that time is when you might try to catch something a little different.
