Least favorite Trek

Good on you KayArr.

Based on your comments, it's not hard to see why you like DS9 the least. Personally, I love the examination of contemporary issues, and with the Maquis, it was a novel spin that Trek hadn't done before, having the threat coming from within the Federation. Also, later on, the introduction of Section31, and all of a sudden you had imperfect Federation citizens, and imperfect Federation officers. Then there's the Dominion war, which again, for me, was fairly well reasoned, stemming initially from Dominion fears over Federation expansionism into the GQ.

If the political side doesn't take your fancy, and that's fair enough, you might want to avoid, at least in the short term, episodes that focus predominantly on either the Maquis situation or the Dominion war. Try a few of the outstanding standalones; Duet, The Visitor, Far Beyond the Stars, Children of Time, any one of those, you may find more palatable.

Seeing as you'd said that you were going to watch some DS9, I decided to dig through Enterprise and re-viewed a few episodes. I chose the In a Mirror Darkly two-parter. Impressive. Whilst the story itself is emminently better than most stories from the first couple of seasons, I still had issues with the characters. Tucker doesn't do much for me, nor does Reed, both come across as being incredibly wooden. Mayweather, as per usual (from memory) doesn't exactly have a great deal to do, and Sato spends most of her time in one bed or another. I liked Archer's 'Kirkisms' once he had the TOS uniform in (emphasising inappropriate words when he made speeches, slouched to one side in his chair etc!)

And T'Pol in a TOS uniform is always nice to see......

But they weren't IN character in those episodes! Trineer wooden? Most fans seem to think that he was the best thing Enterprise had going for it, once they stripped away some of the redneck qualities (not an opinion I share, I liked him from day one).

Ah well, if I can get DS9 at the library, I'll look for some of those standalones. Right now I'm limited to the Spike tv schedule.

I've seen The Visitor--and that is indeed excellent. I've also seen Far Beyond the Stars--I'm not crazy about it, the best Sci Fi treatment of racism in my book was the old Alien Nation series from Fox, 1989-90. If it gives you any insight into what I like, I'll just say that Alien Nation is my all-time favorite series--drama, humor, scripts, acting, that series had it all!

^^ No, I'll concede that, I usually liked Trineer. I don't think they got the best out of him here. Usually, the only characters I get anything out of were Trip, Phlox, and rightly or wrongly, T'Pol. Reed, Sato and Mayweather, for the most part, may as well have not even been there most of the time, very bland even when they had stuff to do.

I voted for VOY, because after the pilot, the series seemed to go downhill. And by the end of the first season, most of the series' original premise was scrapped. The internal Starfleet/Maquis conflict was essentially gone, the sense of struggle and hardship non-existant. I'm really bummed about VOY because I think it had a lot of potential, and the characters seemed like good choices.

ENT started off really well - I was actually impressed with "Broken Bow." The first season had a lot of solid episodes, IMO, but also some really boring ones. Season two got progressively worse and I stopped watching Star Trek for the first time in over 10 years. But I came back for season 4 and felt that the series was starting to improve.

So VOY gets my vote since it went down, and for me, never came back up.

If you liked the confrontation between Sisko and Eddington, you should check out For the Uniform, and Blaze of Glory. Those three make an arc that is referred to as "Sisko vs. Eddington" on Memory Alpha.

KayArr, I tend to agree with you that Trek is not fun to watch when it tries to be "relevant" by lifting present day issues, inserting them haphazardly into the episodes, and then making a soapbox out those episodes.

It should be noted, however, that DS9 was making a show about what the future would be like, not present day. DS9 was produced before the modern wars and occupations and terrorisms of recent years started occurring & filling up the news constantly. My point is, blame for this should be placed on real world leaders for aping what happened in DS9, not DS9 producers for aping what happened in the real world.

Although Bajorans in particular can be seen as an exception this point; but Bajorans are small potatoes in the grand scheme of the series, once the far more original concept of the Dominion took over.

It's a tie:

Enterprise/Voyager.

Enterprise for seasons 1-3, and Voyager for seasons 2-7, especially 7 (not as in "of 9").

can I recommend a few? if you can, and haven't yet, then watch Duet, Necessary Evil, the Wire, Civil Defense, Little Green Men, Return to Grace, ...Nor the Battle to the Strong, and In the Cards.

These are mostly standalones (sort of) and really, really good.

Voyager is easily my least favorite Trek. I hate it. I fuckin' hate it! It's what turned me off of TNG and DS9 and made me come back to the original Star Trek and decide it was the only one that deserved to exist since TNG and DS9 led to Voyager which was nothing but shit. If they'd stopped at Star Trek then the name Star Trek would never have been attached to Voyager which again has become synonomous with shit to be. When they say Star Trek: Voyager I hear the words Star Trek: Shit. Oh yeah, did I mention I hate Voyager?

^But TOS lead to TNG and DS9, so you're argument is logically flawed. The only Trek you can justifiably like is Enterprise.

:p ;)
