Lady Gaga

if she pissed off Steinbrenner, all the better.

She didn't just piss off the Boss - more like "everyone in the stadium".

Oh teh noes! Lady Gaga showed up to a baseball game in a bikini with a jersey top!

That wasn't the problem. The problem was her acting like a jerk and generally being a mean drunk to everyone. If you wouldn't allow some random loser off the street to disrupt the event of your choice, then she shouldn't get a free pass.

You should give some of her songs a try. "Bad Romance," "Speechless," "Dance in the Dark," and "Monster" are all good.

My personal interest in pop music ended at about 1985. :p

That's one of the things I like about her -- she plays with traditional gender roles in a way that undermines normal conceptions of female beauty and female identity.

Which is another reason I can't appreciate her work, because my view of life is sufficiently black-and-white that I don't want roles to be played with or undermined.

Why? Everything has to fit into a little box and can't be appreciated if it doesn't?

What about freedom? What about the weakness of a social paradigm that can't accommodate difference?

The thing that makes even traditional gender roles fun is that they're so different from one-another. Why not expand that sense of inclusiveness to paradigms that are different from both of the traditional gender roles, too?

By me, yes.

Perhaps my tastes in music (and other things) are narrow-minded and excessively traditional. Fine. I accept that. And I certainly don't mean to imply that Lady Gaga shouldn't have the freedom to sing however she wants to. If I ever implied otherwise, chalk that up to poor phrasing on my part. I should have said "I don't want MY roles to be played with or undermined".

But the fact remains, my own personal tastes in music do not mesh with her 'act' (in terms of pop music, I prefer 80's bands, like Human League, Information Society, etc. I am a huge fan of 80's music). I mean no insult by this, I'm just pointing it out.

And as for 'social paradigm' and all that: Not my problem. You can call my tastes narrow-minded if you like, but I am not responsible for society in general. Maybe I just *enjoy* being narrow-minded. :p

Interesting, because her music, particularly Poker Face and Bad Romance, has been noted for having a lot of 80s influences.

Not my taste, but the fact is, a lot of older people can connect with her music. You should really just give it a try, at least.

Yeah, but they're Yankees fans and they're always pissed off, so no one gives a shit. :ouch:

Are you kidding? That baseball stadium is full of mean drunks, flipping people off and cussing at the Umpire/Coach/players/each other. That's why I find this hilarious. Yelling and being drunk at a baseball game in New York? Perish the thought! That kind of behavior is frowned upon in our dear 'burg! *harumph*

She's a Yankees fan, and she has just as much a right to be piss drunk and verbally abusive as every other Yankees fan.

Seriously, her making people flustered makes me rather happy. She's an artist and she's highly visible. She doesn't really do anything fundamentally negative, and she doesn't hurt anyone.

And when that happens - in any stadium, not just this one - security clamps down. People who start shit, get thrown out. I've seen it.

Wait, so she went into the club house and they didn't want her there, no one told her to leave and that's her fault?

Sounds like your stadium staff should have enforced their rules better, and stop blaming young women for their mistakes.

So you're upset because she behaves like a normal person? I'm not sure I get where you're going. When she's "normal" you get upset. When she's not "normal", you get upset. Guh?

I think her message and originality is good. Her image doesn't always appeal to me, but her music is usually pretty good.

Edge Of Glory, Just Dance, Paparazzi, Judas and her duet with Beyonce, Telephone, are all brilliant.

Bad Romance, Born This Way, Alejandro and Poker Face are merely ok.

I think my list and yours are almost reversed. I think it's strange to hear Beyonce bring a song to a screeching halt, but she kinda does in Telephone. I'd switch Just Dance and Paparazzi with Bad Romance, Born This Way, and Poker Face.

Judas just leaves me cold. It seems like she put too much effort into "edgy" lyrics and not enough into the music itself - the song is just boring. Which for Gaga is a strange accusation.

Really like The Fame Monster, but I'm not loving the new stuff. Too generic dance music for me, it's got none of the the variety and edge of TFM. 'Born this Way' has sort of grown on me, but it's still a bit... dull. Nothing compared to 'Paparazzi' or 'Dance in the Dark'.

I have never heard any of Lady Gaga's songs, nor do I ever want to. All I know about her is that she is completely unattractive to me. And that's not even counting that weird shit she pulls, like wearing dresses made of meat and all that. She just does nothing for me.

It did piss me off when she would show up at baseball games in NYC and act like a drunk bitch, flipping people off and all that crap. Somebody should have thrown a beer at her.

Click for more info on that stupid bullshit, by the way. :sigh:
Shouldn't the fact that she's a native New Yorker have made all of that perfectly OK, though?

Her 'shtick', while bizarre and annoying, is at least original. So points for that, I guess.

Her music, OTHO, is not nearly as original. Catchy, at times, but certainly not original. Sounds like 80's pop music to me, and if I want to listen to 80's pop music, I'll listen to those bands. Not someone who 'sounds like' those bands.

Bottom line - I'm bored with her already.

As for the Yankees thing, J.Allen, I don't think celebrities have the luxury of 'acting like drunk assholes like everyone else'. Because they are NOT 'everyone else'. They are celebrities (BY CHOICE, by the way - no one forced her onto any stage)..and when they act like drunk assholes, they take the attention of the public away from what/who it SHOULD be focused on (in this case, the game between the Yankees and whoever), and turn the focus instead on THEMSELVES.

To me, that incident left her coming off as a media whore; the sort of person who just HAS to always be the center of the fucking universe. And I HATE celebrities like that - who can't let anyone else have one fucking moment in the spotlight, but are constantly all about me, me, me.

Some (though not all!) of these celebrities - all they do is bitch and moan about how they have no privacy, how the media and fans are always hounding them, blah, blah, blah. But their actions speak very clearly that they LIVE to be the center of attention. And if they can't be the center of attention at any given moment by being a nice, quiet, polite, and decent person, they will do it through being a drunk, obnoxious jerkwad. Or by being more and more bizarre all the time. To some of these people (and I'm on the fence about Gaga in this regard - the jury is still out) it is not nearly as much about the 'art' as they claim. To some of them, it is all about being the center of the universe, by whatever means necessary. I mean, why the hell else would Steven Tyler be judging fucking American Idol? :p

Perhaps I am more cynical than you are, but I saw that whole incident as being very self-serving. That game was NOT in fact, 'all about Gaga'. But she sure has hell tried to make it so. Which is a very different situation than is the odd drunk fan who goes overboard for their team, as obnoxious as that can be.

Or are you seriously telling me that she is so stupid that she had no idea that acting like a drunk idiot would NOT grab her a few headlines, and that she would instead be treated like 'any other fan'?

Come on.....Gaga is many things, but stupid is not one of them. ;)

Actually, it would be more like the attention being taken off of her and put on the other drunk Yankees fans. Being famous doesn't mean you can't live your life. The difference is that we get privacy when we goof, while they don't. It's a high price to pay, and yes, they don't have to be famous, but then we can say we don't "have" to do a lot of things we do. People need to work, people need to make money.

"Mr. Allen, please don't turn down this million dollars we're offering you to act in a movie! Please!".

"No, no. I've decided I have no use for money."

That's a matter of perspective. She may have simply been drunk, and people couldn't stop paying attention to her. Not her fault. Don't like her, don't turn your head, but everyone loves a train wreck, everyone loves a spectacle. I hear people complain about celebrities, but never fail to pick up a gossip rag first chance they get to see who's doing who.

No, they MUST have attention. Whether for good or for bad, the nature of the business is that when you stop being noticed, you stop having a career. That's the nature of the beast. If people didn't like it, they wouldn't keep feeding it, but they have made it fat and happy, and so it continues behaving that way with no end in sight.

Or by being more and more bizarre all the time. Because it's an income, and it's something they love. Hell, if I could get paid, and paid well, to do something I love, I'd never stop! I'd always find a way to continue.

Or she was just drunk, and people like to pay attention to drunks, particularly famous celebrity drunks.

Or are you seriously telling me that she is so stupid that she had no idea that acting like a drunk idiot would NOT grab her a few headlines, and that she would instead be treated like 'any other fan'?

The thought "Just one more won't hurt", while seemingly innocent, tends to get a lot of trouble started.

Come on.....Gaga is many things, but stupid is not one of them. ;)

Nope. In this case, she was just drunk, and people were gawking, like they tend to do. It was her celebrity that made others more interested. Instead of a schlub getting tossed out of the game, as happens all the time, it was Stefani Germanotta. It happens.

I liked her when she first started out. Catchy songs, especially on her first album and she was attractive...weird, but just weird enough to still be hot. I think she looked her best in the Poker Face and LoveGame videos.

Now, though...the new music sucks and she's just gotten weirder and weirder, not to mention she just looks grossly skinny now to the point where I'm wondering how much of a factor drugs are in her eccentricity.
