Aw, I wouldn't count us guys out of the "shipping". I was, and still am, a strong proponent of the Spock/Nurse Chapel relationship. Personally, I can't get behind the Spock/Uhura thing. *shrug*

You may remember from ENT that the true relationship between Orion women and their so-called owners is like that German proverb: "The man is the head of the household, but the woman is the neck that turns the head."
Orion women choose whom they want to be "enslaved" to and then run them ragged. Gaila seems like a nice girl -- and I think she might possibly be half human; but I don't think I really want Kirk in that situation.
I haven't voted, because I like both characters and wouldn't want to vote against one or the other. I voted in the men's poll for a different reason. I was kind of fed up with hearing from a few fellows that Gaila was supposedly "chubby," and so I registered a protest vote in favor of her.

Not all of us are. I voted Uhura based mainly on the sequence in the bar. Her relationship with Spock didn't factor.

And I recognize at least 1 Uhura voter who is very strongly against S/U. I just think that most of the guys have more of an emphasis on, er, certain other criteria than the women do.

I just had a thought... if you were to parallel the roomies of Star Trek to that of the musical Wicked, the personalities for the green girl and the human girl get changed over. I can definitely see that at first, Uhura and Gaila probably did not get along so well.
I know Uhura isn't as gritty as Elphaba, but they are both very strong personality types who don't take crap from anybody.

That's not saying that I think Uhura would not be fun on a date, because I think an man could NOT go wrong with either of them. However, Gaila seemd a bit more vivacious and more likely to enjoy herself no matter the situation. Gaila seems like the type of girl who would truly enjoy herself going out with the gang on a date every once in a while, rather than needing every date to be a one-on-one thing.
I suppose I'm saying that I think Uhura may be "just a little" more needy than Gaila. I'm not saying that I think Uhura is high-maintenance, but Gaila is the lower-maintenance of the two.
Of course, we don't have a lot to go on due to Gaila's very limited screen time, but that's my first impression of her, for what that's worth.
