News Kurtzman: Why We Gave Spock A New Adopted Sibling

It just seems odd that Sarek doesn't want Spock to be part of Starfleet, but he has no issue passing his ward off to a Starfleet captain. Surely there are other worthwhile humans and human organizations in the Federation?

I cant find it, but I remember reading that the ST'09 Vulcan Academy was based off art from some other trek production.

Besides, I doubt the Vulcans up and went and just changed how their Acadamy looked after the POD in the timeline.

I haven't read all 8 pages of this thread, but I'm just going to say this: The idea of Spock having a half-sister is not new. It's been done over and over in fanfiction dating back to at least the early 1970s (mentioned in the fanfiction chapter of Star Trek Lives!). I might even have one or two of these in my own collection (I've been collecting 1960s-1990s print 'zines for years, and haven't read all of them yet).

1) One is his son. And he expects his son to follow in Sarek's path and traditions like Sarek had for his father.

2) The other is his Ward - which yes, he did agree to raise at the request of his Government; but still he's not her biological father. Plus (I assume) her parents were Star Fleet officers, so he probably understands she might want to follow in their footsteps.

Those in themselves are most likely a callback/homage to the recently resurrected Spock re-education scene from STIV: TVH (1986):

In what way was that scene “resurrected”? I can't remember ever seeing the movie without it.

Um, I was talking about the fact that Spock himself was effectively 'recently resurrected' after dying (by getting his memories back after the Fal-Tor-Pan ritual in STIII:TSFS - or don't you remember that? ;))

 Ha ha, sorry, I misread your words. Just ignore what I said.

Most likely?! Of course that's what they're based on. I wouldn't call it an homage -- it's an established part of the Vulcan education system.

Yeah - even I will agree with that - I have a LOT of problems with STV:TFF but the character of "Sybok" being Spock's half-brother, and the actor chosen to portray him aren't two of them.

I found him charismatic. In a weird way, his power of personality, the cult of personality he created around himself is very relevant in today's world.

Neither is redesing Klingon make up and we know how that went over ;)

I disagree. When I have discussions about my own life with my parents, they seldom (if ever) are impacted by siblings. Also, maybe Burnham and Spock are estranged, so the last person she wants to talk about is him. Considering that Sarek also feels the same way, Spock would be persona non grata in the family.

II could see Spock and Burnham being estranged. I also think at this point Spock and Sarek haven't spoken to each other in a long time though I forgot how long that went on before "Journey to Babel." Seems to me though all of this would need to be at least mentioned. PLus I want to know what Amanda's feelings are on this. I actually think their is lots of drama they can get out of that family and that doesn't even include Sybok.

In perfect world this show might also be able to offer some insight on Spock's youth and growing up. I just hope they don't diminish the other character's in a effort to prop up Burnham. One issue I had on DS9 with Worf's romance with Dax is they never brought up K'ehler. Though worst example is on "Dukes of Hazard" when they replaced the Bo and Luke for 2 never mentioned before cousins and treated Bo and Luke like they never exisited.

There are several reasons why some characters seem to be "forgotten."

First of all, TV characters are the property of whoever created them. For example, the reason why nobody on TOS ever mentioned anything from City on the Edge of Forever after that episode is because they'd have had to pay Harlan Ellison $$$$$$ to do it - he's extremely possessive of the characters, settings, and concepts he created, and demands to be paid for anyone using them.

That's why Nick Locarno became Tom Paris on Voyager, even though both were played by the same actor and had very similar backstories. You'd think that normally someone would have said, "You seem familiar; you look like Nick Locarno, that notorious guy who got tossed out of the Academy for getting a student killed and then lying about it"... but that character was never mentioned. It's as though Nick Locarno never existed.

As for the DS9 situation, I don't know why they took that route with Worf and Dax; I didn't care that much because I really couldn't stand either of them. Since Alexander was SORAS'd into an adult, there really wasn't much need to mention his mom, I guess.

We do know they should be able use Spock though. I mean the big add was about the show being
10 years before Kirk,Spock and the Enterprise." I do wonder about Sybok. Who has the rights to that character, I wonder. Who knows maybe she was one of the reasons he embraced emotion which got him kicked out. Which does bring up the issue of Sarek not being the greatest of parents and I hope the remember that for the show.
