The answer is staring at us about burnham! She joins s31 and spock and sarek disown her in horror. They'd expose s31 except s31 would kill Amanda if they did. :O

What position and rank would Burnham have by TWOK/TSFS, assuming she is alive?

At least a Captain, possibly an Admiral.

Burnham is hanging out wherever Kirk's nephew, Scotty's sister, and McCoy's daughter Joanna are. It seems none of them could be bothered to show up when Kirk is on trial and demoted, Scotty's nephew being killed, McCoy about to be sentenced to the Federation funny farm for having Spock's katra, and Spock being killed and revived. No wonder the TOS crew never talk about these ungrateful relatives. :P

And that's not even getting into Demora Sulu and her mother.

Even though she got her rank back at the end of S1, Could her mutiny effectively freeze her rank at Commander?

Possibly. Even though Sito Jaxa technically paid her time for the Starfleet Academy scandal she was involved in, it was made clear on 'Lower Decks' that her career probably would have gone nowhere if Picard hadn't offered her a second chance aboard the Enterprise (and even then Picard hid his role in this and severely talked down to her when she was on board, although to be fair this was warmup training to see how she'd handle that Cardassian assignment).

Personally I don't agree with the logic either, just reporting what I heard. The reasoning behind it makes about as much sense as the theories that Star Wars' Mace Windu was Lando's grandfather back in the day.

No, because all charges were dropped. As far as Burnham's record is concerned, the mutiny never took place.

the "give us some medals, a bonus, reinstate Burnham, oh and also that transporter guy with the awesome hair wants a hot groundcar or we're telling the press about the whole genocide thing and putting a Terran in a captain's seat, Cornball" solution.

I've actually seen the equivalent happen in the real world (including my own workplace). Even though all complaints against a certain employee are dropped and nullified due to whatever reason, if it's clear that so and so did actually commit the deed (and Burnham very much did attempt mutiny despite what Starfleet Orwellian rewrites might say), then even though there is no official barrier to advancement the prevailing belief among fellow workers is that this person's career is basically stalled unless someone high up REALLY likes them or they move to another position in another company/agency.

However, in Burnham's case her actions in saving the Federation from committing genocide might save her. But Discovery's own "classified" excuse for everything may prevent this from being widely known...

If there are is any lingering fallout or resentment against Burnham, I'm sure her heroic actions during the war would more than make up for it.

And the fact that some very important people (Sarek, Admiral Cornwell) are on Burnham's side, will certainly help.

No, it was a joke, playing off the fact that Admiral Kennerlly (sp?) was using her for covert/black ops type stuff.

Spock's OWN Parents didn't show up for his Ponn Farr Wedding cerimony in TOS - "Amok Time" (Even though the engagement was by his Parent's arrangement.) ;)

Considering it wasn't a normal human wedding/engagement party and more a lust induced frenzy that delves into fights to the death--yeah, I can see why Sarek would want to spare Amanda having to see that.

If Spock had actually killed Kirk and lived with the lifelong trauma for the next century or so of his life, I can totally see Amanda just walking out on Sarek and Vulcan culture entirely (she was already showing signs of strain dealing with it in 'Journey to Babel').

Um, Star Trek: TNG (and the entire franchise) is a made up thing - so what's your point? Also, TNG had it's own conspiracy themed episodes from time to time during it's run that could definitely have been attributed to 'Section 31'. TNG's "The Pegasus" comes to mind.
