News Kurtzman discusses the Kelvin Timeline appearing on TV

if the kelvin timeline appears, it will be treated as one of those mcu tv shows where they will pretend it is connected to the movies

While it looks it, the story doesn't fit in the Kelvin universe. In Star Trek Into Darkness the Klingons are a mostly unknown threat in 2259 whereas in Disco they've been at open war in 2256-7.

It's never stated their largely unknown. From the dialogue in each film, everyone knows and understands Klingons.

The line in Into Darkness is...

All-out war with the Klingons is inevitable, Mister Kirk. If you ask me, it's already begun. Since we first learned of their existence, the Klingon Empire has conquered and occupied two planets that we know of and fired on our ships half a dozen times. They are coming our way.

The impression the films give me is that the Klingons are a large looming threat but aren't too well-known.

And definitely that there wasn't a war with them that recently ended.

I like Discovery. I like the Kelvin films. I see absolutely no reason for them to sync up, and can only imagine it turning into a convoluted mess which will satisfy nobody.

The Kelvin timeline existed as a clever way to tell new stories with the most iconic characters. Leave it at that.

TREKCORE: With the upcoming Picard series now set after the destruction of Romulus, how much access with that show’s writers room have to other material from the Star Trek films?

ALEX KURTZMAN: Well since I wrote the 2009 film, I’m pretty familiar with it – but in terms of like, legality?

TREKCORE: Yeah, are you allowed to explore the film stuff, rights-wise?

KURTZMAN: I think we’ll see over the next couple of months. It’s a conversation. Obviously, it would be great; it’s all canon, right? So it’d be great to figure out a way to be consistent.

That quote is clearly not about the Kelvin TL I think. The interviewer seems to be asking about other movies - and if they can be referenced within the Picard show and other Trek TV.

I take that to basically mean they're grappling with whether they're going to be allowed to reference things in the pre-Kelvin movies in the Picard show. Probably most explicitly the TNG movies, because there's little reason to bring in plot elements from the TOS movies.

His notion that STD is really comparable to a theatrical movie is...cute.

Alex, many, many times more people have paid to see the Abrams movies than currently watch or will ever watch STD. There are reasons for that.

I wonder if the new Nickelodean animated series will be an opportunity to pick up the Kelvin-verse?

It's a little late for that, especially since the last anyone heard, Paramount were planning a rated-R Trek movie.

But who knows anymore? It could end a Real Ghostbusters situation where the series loosely continues on from the movies, but the movies ignore them.

I have always wanted to see the Kelvinverse comics animated -- an AOS version of TAS. Some are routine retread of old TOS eps, updated for the new reality, but others are excellent.

They should've planned for it 10 years ago, right after ST2009. Might've built the audience between the tentpole films. Oh well!

Someone liked the idea enough they made concept art.

My feeling though is that if the Kelvin timeline is officially a dead duck and the movies get relaunched/rebooted (either in prime timeline or else a new strain of the cinema side of the franchise), then it leaves that whole 'universe' ripe for exploration on TV as a kind of thing unto itself. An animated adaptation would be perfect for this, as it could stand somewhat individually alongside the other TV shows, and still feature the Kelvin-verse Enterprise crew (as a cartoon, they wouldn't necessarily need the original actors, merely voice actors who can deliver similar performances while still having scope to take the characters somewhere the movies didn't.)

And this may or may not be controversial... but it'd also allow them to keep using Chekhov, as (presumably) the uneasiness of recasting that role on film wouldn't apply to a voice actor bringing a new interpretation to a cartoon version of the role...

As far as I see it, it's a win/win. Kelvin timeline fans get a continuation of those characters, meanwhile, the movie series goes for a fresh new take unreliant on the Kelvin universe continuity. Yes it might be sad to lose that hook of continuous link in the movies that has been present from 1979 to 2016 (the Kelvin timeline maintaining that faith through the use of Prime Spock). But maybe it's time to cut the cord on that, and genuinely approach the movies with a fresh perspective and new blood, as their own separate entity.

So, this is an opinion on Screen Rant:

I do wonder if there are any plans down the line to eventually unify all Treks in some sort of grand scheme, whatever it might be.

Granted that, as of now, the new Picard series is to be set post-Romulus.

Still....

There was so much emphasis on Spock's work to re-unite the Vulcans and Romulans. They hammered away at that. I have not been able to get through 'Captain's Blood' yet, because of being so tired of the Unification stuff.

So....

Are they eventually going to re-set the timeline, bring back Romulus, and have Spock finally achieve the re-unification?

The destruction of Romulus blew away the largest part of Spock's life work in his later years.

Even though Leonard Nimoy has passed on, I'm wondering if we have seen the last of Prime Spock. It just seems like a giant loose end for such a major character in Trek.

I never cared for Spock's later years to be so devoted to re-unification that most everything else was very secondary. But, to have it that way and then destroy Romulus and have no good closure....that doesn't sit well.

Every time I read "Re-set the timeline" or "restore the timeline" I feel one of my neurons dying and its last words through the agony being "it is a f**king quantum reality parallel to prime, there is no restoring the timeline they'd only create another reality"

I have this idea of some technobabble breach of realities where Kelvinverse and Prime meet. After a ridiculous series of events unfolds, Q pops in and ... everything stops. Then, in a scene that splits the fanbase in two, he breaks the forth wall, turns to the camera and says:

"I don't know about you, but I preferred it when things were simpler. And, I think you did too. Whatever you might think ... I really do have your best intentions at heart... *snigger"" ... *snap*

Beyond that, I haven't ironed out any details. The Kelvinverse was popular but there's a definite full stop on it since the breakdown of ST4. I'm not much of a fan of what they're doing in Discovery, but let's just stick with the Prime timeline and be done with it.
