News Killjoys and Ant-Man and the Wasp's Hannah John-Kamen to Play Red Sonja in New Movie

She doesn't seem to be in the role, anymore, if the article I posted a while back is accurate. Millennium has been awfully silent even since this news came out which makes me suspect it is right. I suspect the production is a mess behind the scenes and Hannah thought better of her career than to wait on a film that can't get into gear.

The GA Hawkgirl is the one who got resurrected, so I guess only Hawkwoman was ever a redhead.
It's complicated
GA Hawkgirl Brunette
SA Hawkgirl Redhead
CRISIS!!!!

Buncha retcons

Yeah but think of The Maltese Falcon, the Bogart film was the third time, I believe. Right now, Hannah leaving is speculative as far as I believe. One rumor heavy website posted the news, everything else is just copy and paste. So far as she is concerned, Hannah could have decided with the change of director with so little having happened so far that she was better off heading to greener pastures. All guess work until Millennium or someone else actually connected to the film says something.
Reports say both she and the director have left the project and it's back in development hell where it has been for 12 years.......so pitchforks down for now.

Indeed, it's hard to say they're back to the starting line when they never seem to ever get going on this. Jaimie Alexander once posted about looking at the script but she clearly didn't take up any offers as I'm sure Millennium would have mentioned adding her to the cast.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Bassett rewrite the script if offers are being tuned down for the current one or the film just disappears for another decade which I'd put better odds on.

I just looked up Bassett and Wikipedia, and apparently she's English, so she must be here on a Visa, and I think I've seen references to the government being pretty strict when it comes to letting people here on Visas come and go from the US.

5'6" and 120 lbs?

[Roadhouse] I thought you'd be bigger. [/Roadhouse]

I'm sure she's a fine actress, but this is a role for those Julie Strain types.

Hugh Jackman is nearly a foot taller than Wolverine and a hell of a lot better-looking, but people accepted him in the role. They're casting actors, not cover models, so there are more important things than matching the look.

Besides, nobody who's seen Hannah John-Kamen in Killjoys would have any doubt that she's a superb choice to play a fierce warrior woman. Size matters not, young Jedi.

Bassett started shooting Red Sonja last Monday but here's a small chat from her Instagram where she gives a couple ideas of what she's up to with the movie.

This film is still being handled low key. I guess after all the drama and money spent in the last three years or so they are just keeping their heads down and getting the movie done. They do have a new actress for Red Sonja but no word who. I wouldn't mind seeing Wallis Day in the part.

I wonder if there's a market for this kind of movie anymore even if it was done really well. Or for that matter if there ever was, outside of Conan and Scorpion King it seems strictly B-movie level even back in the 80s heyday. There's Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones but those don't seem quite the same as classic "Sword and Sorcery" with a single hero.

Granted I like those B-movie stories, if they keep budget and expectations in check it might work. I think if they go for something mainstream and PG-13 it's not going to work, they need to cater to the specific people who would like a movie like this. Lord knows we could use movies in this genre with some bite that don't look like they were filmed on a cheap digital camcorder in someone's back yard.

As with any film, it depends on the story they tell. I doubt a bog standard Sonja vs wizard/warrior villain will be all that interesting. If they make something with more mystery, intrigue, adventure where Sonja has more to do than swing a sword they could have some success but I'm not holding my breath.

I suspect this film is from folks trying a desperate grab some of that sweet comic book movie money Marvel has been making, as if just because something is a comic book in origin it will make money. They should have just done an animated feature to test the waters with the property. Something in the vein of Harley Quinn. Action, violence, comedy, adventuring across the Hyborian world.

I looked up the actor to see if there was much in the way of resemblance.

Jesus...Hollywood is perennially capable of screwing up a free lunch.
