Kate Mulgrew's decision to not have a romance

She didn't really offer him sex, she demanded it. Which freaked him out and engulfed him in performance anxiety. She should have proceeded with her assimilation plans, he would have given it up in the end.

Harry Kim is like the dog chasing the car. He looks dumb, has virtually no chance of catching it and if he does, he has no idea what to do with it.

It's really telling that on that episode where they all have nightmares, Kim's is himself getting raped by Seven. Harry Kim is the anti-sex.

There is no way that the doctor and Janeway didn't each pull Tom and harry aside to say "DON'T FUCK THE BORG!!!"

At that point, she couldn't eat solid food, so you can't convince me that what plumbing she had that was co-opted or removed by the Borg was in any semblance of working order.

It was always ridiculous to ever write her as a sexual being with out solving all her problems as a human being first.

I honestly would have liked it better if they kept her in that half Borg outfit she wore in the Gift... then they could have various parts able to be removed gradually as something of a slow progression towards her getting her humanity back. But that would have suggested a well thought out plan beyond "Borg babe in catsuit! Let's screw with Harry!"

But as stated on the show she apparently had no issues with her "plumbing" as it were. The Doctor even not so subtly encouraged her to procreate by showing her pictures of 8472 mating. I actually wonder how big a database the Doc has dedicated to alien porn.

7 was just trying to fit in. She had figured out the sex thing was a big deal to her species, the species she had been forcibly reinvented as, so she intended to do it. She was like an ex-pat reveling in the shorthand of her native land because she thought that made her human.

It was safer for Kim to wait till season seven when he became more padded like a mass of marshmallows and goose feather pillows.

I think that it worked well. Even though there wasn't a romance between her and any (certain) members of her crew, there was still a lot of tension between Janeway and Chakotay, which kept us all asking "Will they...?" for years.

Sure, it would have been nice for there to have been a greater acknowledgement of the attraction between those two characters, but I can respect the decision not to, because it showed the other great aspects of Janeway's character. We saw what a great leader Janeway was as well as her intelligence when it came to strategy.
Definitely. I was a huge Janeway/Chakotay shipper, and even though I was disappointed that they didn't get together... it fit her character that she didn't get involved with anyone in her crew.

It wouldn't have been right or professional of her to do so. She had too much respect for them and vice versa for anything of the sort to have happened.

She was seen as a good leader and one that stood a chance against those who tried to fight against her ship and her crew.

But they wouldn't let any of the characters or actors loose.

I never really noticed any sexual tension between Chakotay and Janeway until that episode. Because Chakotay was just perfectly behaved, and mystical and reserved and philosophical all the time.

So it seemed out of left field when it happened.

Harry Kim was straight laced, clean cut kid who didn't push the envelope, yet hits on Seven of Nine to see what she would do.

So Seven says 'Ok, take off your damn clothes,'

Ok, Kim, now what? Didn't it look like an out place thing for his character to do, considering he backed off quickly?

I just read there was a standing edict from the producers that the human characters of Voyager had to be intentionally bland so the aliens would stand out.

I think Wang was right . I had the feeling if they let actors loose with their characters at least for a moment, we would have seen some real tension, sexual and socially and story wise.

So much potential.

J and C had plenty of tension, mainly coming from C who clearly fancied her. I'll leave it to a J/C'er to list the incidents, they were overt IMO and not dependent on subtext.

Because Chakotay was just perfectly behaved, and mystical and reserved and philosophical all the time.

On my planet we call that boring.

kim didn't hit on Seven. He wanted to hit on her, he planned to hit on her... But she made a pass at the lad before he could get a word out... Or did he get as far as suggesting that at some time in the distant future that they have a platonic date to see if they compatible on some level?

Kim chose to be emasculated.

Some guys don't like it when the girls on top.

(Some guys are idiots.)

He could ave enjoyed the ride, but unfortunately Kim was too upset that since wasn't the Uboat captain that he didn't know where his battle stations were as Seven started screaming 'Dive! Dive! Dive!"

After seeing a video clip of it, I don't know what Harry was trying do;

It looked like a little of both. Like he was trying to set up a situation where he could get closer to Seven. He tried to manipulate the situation a little.

Low lights, sligh smile, 'hey let's go the holodeck later and I'll show you..'

It was like he moved wayyy to fast before he was prepared to know what to do.

And Seven doesn't help it any. She looked particulaly curvy. I mean really, really curvy. And she didn't realize she looked curvy.

Which made the scene so hot, for goodness's sake.

Even Data and Tasha did it on the spurr of a moment. And it looked like fun

This is what I think happened. Harry let slip to Tom or some other dude that he thought 7 was hot, got ribbed for it and was dared to actually make a move. It still seems very out of character considering he was so fumbling even talking to other women he fancied and 7 was scary so I suspect something more was at stake.. either a bet or feeling very humiliated in front of male peers he wanted to impress. Really, he did pretty good as far as being direct enough to get his intentions across.. but winning for him was going to the holodeck, not having sex in a public sitting room on Voyager 2 minutes after trying to set a mood.
