Karl Urban -- blond or brunet?

Well now... my sister got tired of trying to get me to join LiveJournal, so she made up an account for me named trampledamage (I like elephants and I'm known for my diplomatic approach to arguments ). She did a google search for an elephant to go with it and found this one. He's been with me ever since :)

If you're really interested / bored at work I have a gallery on my profile here of all my avatars so you can see what the elephant's been up to. (Except this one because I forgot until now!)

I'm currently thinking of doing one of him peeking out of the door of the TARDIS.

Just tossing in my love of Suit Porn and Broad Shoulders.

*lusty sigh* I so love this thread. I have nothing intellectual to say and nothing of value to add.

:p

Thanks for assuring me that I'm not alone, ladies... :)

trampledamage, I feel very silly now-- based on your explanation, is your name supposed to be trample damage? Because I have always read it as trampled a mage. And I always wondered who the poor mage was...

Yeah, it's trample damage. :)

Don't worry it's not just you who reads it as trampled a mage - a couple of people here have asked, and there's another forum I'm a member of where the admin always read it as trampled mage and only realised it was wrong when he tried to search for my name one time

This Christmas I'm going to see if I can come up with a "Trampled a Magi" avatar

EDIT: Too much talk, no pictures - I'd better go find some ;)

Yes please.
(Should I also assume I should only discuss Karl Porn with you and never politics?)

Ok. I am gonna say something I've been thinking but afraid to verbalize.

(This is so not politically correct.)

**Whispering** Am I the only one doesn't really like FYDM because of all the gay fan art they put up?

Please understand... the big Seinfeld "not that there's anything wrong with that" applies...

...I've been in the entertainment industry too long to be homophobic. I've lived with gay men, had crushes on gay men, flirted with gay men (they are GREAT to flirt with -- fun cause you know there is a connection, yet nothing will happen), I am photographing a gay wedding in a couple weeks, etc etc
...but... the fan art (or gay-related comments) just totally turn me off. Not the fantasy I am going for.
And it seems to be 90% of the stuff over there....

...I'm just sayin.

(slinks away in a slimy pool of Political Incorrectness...)

.

On another note:

My husband is pissing me off.

I think I need to watch The Price of Milk again.

mariajl, I will admit having that same problem when reading fanfiction (not only for Star Trek, but for many of the fandoms I enjoy). It's just hard for me to relate to it; I can relate with male characters under most circumstances, but when romance is involved, I like for there to be a female character on which I can project myself and seek wish fulfillment. :) Based on what seems to be a large portion of "shippers" being female and supporting a male/male couple in Trek fandom, it seems I'm in the minority. It makes me wonder if I'm immature. I have tried to research the psychology behind a preference for slash, but I haven't found much in the way of substantial literature on it.

And don't feel alone on the second count, either: my husband pisses me off all the time. :) He's very Spock-ish, which is fun in theory, and not always so much in person. Honestly, I must verbally remind him to smile when people make eye contact with him because my friends and family are concerned they've offended the man when he offers no expression in greeting.

Are you saying it seems to you that most women dont' mind the male/male fan stuff?
That seems odd to me.

Ok. Price of Milk isn't doing it for me today. I need to watch it when I am in a light mood.
The surrealistic aspects just go a bit too much over the top for me. And seem inconsistent. Maybe I just don't' get it.

It depends on what parts of the intarwebs you're frequenting, I guess. Over on ontd_startrek (livejournal community), for example, the ladies are all about the slash. It seems that "het" is not looked upon favorably by many of the active members. In fact, I sometimes feel that Spock/Uhura is the only couple that it's not okay to support. :( It's a community where most things are taken in good humor, however, so it's not an all-out shipper war.

If you search Star Trek fanfiction archives by pairings, more stories come up for male/male pairings; however, that may be due to the fact that there aren't many strong female characters from which to choose. Overall, it seems to me not only that most women don't mind m/m in many fandoms, but actually tend to prefer it. Another fandom where I've observed this to be especially prevalent is The Lord of the Rings, which also has a notable shortage of central female characters.

ETA: Hope I am not stepping on any toes here; I definitely bear no intention of offending or criticizing anyone's preferences, fanfiction or otherwise... :) Just something I've noticed!

Maria - watch Bourne Supremacy :)

If you like spy thrillers then the whole movie is worth it, otherwise just fast forward to Karl's scenes - he's in it about three times for about 15 minutes each time. And is awesome cool throughout!

Oh, and here have a photo of Karl tinkering in your garage... :p

and one from Bourne Surpremacy, in case you need convincing

Re: fanfiction - I've never understood the prevalence of male on male pairings especially since fanfiction is a very female dominated world.

Surely for the wish-fulfillment aspect of fan-fiction you need your man to be with a girl?

 Whenever I write it, I'm trying to tell a story that would fit within the TV series, so I'm not really your standard fan-ficcer. Speaking of, if any of you are looking for something to read, the folks who frequent our own fan-fiction forum here on the BBS are great writers and there's some very good stories down there, ones that I like to read - that are like good published Trek Lit.

I caved and put in Star Trek for the 647th time.
He just came out of the bathroom.

I don't have Bourne Supremacy on DVD or on streaming netflix... but I have seen it. He looks purty in that. And a total badboy in an "I want to do you -- but even more I want to check you for concealed weapons" way.
The photographer in me loves the lighting in the second pic.

I am still floored that so many women seem to prefer the male/male fanfiction.
Are we sure these women are hetero themselves? I mean, that would explain to me why they have a different couples preference.
Cause I don't get it.

I wish I could remember where I saw it, but sometime in the last couple of years I read a very thoughtful, well-written article on the slash fanfiction phenomenon. It offered the theory that it’s so popular because it's a way for female writers to not have to see their crushes with another woman, which ruins the fantasy (I'm sure we've all been there; hey, I'm the first one to admit that I've hated the TOC episode "Shore Leave" for years because they paired McCoy up with a woman who wasn't me--although I was only about 10 years old the first time I thought that ). Seeing them with another man, though, isn't quite as threatening, and that's where the age-old female fantasy that they are the only woman who can change or "turn" a man comes in. Whether it's true or not, I thought it was a fascinating and logical explanation. I wish I had bookmarked the article!

Off-topic but not really: It's probably very similar to what happened with the show "Bonanza"--they kept trying to pair up the Cartwright boys with women, but viewers (mostly female) would complain so loudly that they ended up killing them off or sending them away. They tried to marry off Adam (sigh--another of my big crushes...RIP Pernell Roberts) and actually had a three-episode arc that I believe was supposed to lead up to an honest-to-gosh Cartwright wedding, but there were too many complaints and producers winky-wanked the scripts so Adam's fiancee Laura (played by Kathie Brown) ended up with cousin Will (Guy Williams), who was conveniently leaving the show after a multi-episode visit to the Ponderosa.

Anyway, back on topic: I’m in the same court as you ladies; I stay away from the m/m stuff, because it doesn’t appeal to me (I’m still having flashbacks to a Karl Urban/Vin Diesel fic I read out of curiosity not long ago--sorry, but that stuff is creepy; not because of the sex itself, but because it seems like an incredible invasion of privacy to me when people write slash about a real actor, rather than the character he portrays, but that's my own hangup). I personally like my McCoy heterosexual so I can enjoy my fantasies and write my own little squirrelly fanfics that shall never see the light of day. But I’m glad fans of other McCoy pairings have outlets where they can see their particular fantasies about him come to life as well.

And P.S. mariajl and Tribbles, on the husband-pissing-me-off thing: that's when my squirrelly fanfics come in handy! Luckily, the pissing-off doesn't happen often, but when it does, I can get pages and pages of stuff written as I turn our good doctor into the perfect--if cranky--life partner. Hmm...maybe I could be a much more prolific writer if I picked fights with Mr_Whatsit more often... :guffaw:

Interesting theory... but I still don't get it.
I mean, if I am into a guy and want to fantasize about him in a sexy way, I sure don't imagine it with him thinking "Wow, she's great... if only she had a penis."

More randomness that could get me in trouble:
Does anyone else here look at the other threads and just want to write response after response saying "You do know it's just a movie... right?"

(***runs and hides and ducks for cover***)

(And, yeah... I've seen all TOS eps... and all NG eps... and all ENT eps... and many Voyager and DS9... and all the movies....)

People do post that response with some regularity, but it never seems to change anything much, least of all those to whom it's directed.
