Just a STRANGE Movie

My wife dragged me to "Mamma Mia!! the Movie"...I sat through it and was seen leaving the theater by a co-worker... I'll probably have to turn in my "Guy Card" for that sin... Next Summer she will be dragged to "Star Trek" as part of my revenge!!

Anyway, the film just seemed to be really several disconnected events tossed together with music..not really fun for me..

Kinda Like "Rocky Horror"..

Paprika, it's a movie about a dream thief, i thought i was having an acid flashback about halfway through the movie
you mean the anime right ? I loved it!

End of Evangelion was bizarre, even after I had it all explained to me it still is.

yeah, hell, the cover looks like a bad acid trip

and no one has mention eXistenZ yet?

Count me in with Zardoz.

I'm probably in the minority here, but, I would add Wizards. I guess I'm not geeky enough to appreciate it.

Oh, and Dreamscape. With both of those I got to the end and just thought.... oooooohkay.

IMO, any movie made by Andriy Tarkovsky.

I watched Stalker not long ago. That was pretty strange; however, I found it quite unsatisfying as well. I would have preferred more emphasis on the sci-fi mystery angle and less on the hand-wringing about human nature. My default position in these cases where I don't really get the film is just to assume that my brain isn't big enough and that the point flew over my head. Still, Stalker felt pretty shallow to me, despite it's incredibly portentous style. But rambling aside, it was indeed strange and had some nice eerie sequences.

But the great-granddaddy and master of strangeness is Federico Fellini. Lynch wishes he was as weird and as artful as Fellini. Check out
Satyricon, La Dolce Vita, and most of all 81/2.

Amarcord is one of my favourites. The man in a tree shouting "I want a woman" being fetched by a midget nun is one image that will remain with me until I die.

Strange non-mainstream movies that made the biggest impression on me:

2001: A Space Odyssey -- anything smaller than a cinema screen kills it IMO. The equivalent of the Total Perspective Vortex from HHGTTG for me.

Blade Runner -- ditto; total immersion is required.

Koyaanisqatsi -- ditto; non-fiction but an incredible experience which probably wouldn't have the same effect without the Philip Glass score.

Eraserhead -- completely put me off any desire to procreate the species.

Solaris(1972) -- mesmerising.

I agree with Temis that pretty any movie by Peter Greenaway (from The Draughtsman's Contract to Prospero's Books) and many by Ken Russell (I particularly like Savage Messiah) will generally blow your mind and/or make you wonder just what was the director smoking. I suggest stearing clear of Russell's Lisztomania unless you really need to see Rick Wakeman's portayal of the god Thor, or to hear Roger Daltrey utter the unforgettable line "Piss off, Brahms."

I nearly forgot to mention -- just about any film not filmed in the English language can seem strange -- maybe this is to be expected given the assumption of the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis.

I like the idea of Blade Runner being strange and non-mainstream. It made the top 20 best of all time, yet again, in the last (of the endless) movie polls.

A friend and I went to Orlando to hang out with another friend of ours (from film school) and his wife. My friend suggested I Netflix "Ice Pirates" (yes, with Robert Urich) since they hadn't seen it in years and I never had. (The wife hadn't either, obviously.) :)

As soon as I put the DVD in the player and the menu with the cheesy music came up, my friend put head in hands and asked, "What have I done?!?!"

We didn't even finish it. My friend's wife fell asleep and my friends and I just sat there, wondering what drugs these filmmakers were taking.

I don't know, whille Blade Runner has lots of critical support, it's still mostly a cult following IMO. I think it's gotten more mainstream over the years since it's release, but I'm not sure we're there yet.

Also, I mentioned Twin Peaks earlier, and just wanted to add that all the episodes (except the pilot for some ungodly reason) can be watched over at cbs.com, owning the dvds, I tend to forget :)

Stole most if it's ideas? :wtf:

The films were nothing alike....at all.

Right, right, and John McCain wouldn't be a George W. repeat. And for the record, these are the first ever negative comments I've ever seen about Dark City. What a fantastic film.

I guess crack is making a comeback

And which part of my statement brought that on? If it's the bit about McCain and W, I'll gladly take this to PMs. If it's about Dark City being a fantastic film, I will defend it. If it's about The Matrix heavily borrowing from Dark City -- even down to using some of its sets -- I will support that, as well.

But shame on you for the unnecessary crack comment. I've known people who have had their entire lives ruined by drugs and would never touch the stuff, and I said nothing that warranted such a rude and blunt response accusing me, even sarcastically, of drug abuse. At worst, I made a political comment you disagreed with. If that's what pissed you off so much, you know, hit me back with an anti-liberal comment. I don't care about that in the least. But when someone hits you, in some unknown (to them) way, above the belt, don't aim below theirs.

I'm not pissed at all.
In fact quite the opposite, I'm sitting here laughing at your comments.

How mature. And what a comprehensive response! Let me know when you hit double digits; we can talk like adults then.
How lucky for you, I hit double digits last week!!

PKerr & Ben Sisko3, the both of you need to take this to PM, as it's off topic and quite out of place here in this forum.

:vulcan:

At this point, you won't be getting anything else out of me. Good day.

You have no idea how happy that makes me. :guffaw:

If it makes you happy enough to start creatively editing my posts while replying to me, then baby, I'm here to make you miserable. What buttons of yours do you want me to push next? I can go at this all day.

Aren't you supposed to be pouting in a corner somewhere?

The Matrix Worldwide: $460,379,930
Dark City Worldwide: $27,200,316

Obviously I'm not the only one that thought Dark City sucked.

Obviously the Titanic in More peoples eyes.
Not mine.

You're comparing 2 different genres and 2 different ratings

In this case both are sci-Fi and had an R rating.

Thank you for helping me make my point.
