Jupiter Ascending

I assume more fuel would be consumed while submerged -- the water resistance would be greater -- so another reason not to do so if stealth isn't a consideration.

After all the bad reviews, I was a bit hesitant as to whether I should go see this in a theater, but I should never have doubted the Wachowskis: "Jupiter Ascending" is a ton of fun!

Sure, it's a bit silly. The animal hybrid characters all look super goofy, Eddie Redmayne's acting is cheesy, and some of the exposition-heavy dialogue is pretty laughable. But it's also a gorgeous, stunningly ambitious movie that confidently builds a massive, fascinating universe and never feels like it's holding back. It has spectacular action scenes (seriously - they're stunning!), outlandish alien creatures, and cool spaceships. There's a space station in the eye of Jupiter's big storm!

On top of that, it has two very likeable leads and even the odd philosophical thought. What more can you ask from a space opera?

(my rating: 8/10)

Add me to those who loved this movie. It could've used another half-hour or so to actually flesh out the plot and give the characters some depth, but it still was a pretty good movie.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I don't know that I "loved" it, but every sci-fi movie you see doesn't need to have a great story like Star Trek Into..... no, wait...

Every movie you go see doesn't need to have a great story like ST09.... no wait...

Screw it, it was a fun ride and the popcorn was good. :D

I agree she's shirking her responsibilities right now. At minimum, she needs to work out a way to keep the Earth safe past her death. At this point, her siblings can just wait for her death and make a deal (using legitimate or illegitimate means) with whichever relative they decide is her heir.

To that end, she might have to consider being like this guy and start taking the immortality treatment (or one like it, but not like it) so that she can be alive to fight off her extraterrestrial siblings and foil whatever plots they want to accomplish with Earth.

^Notice I said 'or one not like it-maybe there's a substance on Earth or in space not yet discovered that can serve the purpose without culling a human being.

Isn't she only in a dress once?

She wore a pink dress with the Kalique Abrasax, a black dress with the Titus Abrasax, and a white dress with flowers at the wedding with Titus Abrasax.

About the Abrasax, at times it's hard to figure who the real villain is. Kalique seemed to be on Titus' side and really for the middle of the movie he took center stage, But now she's basically the winner of their little contest by default. If there were to have been sequels I hope that Jupiter would take down the other two siblings.

Did you say she was shirking her duties?

They she already has a bunch of the stuff. She might need to keep a few viles to fight the good fight. The culling has already taken place for those poor lost souls.

She owns a lot of planets and if those planets are not yielding their crops then they are worthless and she has personally crashed the Galactic economy.

Was this a Sci Fi? a space opera? A dark fantasy in space?

It was a mess of ideas covering a very pedestrian capture/rescue plot that's repeated about three times. The Wachowskis seem to have thrown several thousand ideas together during the pre production stage, and then basically not cut a single one of them before they shot the damn thing which is a shame as there aren't nearly enough space operas out there

Which is pretty much how Lucas made Star Wars, but in the end Jupiter Ascending is a space opera. It's closer to The 5th Element than Guardians Of The Galaxy.

I'd disagree on the SW front, ok it might have been down to Lucus not having the budget to put everything on screen but what makes Star Wars great is its simplicity. By contrast Jupiter Ascending struggles under the weight of an entire universe that, rather than being introduced gradually, is dumped on our shoulders from the get go.

Of course it might have been salvagable if the script had been better, and the plot more than Jupiter is captured/ Caine saves her...repeat. It's not terrible, it looks great and it isn't boring but its not a film I think I'll ever rewatch.

I just watched this for the first time this morning and I really liked it. I'll admit, it might not have had the most original story, but I loved the universe and designs. It looked gorgeous with some really great ship, tech and lots of cool looking aliens. I loved all of the stuff with the Abraxes and the Aegis and all of the universe building stuff that we got. I would absolutely love to see this universe continued in some form, another movie, comics, novels, anything. I don't think there would be any way to keep the huge scope that I loved in the movie so much on a TV series, so that is probably the one medium I would hesitate to want, although I guess it could work in animation but that would be about it.
I thought the whole cast was great, and after this I would love to see Mila Kunis in a Star Wars, Marvel, or Star Trek movie. As much as I love the big franchises, it was nice to see a big sci-fi action movie like this that was completely original.
SEAN BEAN DIDIN'T DIE!

It has a kind of Dune meets Galifrey look that I like--ships with no physical connections at all. Space Rococo
