JRPG enthusiasts: When (if ever) did Square 'fall off' for you?

Oh, hell yeah - love MGS - and yeah, it's totally convoluted, melodramatic, and downright stupid at times - but God help me, I love it. It's one of those series that I won't even argue with people if they dislike it because I can totally see why - it just works perfectly for me.

:techman::techman::techman:

That's... so my exact same philosophy on MGS!

Vice City Stories was a fantastic game I thought, proving that the PSP is capable of deep gameplay. TBH, I think the problems come when they release ports onto the platform which are basically the same version as the original only with loads of functionality removed.

If it's a straight PSP game, I expect it to be very good.

VCS was the better of the two, but LCS was still a perfectly servicable game, though Chinatown Wars was pretty notably dull.

I've never played CW but GameSpot gave it a very strong score. Then again, a.) that doesn't really mean anything; b.) I recall a lot of commenters at the time remarking on the absurdity of it.

Crisis Core is a good example to use for JRPGs on the PSP, I actually bought a PSP for that game and I wasn't disappointed, perhaps handhelds are where SE should stick to making JRPGs (speaking of which has anyone played the 4 heroes of light for the DS?)

Yeah, I don't so much trust video game sites or news media ever since they told me how awesome the Wii was and how NOT awesome the Wii turned out to be. I bought one on release and had it sold off within 6 months.

Nope, but damn if I don't want to. Money has been super-tight for the past few months and it won't be letting up for a while longer but it's on my list.

I haven't played 4 Heroes, but have heard pretty disappointing things about it from those who have. I'll proabably give it a shot some time, but I'm in no rush. CC was a good example of a fun JRPG and you may be on to something with keeping them on handhelds - it seems to be a better fit for them in this day and age.

I like the Wii, personally. I don't love it (prefer my PS3) but it accomplishes its goals well enough for me. See, I don't buy many games at all, so I've really just stuck with a few titles I knew I could trust with both consoles and it's been fine and dandy.

Comparing the two consoles' libraries, though, it's no contest.

Speaking of games that have the initials CC, who else here thought that Crystal Chronicles set the genre back 10 years? What a piece of junk...

I loathe that game but I wouldn't say it set anything back. Considering it was only a modest success sales-wise (despite the series it's created, go figure) and only its own games have really copied the formula, I've safely avoided that dren ever since.

I had all three consoles, but just cut it down to the 2 big ones after selling my Wii. Between the two of them, it's all the best titles in gaming and there's not a second that I miss my Wii. Games like Mario and Zelda just don't do anything for me any more.

Yeah, it didn't set anything back - I was being melodramatic - but I was super pissed when I played it - just awful.

I'd rather they have a whole separate sub-section of their own for the Nintendo platform. Better that so that we're insulated from sh1te like Crystal Chronicles and they can't bastardise any of the core games.

Ah, if you're no longer interested in those titles then the Wii is totally unnecessary for you, no doubt.

Mario has never been the biggest thing for me although I do enjoy the series. Zelda, though... I'm really big on Zelda. It's another of my top five series. It turned 25 today, too!

didn't the original Crystal Chronicles require you to have 3 friends with Gameboy Advances and and the GBA to Gamecube link cable to beat?

I think you could have beaten it without all that, but it would have helped to have the help. I don't know because I couldn't play that POS very long. Unwrapping the case was more fun than the game itself was.

As for Zelda, I used to like it and I played it up to the last release on the Wii, but I really just didn't enjoy that one at all. It's the same game every time with a mildly different setting and story. You know when you find the hookshot, you'll have to use it to beat the boss of that dungeon... I know a lot of games have the same formulas in all their various iterations, but for some reason Zelda's really has just reached its limit for me.

Well, like we both say for MGS, I don't argue with those that dislike Zelda. You're absolutely right, but dammit, I still like it. :p
