JRPG enthusiasts: When (if ever) did Square 'fall off' for you?

Xenogears has a long and tenuous history regarding a lack of presence in Europe so I wish you luck on that one. I truly do.

Hope you like it, should you get it. I'll tell you what, though; if all else fails, ask me once it looks certain you'll never get it on the PS store and I'll ship you an NTSC PlayStation and a copy of the game for free. I have a couple of both!

That's incredibly generous mate. :)

I'll keep you posted, although I'll also have a looksie to see if I can grab an emulated version as well.

Just need to find the time to fit in some more heavy-duty RPG-gaming!

indeed
Xenogears is probably one of the most controversial games from the last decade. It's my personal absolute favorite, and no matter how much it's worth I'm never selling it :P
in good condition they're going for $50+ on ebay

Emulation is always a perfectly fine avenue in these cases, too, true.

Oh hey, glad to see a fellow fan.

Well it looks as though there is an emulated version available. I can get it on my Galaxy's PSX emulator.

However, I will wait and see whether it turns up on the EU store first.

Oh hey, glad to see a fellow fan.

yeah!
it's a really fantastic game, and it never gets old
I absolutely love the battle system, and all the characters are fantastic. (Except Chu Chu . . . nobody likes Chu Chu)
The story is amazing, and the twists and turns and revelations never lose their impact. The Gears are awesome.

sure, it starts off with one of the biggest tropes ever (amnesiac protagonist) but it's done well

it's a Must Play for anyone who likes RPGs :D

Sweet! G'luck!

Oh come on, Chu Chu is the best character...

Yeah, it's got a great cast and the revelations are ridiculously good. Not just by gaming standards, either.

I've lost a couple of people over the years who started it, saw the amnesiac trope, got a few hours in, didn't get it and shut it off. But I've landed plenty of fans who managed to stick with it, too.

Just had a quick look out of interest on eBay (UK version) - only one UK seller, £130!

Erm.....no.

Definitely waiting for a EU store release (or Emu).

The only bit of Xenogears I was able to play was the demo that came with Parasite Eve and that was the 45 minute (uncensored) opening cutscene and about 5 minutes worth of game play followed by about 15 minutes of random snips of scenes from the rest of the game

Oh, Parasite Eve - at least the first one - was fucking awesome. I'm hoping they actually do some justice with 3rd Birthday.

I'm familiar with that demo. A strange albeit understandable attempt at earning fans, that.

The game is so freaking long and its plot doesn't truly heat up for so long that I can't blame them for doing it that way.

I haven't heard much about 3rd birthday other than it's going to be a PSP title, as for PE2, it was epic, if it wasn't for the water-tower part and the "up is all ways forward down is all ways backward and left & right turn" control scheme I think the game would have been better reviewed

Yeah, that water tower bit is where PE2 lost me. I haven't heard much more than you about 3rd Birthday, but I do think PE3 deserves better than a PSP game... but whatever. I'll take what I can get.

Parasite Eve was another fantastic-looking game.

I remember getting an import copy of that back in the day. When we first loaded it up it was only in B&W until we managed to do something that eventually led to it being in colour!

lol - I first played PE in Japanese because I hadn't heard any plans to bring it over here (America) at the time and I had a system modded to play Japanese games. My understanding of Japanese is pretty decent, but nowhere near the level of understanding words like mitochondria...

Edit - actually, that's a bad example because mitochondria is one of the few words I did understand in the Japanese because it was "mitokondoria"... it was the rest of the pseudo-science babble surrounding the mitochondria discussions that I didn't understand.

Well the thing of it is, Square being a Japanese company and Japan lovin' them some PSPs (seriously, compare the sales there to the rest of the world) it's nothing the main consumer base would fuss about. So we have to deal, heh.

it's where I got stuck, too, the controls were simply SO clunky I couldn't get to the door on time, I'm not so bothered about PE3 going to a hand held but I wish/hope SE would give it a good ad campaign

Yeah, I'll live with it - hell, the Assassin's Creeds and GTAs and MGSs on PSP are servicable games, I'm sure PE3 will be as well. I do hope it gets some air time for sure, though - it'd be nice to see it resurrected as a franchise.

Oh, are you something of an MGS fan as well, Bishop? That's another of my favorite series. Convoluted and melodramatic as it gets, but damn if I don't choke up about it sometimes.

Oh, hell yeah - love MGS - and yeah, it's totally convoluted, melodramatic, and downright stupid at times - but God help me, I love it. It's one of those series that I won't even argue with people if they dislike it because I can totally see why - it just works perfectly for me.
