There have been rumors that the new management will completely ignore Kurtzman's era. I'd do the same if I were in their position. The Abrams/Kurtzman era has done more damage to the brand than good.

Star Trek is a commercial property. CBS/Paramount is making money on showing the Kurtzman shows, on selling blu rays, on licencing agreements for tie-in products. How much more of that money will come in if CBS/Paramount makes fandom's lunatic fringe happy by saying none of that stuff counts, forget about it?

There are plenty of ways to start afresh without wiping out any continuity. For example, set a new series in the 26th century on a ship exploring the Magellanic Clouds. New characters, new settings, new species. It's trivially easy to come up with concepts that don't require any references to any Kurtzman shows -- or any other Trek shows -- without overwriting them.

I mean, the lunatic fringe likes to go on about how much the people making Star Trek hate Star Trek and Star Trek fans. Seems to me that telling all of us, not just the haters, that over a decade of Star Trek doesn't count is what a CBS/Paramount that has contempt for Star Trek and its fans would do.

If they're smart, they won't link the movie to the rest of the franchise via publicity. They won't go down any rabbit holes about Prime or alternate universes. They'll say its Star Trek, and that it is going to be the best Star Trek movie possible.

Nick Locarno became Tom Paris because TPTB that didn't want to pay royalties to Ron Moore and Naren Shankar during VGR's run.

Unlikely. For one thing, the Abrams movies were specifically planned to introduce a new continuity. That's not the case with anything else.
